Whats Revolutionary About iPhone 5?

Look in the "Ridiculous verdict in the Apple vs Samsung case" thread I got into it with you and JHBThree and ever since we've been at odds across the whole forum. Can we just agree to let bygones be bygones and move on? I didn't join this Site to fight with other members.

(1) You can completely replace the operating system and various components with ease. Jailbreaking = the most difficult and tedious thing I've ever seen, and I don't consider myself to be technologically incompetent :p.

You do realize Jailbreaking is a one click process. Don't you?

(2) Stock, you can do a bit more and customize it plenty with the use of widgets, launchers, toggles, etc. That type of customization is only available while being jailbroken, but again, see #1 for my thoughts on that.

I'll give you that. These features, however, are not improtant, nor wanted by everyone.

(3) Sort of like #1, the ability to replace and customize various file system pieces and phone system images is incredibly powerful if you (a) know what you're doing, and (b) adequate development/support is available. For example, changing the kernel adds so much more "power" and "flexibility" that kernel replacement alone makes Android a more powerful and adaptable base system--IMO.

See my answer to #2.

(4) Aside from "hacking," you have, generally, 4 major Android "flavors." You have stock (Nexus), TouchWiz (Samsung, HTC (Sense), and Motorola (Motoblur). While some point to this as a weakness, many consumers appreciate being able to have the same "ecosystem" while having the ability to choose hardware/software that best reflects their needs, desires, etc.

There's plenty more, but those are the big 4.

Which everyone & their mother complains about. You mention plenty more. Such as?

Where is your evidence to back this up both sides here seem to be extremely biased with no real evidence backing either sides claim this argument is getting you guys nowhere clearly and is nothing but a baseless trollfest you iPhone lovers realize your on an android forum right? You want your bragging rights put up your numbers. Android guys you wanna prove them wrong show em something. Jesus Christ y'all sound like 5 year olds.

The process itself is one-click; I've done it on my iPad, my friend's iPhone 4, and a friend's iPad 2. Doing anything with jailbreak, however, requires sorting through the tangled-mess that is Cydia, understanding what is applicable to your given iDevice, understanding how the "modifications" function and how to customize them, and general stuff such as the inane Winterboard process to theming. For something as simple as iOS, customizing it is an obnoxious and anxiety-riddled exercise.

I'll give you that. These features, however, are not improtant, nor wanted by everyone.

That's entirely subjective. To say they're not important presumes that the user is aware of the feature and actually chooses not to use it or desire it. This is, like anything, an economic choice and is thus dependent upon the actor's wants, desires, utility, and indifference. Further, I would argue that the popularity of Android is direct evidence to the contrary, but I digress.

See my answer to #2.

See above.

Which everyone & their mother complains about. You mention plenty more. Such as?

Most of these are related to the above, but with more specific detail, uses, and examples:

  1. Changing radios. You can use a variety of different setups, from prior images, current images, hybrid images, or even developed images.
  2. The ability to completely remap hardware keys and capacitative keys with a wide variety of development supporting the application of such ability.
  3. The configuration or reconfiguration of softkeys (changing the icon, use, secondary and primary commands, adding soft keys, deleting softkeys, having "swipable" commands from the softkeys, like a widget launcher ala AOKP).
  4. Having the choice of entirely different and radical homescreen setups (e.g. Chameleon launcher, MIUI, etc.).
  5. Having the ability to use radically different keyboard types (Swype, Slide It, etc.)
  6. The general ability to develop applications and software based upon a single binary/"exploit" ("root") that enables new and different uses for equipment (OTG cable/storage for Nexus 7 being an example of this).
  7. A development community that doesn't just develop surface modifications (unlike a decent portion of Cydia, which for some exists solely for changing lock screen and theming [qualifier: at least for the first iPad and as of 3 months ago when I decided to drop into that rabbit hole of sorrow and chaos), but rather deep, intense, and innovative stuff that you simply cannot do on other operating systems (Paranoid Android is a prime example of this; it has the ability to set different "modes" across a variety of levels, from your basic workspace to system apps to individual apps--THAT is innovation).
  8. The ability to offer a variety of modules and modifications that work with the kernel to alter the user experience. Examples of this include but are not limited to software such as PGM Nexus, torch add-ons, fast-charging, etc.
  9. Depending on kernel, you can completely reconfigure colors at a very deep, nuanced, and intricate level; you can completely reconfigure haptic feedback and vibration strength, pulses, etc.; you can add hot plug support which may add in extending battery life by reading a variety of inputs and shutting down a core(s) depending on the output/inputs listed or created; the ease and ability to overclock, underclock the CPU or GPU; the ease and ability to overvolt, undervolt, and configure the power structures and systems in order to gain performance or battery gains; the ability to add or configure WiFi drivers to better serve and configure your WiFi connection; etc.
  10. The ability to install and configure an OS not intended (through the natural upgrade lifecycle) for your device onto your device (although, I admit, this has varying effects depending on device).
  11. The ability to have full control over the development and implementation of the OS at the basic source level (see my compiling guide for more information), allowing the end user to ultimately build and run their own software while having the ability for them to develop it on their own with the use of established AOSP-practices, guides, java, and so on and so forth.
  12. The ability to take features from other "distributions" of Android (ala S-Voice, TW launcher, etc.) and have them workable and usable on another "distribution" of Android (i.e. putting said TW launcher or S Voice on my Galaxy Nexus); the mix and match ability of Android is one of the most powerful abilities of mobile software currently.
  13. Complete ability to reconfigure and adapt camera technology for a use that was unforeseen or unavailable when the device was released (a poor example, but an example nonetheless: the ability to use the Nexus 7's camera as a standalone camera and not just for video).

