What was your previous phone? Do you like the Nexus 5 more or less? Why?

Re: What was your previous phone? Do you like the N5 more or less? Why?

Coming from a HTC Rezound and I love the Nexus 5 so much more.

I had the new S5 for a few weeks and came back to the Nexus 5. Nothing beats stock android. I think the Nexus 5 runs better and faster than the S5 because it doesn't have sense all over it and all the bloatware. Now the battery life is a different story...

i've just been progressing through all the nexus devices. upgraded from the nexus 4 to the nexus 5 a few months ago. it's almost been the perfect phone for me - the only problem is battery life.

i've just got a moto g as a back up device which is an amazing device for the money. camera is a bit meh, but the battery life is rock solid. i don't get the range anxiety that i get from the nexus 5.

Went from my N4 to N5, loved the n4 so much that i now feel bad for it just laying there. :P
The reason i bought N5 was because the glass back on the n4 broke, bought a "oem" "100% orginal" replacement, it shattered while i was browsing the internet. So thats the only reason i bought a new nexus. I love the rubbery feel, it sits so good in my hand. :)

Put my 5s on ebay and switched for the bigger screen. Had an S3 before that and I really like the screen size for my older eyes. Bought a sim from Ting and my two smartphone household, with small voice and data usage is less than $30 per month total for both phones.

I was perfectly happy with my Nexus 4. I was planning on keeping it until the next nexus phone came out but my wife dropped her nexus 4 and destroyed the screen. We didn't have $150 laying around to have it repaired so I went to T-Mobile and got a nexus 5 and JUMP and gave her my nexus 4. I'd of preferred to have bought it out right off google play but life doesn't wait until you are financially ready to happen. I am going to hold onto the broken N4 and have it repaired eventually so we have a back up phone for the next time something like this happens.

I like the nexus 5 quite a lot. It feels much better in the hand with the soft touch and rounded back. The difference between the screens is noticeable when I have them side-by-side but otherwise the size and resolution isn't that big of a difference which is great because I was worried that 5" was too large since I had gotten so used to 4.7 with the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus before it.

In the past 12 months, I've had an M7, Moto X, Note 3, G2, and now a Nexus 5. The only one I would hands down say I like the Nexus 5 better than is the Note 3. TouchWiz sucks. The others all had high points that they beat the Nexus on and weaknesses where they lose to the Nexus (with the possible exception of the G2, but we'll get to that).

The M7 had a camera that worked really well for me. I know it wasn't the best camera, but it was one of the best for how I personally use a phone camera, only being surpassed by the G2. The M7 also feels great in the hand, I love the metal construction. The M7 was nice because I unlocked the bootloader and was S-Off which enabled me to go back an forth between Sense and GPe (OTA's and everything in both setups). Front speakers are also a big plus IMO. However, the Nexus has a bigger screen in a smaller form factor and faster updates. The camera on the Nexus also seems to be pretty good so far. Overall, I do not think one is clearly better than the other, but I think I prefer the N5.

The Moto X Active Display, Touchless Control, and Moto Maker customization are all high points where the Nexus loses. It was also more one hand friendly than the Nexus. However, I like the extra screen realestate I get on the N5. Again there is the updates issue. The Moto X got 4.4 very quickly, but it took a very, very long time to get 4.4.2, and 4.4.2 addressed some bugs that were extremely inconvenient to live with. Then there is the camera. The Moto X's camera is garbage. It was simply too bad to live with. If the Moto X had a camera on par with the N5, I'd still use a Moto X. The camera on the X is so bad, that it completely erases any advantages it has over the N5 (or G2), and for that reason I prefer the N5 to the Moto X.

Now for the Note 3. Great hardware. Feels great in the hand, I love the big screen, and I love the S-Pen. The camera, while not on the same level as the G2, is very good. However, TouchWiz is terrible. It completely ruins the phone. If the Note 3 ran stock Android, Moto's build of Android, or LG's build of Android, I'd love it. However, it doesn't, and because of how terrible TouchWiz is, I prefer the Nexus 5.

