What S20 Ultra Camera App version fixes focus issues?

re: Camera Update

The camera is the same after update for me.
Still won't focus on up close (was not issue on my Note10+, Note9, or S8+ and still smudging parts of the image when manually picking a focal point (center right in first photo and left side in second). 20200322_172218.jpeg20200322_172023.jpeg

You are not alone, even after the camera update I can replicate the focus issue. But there are many who are happy and say it improved a lot for them.

Geez. First time it's 1 half of the barcode. After update it's other half. You can't win.

Hah, both photos are post update. But the behavior is exactly the same as pre-update; the update changed nothing.

I'll also add that was shot in my apartment so it's relatively low light. But I've taken hundreds of shots with previous phones in a similar environment with no issues. I believe there is definitely something wrong with this one be it hardware or software.

re: Camera Update

Is it the newer update after the March security patch update?
Yeah the March update came as soon as we got the phones. This is the new camera update, you can look at the camera version or the software build number which ends in ATCH which is the one that has the camera update.

Ok, you people trying to take macroshots do this.

1) Set main lens to 2x to 3x zoom, this is crucial to getting around the edge blurring.

2) Try to get as close as possible to the subject while still allowing the lens to focus.

3) Tap+hold screen to lock focus

4) Enjoy your normal macroshots that you're used to with old phones (actually my S20U takes better and more detailed macroshots than my S10 now with using the above method.)

re: Camera Update

Oh I forgot step 5) Thank Emig5m for being the early adopter before even the store release date to learn how to take macroshots on the S20 so you didn't. :D

re: Camera Update

Update finally arrived in the UK, unlocked Ultra on the O2 network. Vast improvement in the camera focusing, previously if i took photos on the timer from the main camera and then walked away from the phone to position myself (pose) it would never focus on me, it having chosen the focus point when setting up the shot and not registering the change in what it could see, i.e. me now posing. Post update it now recognises the change in subject and focuses perfectly.

Except these aren't macro shots, they're standard photos from 4"-6"+ in distance.

I'm a field technician in IT so I'm pretty much always required to capture serial numbers, MAC addresses, etc of any equipment I work on. Often times this involves reaching into the back of a network rack to get a photo of a device label and using voice command to snap the photo. And I don't need razor sharp images as I know it's not an ideal method, but it's sometimes taking five or six tries just to be able to make out all the lettering on the label. I've never had this sort of issue with several phones going back so I don't know what's wrong with this phone.

Thanks for the info but it doesn't really address the issue.

You're telling me those two of the SD card closeup aren't macro shots? Surely if that isn't good enough then no smartphone will be good enough. I offered a definite solution to the photo you provided having a problem with the blurring and the same shot would come out perfectly clear and detailed just like my two shots of the SD card. The thing wrong with the phone in close up shots I think is the lens size is larger. But it's possible to get just as good of close up shots as past phones using my method, here's a pic I just took of a common tape measure:

re: Camera Update

I dunno, for a smartphone I will consider this one a macroshot:

re: Camera Update

Just testing 108mp in this one...obviously downsized 40% for upload as the site wouldn't allow the full 108mp filesize... :p

re: Camera Update

That's incredible. Is this after update?

Nope. I'm always the last person on the planet to receive OTA updates....even when a close friend with the same phone/carrier gets a update I always seem to be about three days behind him getting updates. Those are just using my method above. You can zoom in 3x or more just don't activate the telephoto lens. :p I didn't even lock the focus in those last two, just set the zoom and got the optimal distance.

re: Camera Update

FWIW, both of my high end Sony cameras with Zeiss lenses require similar gyrations to focus closely or macro. Glad to see this helping with the Ultra, too!

re: Camera Update

Wow I believe some of these people will never be satisfied no matter what evidence is shown. Those closeups are very impressive! Nicely done.