TL;DR - Android is a ball of clay. It is extremely powerful, adaptable, and flexible. All it takes is development and community. Fortunately, we have that in spades. Apple does not and will not, for that's not their purpose or use. As such, naturally, they have a less powerful and adaptable OS because those uses are not wanted. You make the choice, ultimately, but it is what it is. Walled v. Open Garden. Some like to grow their own peppers, some like to grow the town's choice. Your call.

*Yawn* As I've already linked.

My responses are in bold.

Yet it seems you can't think of a revolutionary iPhone feature. Or say why those features aren't revolutionary.

I've never claimed the iphone was revolutionary. Ever.

The features you mention aren't revolutionary because they've all been done before in different places. (hey, like the first iphone)

You must feel like a big boy behind that keyboard son all you and 9/10 of this thread is trolling non stop give up go complain or gloat somewhere else its annoying to see fanboyism on this level both OS's run who cares does your little e pee pee feel better acting like your so smart on here. If the i5 has those numbers so be it but that's no reason to continue your elitist crusade here my guess real world your about worthless to anybody but yourself so to feel bigger you act like a clown getting peoples goats so why not just tell us how you really feel

Look, I'm not trying to be a jerk here, it's just that trolls like Lodingi can't seem to stop with the spouting of hate against Android. Can't they just stay on iMore and be at peace with us Android fans?

Some would argue the majority of Android users are using commodity devices. More about $$$, and less about platform.

Lol. That's a feature. Hardly revolutionary.

I guess the paper spec is all that matters to you. Don't let your emotions get the best of you.

Why can't the die hard Android fan just say the other platforms are not for them, and leave it at that? Why must they attack the other platforms with factless bantor?

"Why can't the die hard Android fan just say the other platforms are not for them, and leave it at that?"

That is a very wise position. Now, apply that thought to yourself and lead by example.

Hopefully you will and we will not hear from you again on these Android forums.

Yeah I'm most likely older than you. But you're right. This is quite fun. I do notice the diehard Android fanboys often resort to personal attacks. So who's got the little pee pee?

Because I own several Android phones & thoroughly enjoy them.

@dmmark. Nice post. I happen to agree with almost all you wrote. Thank you for that.

If I remember correctly you struck first I said both sides need more factual data and you attacked me with your reply maybe you need an attitude adjustment

Then I suggest you re-read your post. I provided the link to the "factual" data twice. Not my fault you're too lazy to read it.

Lodingi, you're being very hypocritical. But I'm tired of this. Why can't you just leave and let everyone be peaceful? Please stop trolling.

The only thing I like about iphone is they kept building their flagship device in a small size. Even tho 3.5in is too small, 4in is perfect and the hardware is perfect. Software wise, I'm an android fan. If only a nexus device can follow the same hardware style like the iphone.... That will be my happy place!

Apple - overpriced and over hyped. I guess I'm not hip enough to be price gouged.

Unfortunately, Apple likes to sue companies that make phones of a similar form to the iPhone. One phone that's really good, has a similar form to the iPhone, and has a 4.3 inch screen which shouldn't be too large for you is the Asus Padfone. Here's the website: ASUS - Mobile- ASUS PadFonehttp://www.asus.com/Mobile/PadFone/

Actually, they cost the same as high-end Android phone. Which in my opinion and according to many tests are much better than the iPhone. Just saying. Your opinion is your opinion. I don't want to start a fight.

Jail breaking isn't a one click process with iOS 6. That exploit was fixed. In fact, unless it's tethered to your PC 24/7 you can't jailbreak it at all.

Not to mention cydia is the most frustrating thing ever and anyone who's used it knows that.

There's nothing at all revolutionary about the iPhone 5. It's basically an iPhone 4s that's 20% thinner with an extra row of icons and crappy mapping software.
