What is the purpose of rooting a nexus device?

From my understanding and what i've read on these forums the main reason for rooting an android phone would be to get back to the stock android experience.

So seeing as a Nexus 7 will have that, why are people talking about rooting it? what will this do for them?

Strictly out of curiosity, i have no intentions on doing this to mine.

Rooting is to do everything. Get away from and back to stock rooting. In this case, it will be used to use external storage devices. Rooting does a whole lot more than just get back to stock.

I've seen the term mean different degrees of hacking. Sometimes root means literally getting read write access to the root drive. Windows comes like that (or is easily adjusted) so having to "hack" my Kindle to get it, and not being able to get it on the GTV is strange to me.

Once you get root access you can do other things. Wipe the root drive and start over, add apps to the system folder, remove system apps etc..

So I guess the answer is you root it because it makes future changes possible, then you may never do anything else if you don't need to.

Then again I'm a newbie so what do I know.:-[

Flashing custom ROMs/kernels, tweaking/altering the system, changing out or removing system apps for customized or themed versions, other themeing considerations, over clocking, installing ad-blocking software or other stuff that requires root permission.. That's just off the top of my head.. :)

Just depending on the person. I root because I support the development community to the fullest. They work really hard to provide us with a good if not better experience. You have more options. May it be adding search key or shrinking the nav bar. There are ton of customization you can do. And honestly I don't see the point in owning a nexus device if you arent going to root. The devs work fast once they get the source. Its there work. We are the testers. They provide timely updates. You don't have to wait 2-3 months. You may wait a few weeks. Its just more bang for ur bucks if you root.

Well I'm an avid rooter and crackflasher, lol, but i wouldn't say you need to root to enjoy a nexus device. Specifically considering the Nex 7 I've recommended it to 2 friends of mine as well who I know will never unlock it and do the stuff I will with it, but just so they can enjoy a low cost, top quality tablet that will be updated straight from Google.

Of course if they let me I'll happily introduce them to the wonderful world of rooting and flashing ;)
