what was your first smartphone?

I suppose it depends what you call "smart" I owned various nokia phones and some Motarola phones before the Nokias, but I don't think the ability to play snake counts as smart! (Anybody who is too young to remember snake on a Nokia should look it up, very addictive).

My first real smart phone would likely be the ZTE Blade (aka Orange San Francisco):

It was a great phone (still have it at home actually). It is amazing how small it is in comparison to modern phones though (3.5").

The only thing tougher than those old Blackberry's were the old Nokia's. Nokia 3310s and 5110s were weaponized years ago.

Those things were tougher than anything! You could drop 'em, jostle them around, and they'd still last forever!

It was a great phone! Loved it.

Absolutely! You know it's a good phone when it's still used by others; even for reasons other than making calls and texts!

I remember the iPhone 5 being hugely popular and successful as well. I particularly liked the 5C because it came in different cool colours! 🤣

Galaxy S3, bought in November 2013. It's long-in-the-tooth now, but still holds a place in my heart as the phone that got me hooked on Android.

I did have an HTC Windows Mobile phone at one point in 2010, but I wouldn't even classify that as a "smart" phone. Hated that thing with a passion.

My first introduction to smartphones was a pocket PC Cingular 8125 MDA/PDA

It was a pretty cool device! Htc_Mda_Cingular_8125_Unlocked_World_Phone.jpeg

I had a navy blue Nokia 5160, which I didn't get until I was in college. It had an 84-by-48-pixel monochrome LCD, and the fact that the screen also had a backlight for reading it in the dark was a pretty big deal. It had both Tetris and Snake on it, which was the height of phone-based gaming at the time. I may have had it through T-Mobile (or was it AT&T?), but I remember that I got a sweet deal on it thanks to a AAA discount. It also lasted more than week on a single charge (only a couple hours of actual call time), but only charging it once a week was awesome.

I had that phone too! It was awesome! And I too remember that it held a sufficient charge for a long time!

First smartphone was a BlackBerry Pearl 8130. Prior to that I always used whatever the latest Motorola clamshell phone was along with either a Palm or Windows Mobile PDA.

Samsung Blade, if that can be considered smart, rather than feature. But Palm Pre (and 2 and 3) if we're talking truly smart. Only came over to Android when the Pre 3 was no longer a viable option.

The Pearl was an awesome phone! I never got a chance to use it, sadly.

I was a late adopter.

iPhone 5C was my first. It was a love-hate kind of thing. Android at the time was just too buggy for my tastes. iOS was pretty much my only reliable option, but it was awful from a UI standpoint. IIRC There was no pull down/up shade in those days, or at the very least the shade it may have had was filled with features that did not interest me.

So accessing anything required all kinds of deep-OS navigations.

Miniscule battery life sucked. I was always plugged into a back-up battery and lightning cable.

But this BY FAR was the most maddening thing about iOS... This would rear its fugly head after every iOS update and I would have to buy new lightning cables and accessories. Made me want to flush it down the toilet.

Gosh I really hate that with iOS as well.

I think my first was an LG phone wildfire I think. It was on 2.2

I hated that phone. It was slow and buggy and I ended up selling it. It put me off Android for years. In the end I tried ICS and Jellybean but for me Android was best on Nougat on a phone with 3 GB of RAM an Elephone P9000. The Pixel 2 has invigorated my use of Android and now on P I love using Android. I have abandoned iOS completely (except for occasionally using an iPad Mini. Although I have pretty much abandoned that now for a Chromebook)
