What would it take for you to NOT upgrade to the pixel 2?

No money or CCs. I got the S8, thought that would do it, but Oct/Nov is a long way out. I've seen this movie before.

I most definitely want a more consistently credible source to verify this claim before I put any energy into it myself, but it sure makes for timely clickbait, if nothing else!
Yeah, they have no source for their claim. I believe they said, "unnamed industry insiders".... which is a nonsense term. So far every person who ought to know is indicating that both the Note 8 and new Pixel devices have the SD 835 in them. Test devices are already out for both devices... so it'd be pretty strange to see them switch hardware this late in the game, especially for the Note 8. The Pixel does have a little longer before shipping. But so far nothing from Qualcomm has ever indicated that they were even planning or working on an 836. All their upcoming work seems to be finishing the 845 for this upcoming spring.

If they're charging $850-900 for the XL 2, with a single camera, no headphone jack, no microSD, only 4GB of RAM, then why buy it? Why would you absolutely must need it? Just new and slim design? G6 and S8 been out. Don't say pure Android is super fast, LG has one of the fastest OS I've used. At that price, you're better off with a Note 8 with dual camera, S Pen, micro SD, headphone jack, and more. Samsung isn't that slow or laggy anymore.

Reason why I skipped the Pixel, or any previous Google phones. 32GB is enough for the basic user, however advanced users like me have tons of media (ebooks, audio books, podcasts, MP3s, etc.). Cloud server? Really, so I have to spend more money on data plan? I just want my own physical storage space, not some invisible storage I can only access on wifi. Google is turning into Apple and real Android fans are shying away from them.
32GB is NOT enough for an average basic user!
We are talking about a device going into 2018!
For the Pixel XL 2 (LG) model reasonable memory (64GB UFS v2.1 with MicroSDXC) and since there is NO MicroSDXC UHS I support on Pixel 2 XL reasonable memory on a premium Phone (as Google already said!) would be "128GB UFS v2.1"
On the small 5" Pixel 2 (HTC) model "Yes" less specs! 4GB RAM, 64GB UFS v2.1,.....basically less everything specs wise then Pixel 2 XL (LG) model.
What tests?? The one that says Pixel 2 XXL (HTC) is using Android 7.1,
Snapdragon 835, 4GB RAM, 5.6" display, slower than Samsung Galaxy S8.....is that the test you're talking about?? Are you forgetting that Pixel 2 XL is coming out Q4 2017, all premium Phones in Q4 2017 except iPhone 8 will have 6GB RAM, and YES an upgraded Snapdragon 836 (MSM 8998 Pro)

It's coming if you like it or not! Samsung is helping Qualcomm with the Snapdragon 836 to compete better against Apple A11 processeor this fall!
Just like last year with the Snapdragon 821 to compete better against the Apple A10 processeor.
As for the Snapdragon 845 witch by the way not made by Samsung anymore as they lost the contract. Qualcomm Uses TSMC’s 7nm technology to make next generation Snapdragon 845! Witch is why the first Phone this time is LG G8.

Also not using Qualcomm custom Kryo CPU in the Snapdragon 845 instead there using the ARM reference Cortex A75 & A55 big.LITTLE combination like the Snapdragon 810 did. The only thing that's custom in S845 is GPU Adreno 630 & X50 5G Modem.

I'm not sure why you're so against the Snapdragon 836? Google is you're friend my man.
Test devices. Not tests, sorry if that was unclear. Several groups of device testers now have new Pixels. I'm not against the 836, my entire point is that so far there's no evidence for it's existentce. I hope it does exist.

This thread is the first time I've heard of any 836 rumours in upcoming devices.
Still puzzles me why people thirst for a new chip and talk about the current chip like its too old to buy every time a new one is announced.
Due to how expensive I'm expecting the Pixel XL 2 to be, it needs to not have any major show stoppers.
I can live without a headphone jack (I don't like it but 90% of the time it won't affect how I personally use my phone)
If there is no headphone jack there had better be water resistance (ip68 or higher)
Battery life AND size have to be above average. I don't buy efficiency being able to make up for a small battery. That is true when a phone first comes out. But then later you hear about serious battery degradation issues with later updates or simply as the phone ages. I want to start with BOTH power efficiency AND a big battery (3450mAh+) in the hopes that a year from purchase I could still get 5hr SOT from my phone.
If the new LG OLED screens were significantly worse than the current displays that would give me pause.
Obviously build quality, camera etc are also important, but I am confident Google can handle the basics. So far the Pixel XL 2 is still my top choice. If Google messes up, I'll get a OP5 or perhaps a discounted Mate 9 and wait for Pixel 3.

For my HTC 10 to continue to keep amazing me is all I need to skip the pixels2. Something happened to it, then it'd most likely be the smaller pixel for me. Really burnt out on phablet phones
I'm using one of these on my work van which doesn't have Bluetooth, works great but you need to keep it charged.

I don't like the stripped down stock Android experience, prefer that Samsung and LG actually load their phones with features. So knowing it will be a bare bones android experience playing catch up to Samsung is enough for me to avoid it.
Rumored lack of a headphone jack would ruin it for me as well. Pixel is a good phone, I just don't like needing a 3rd party camera and many other apps that don't come pre-installed.

Camera app? It comes with a camera app. And last year's Pixel camera is still better than everything Samsung and LG have released since. What other apps are missing?
It's definitely seeming like it'll be my next phone. The lack of the headphone jack isn't a dealbreaker for me (though I honestly wouldn't complain about more features).
To be honest though, I hope that there'll be wireless charging someway somehow. I never used it on my Nexus 6, but it's looking like it'll be preferable.

There is no reason for it to be any more expensive than it already is except as a cash grab by Google.