Finally, my most recent pre-Nexus phone, the Nexus 5's sister device, the LG G2. What can I say about the G2? It is almost the same size as the Nexus 5, but you get .2" more screen. The camera kills the Nexus 5's camera, and just about any other phone camera out there. The battery life on the G2 is phenomenal. Once I installed Nova Prime (which I use on every phone), there was not one thing about the LG UI I had a problem with, and there were a few things I genuinely enjoyed. The back buttons and Knock On are amazing and I miss them badly. Q-Slide (their multi app setup) is fantastic. Sure, the G2 won't get updates as quickly as the Nexus 5, but that is about the only thing that I consider a legitimate advantage of the N5 over the G2. I gave my G2 to my mother-in-law cause I thought she'd like it better than a Nexus 5. I think the G2 is a great phone, and I like it better than I like my Nexus 5. Even knowing the G3 is coming out soon, the G2 is being sold at a price that I would not hesitate to buy it today. I got my wife one recently, got my mother-in-law one, and tried to get my brother-in-law to get one instead of an S5.

TL/DR: I've had a lot of phones this year. The N5 is as good as or better than all of them except the G2. The G2 rocks.

It's interesting that you mention the G2 because LG makes both the Nexus 5 and the G2. Sometimes I wonder if LG held back on some features of the Nexus 5 so that it could put the G2 on a slightly higher footing to get better sales.

Re: What was your previous phone? Do you like the N5 more or less? Why?

I came from a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The reasons why i upgraded to the nexus 5 is becuase i cracked my Galaxy Nexus screen about 2 months before the nexus 5 came out and thought i might as well wait for it rather than getting a nexus 4 (which i didnt like because of the glass back). I would have got the nexus 5 even if my hadnt cracked because of google dropping support and updates for it aswell.

Maybe. I think it would be part Google saying they did not want certain features or LG keeping them exclusive (rear buttons), part cost savings to hit their price point (smaller screen, smaller battery), and part Google not wanting to build special apps (IR Blaster).

I also think that it really shows how great LG is as a phone manufacturer. I've used flagship devices from all the big four this year (HTC, LG, Samsung, and Motorola) and the two LGs are definitely the best.

I wonder if it would make sense for LG to put a Google Play edition G2 in the Play store as a companion to the Nexus 5. Both devices are similar, so I don't think there would be much effort to put stock Android on a G2.

I do not think it would make sense. The Nexus 5 is close enough to a GPe G2 that it wouldn't make sense to have a separate device. So much of what makes the G2 great is software. You'd lose Knock On, Q-Slide, their remote app (which is excellent and got me to stop using my Harmony), and their camera software. I do think a GPe G2 would be better than a Nexus 5, you'd still have the bigger screen & battery, the rear buttons, and the better camera module, but I do not think it would be enough better to justify both devices existing.

I liked you post. I was looking for a phone for months and read all that I could. I didn't want to make a hasty decision. When I was deciding the G2 was still north of $600 and the N5 was $350. I loved the G2 and today it is a steal at just a little over $400. If a person doesnt give the G2 a serious look today ..... they haven't done their homework. There seems to be a hidden feature that is hard to explain about the N5 that cannot be fully explained. Best I can explain is "the sum is greater than it's parts"! Only a Nexus owner understands. I cannot put this phone down! For $350 ...... I felt Like I stole it! Its a tough argument to oppose!

N5 is the best affordable phone I got. I was surprised by the beast performance of this phone.

Well.... I think it was a price point. After all, LG had the basic framework sitting right there in the development pipeline when Google came a callin' for the Nexus 5... Google simply gave them a list of requirements and what they wanted it to look like and its dimensions and asked LG if they could build that phone for them at a particular price. LG then took them, looked at what they had, made some edits (13MP to 8MP, 3000mah to 2300mah, etc...) and showed it to Google... and it pleased them....

And yes... LG can certainly make themselves a killer phone.... which is why I am very interested in how well the upcoming G3 works, and why I was happy to hear that LG might be the first to jump on the Android Silver bandwagon. We would all benefit from a continued relationship between the two companies.

My first smartphones was the Bold Blackberry series, three of them. Then I jump to Android devices; HTC ONE X, HTC ONE X+, HTC ONE ( M7), LG G2. Now my phone since May 16, 2014 is Google Nexus 5.

I came from the Note 2 on Verizon.
I found myself buying a new phone every 6 months and getting upset I couldn't have everything because I was on Verizon. I also get a 25% discount from my work on AT&T service. So I waited for the right time to drop VZW and hop on AT&T off contract. I coveted nexus phones for ever and finally had a real one (GNex was alright I guess).

I love the stock experience. It feels clean and smooth. I like the way the Nexus 5 fits in my hand well and the entire user experience seems easy. Not having a contract is great!

My last phone was a Moto X on Verizon. I got fed up with vzw and made the switch to T-Mobile and decided to go with the N5. Only thing I wish that it had from the X is the always listening and drive/sleep mode.
