What's the one thing that Moto could add to make you buy a Moto X2?

Yeap, definitely camera. Better (larger, with better light sensitivity) sensor from different supplier (preferably Sony), preferably with OIS, with better camera software with more user-accessible adjustments (like on Nokia models and on new HTC One) and better optics. If it will make phone slightly thicker - that's not an issue. Other improvements will also be welcomed but this is the one single area where current Moto X (as well as majority of other smartphones) is severely lacking.

1. Better camera.
2. Wireless charging.
3. A bit more PPI.
4. 5" screen (as a separate model to satisfy both camps).

If at least 2 (the first 2) are not met, I will move on to Nexus 5 or 6.
similar phones in different sizes would be an obvious next step. But I hope if they go that route they don't dumb-down the small one, like Samsung does.

#1: Better Camera
- Larger sensor, larger pixels or possibly very high pixel count such as the Lumia 1020 with oversampling
- Instant on camera with very fast image capture and shot to shot time
- Interest in dual (or multi-lense) camera, as long as primary camera is even better then current camera and additional lenses can do more then just add depth information (as in HTC), such as increasing image quality, adjust for multiple lighting environments, etc... and multiple cameras don't slow image acquisition

#2: Larger Battery
- Moto knows how to do this very well (MAXX)

#3: Better Processor
- I'm going to own this for 2 years, I don't want a 2 year old CPU
- Given the launch window the Snapdragon 805 would be great. I understand what they did with the first generation, however, with a flagship price, I expect flagship specs

#4: Durability
- Water/Dust Resistance or Proof
- More resistant to shattering and scratching

#5: Screen
- Brightness, Visibility in sunlight, and Color Accuracy
- Maybe slight increase in size, without increasing phone footprint (screen should not be bigger then 5")
- Unsure about resolution (720 vs 1080). Definitely no need to increase above 1080

None of these things is in line with Moto's hardware strategy...
#1 More pixels doesn't mean better pictures, but I agree that the camera needs to be improved.
#2 If you want a larger battery, get the Maxx. The Moto X fit very well in the hands, so they can only add so much thickness to the phone without affecting ergonomics, and they need to keep the curved back
#3 This goes against everything they were trying to do with their Droid line and Moto X. They proved that you can have stunning performance without 4 cores clocked over 2GHz. They used the S4 pro for their X8 chip, but the phone still outperformed basically every other flagship at the time.
# 4 That will make the phone larger and thicker, so I'll pass.
#5 I hope they keep the ~4.7 inch screen. Larger is better for media consuming, but that's what I have a tablet for. I can reach all corners on the Moto X, but not on my S4.

Regarding:

#1, first thing I said is a larger sensor and larger pixels, both of which should increase camera quality. As long as the sensor size gets bigger and the pixels don't get smaller, then increasing the number of pixels will increase the quality of the images.

#2 Maxx is very thin, but overall form factor is to big. Doesn't have to have a battery as big as the Maxx, but a bigger battery could be nice

#3 I know that's not what they tried to do, but they intro the X at a price comparable to all the other top tier phones. The Nexus 5 showed that they can get a SD 800 in at a very affordable price. The OPO is supposed to have and 801 and be less then $400. Either make the phone <$300 OFF CONTRACT, or put a great processor in it (805)

#4 water/dust resistance rating may be more achievable without increasing the size. I agree that I would rate form factor over something like an IP67 rating

#5 As indicated, not exactly sure about the screen. Maybe it should stay at 4.7", maybe 4.8, 4.9 or 5.0", but not larger then 5". Just as with 720 vs 1080. Not sure there is a benefit and 720 should be a battery saver.

Brightness, daylight visibility, and touch sensitivity/responsiveness are more important.

Agreed on all points except PPI. I came from GS4 and I still miss the clarity of fine font.
Definitely no need to chase the specs. This phone is smoother than top line GS4.
I've already dropped it a couple of times in hard wood floor and I don't even know what side it fell on because it's still flawless.

I'd also like a slightly bigger screen but I think they must have at least 2 sizes to satisfy both camps.

Regarding screen size, there is no way they are going to do a 4.7 & 5" screen. Personally, I don't want anything bigger then 5".

With regards to Moto's hardware strategy, they now have the Moto G for low end, could have the moto x for mid range and moto x2 for high end.

I don't want them to chase numbers, but optimize performance. With the performance they squeezed out of the s4 there is no reason they can't make it fly with a 805. If they did go that route it should probably be underclocked to save batter.

That makes no sense though. It's the same line of products, so it wouldn't be a separate category...

Of course it makes sense, just like Apple sells older iPhones. Last years high end device is this years mid or low tier device.

Why? Every single major company that actually has some success in Android business offers at least 2 different sizes. And it makes perfect sense since not everyone's the same. Also, Lenovo wants to dominate China. In China and Asia in general most people prefer bigger phones. So if they make one for China, why not sell it here as well

Because there is to little difference between a 4.7 & 5" screen. You could do a line at 4, 5, &6".

This. I was deciding between a Moto X and an HTC One. I picked the X because the one was bigger and harder to use one-handed. The biggest thing I'm missing from the HTC is the front speakers. But I love my Moto X. I haven't played with the new One, but apart from that, if I had to get a new phone today it would still be the X.
I'm actually very worried they decide to go with a bigger screen for the X2. All I would want would be a better camera, update the processors accordingly (don't need the fastest again, but a refresh of X8), and maybe some new software stuff.
I don't need a 1080 screen. Personally, it's pretty hard to tell the difference and I would rather have the additional battery life.

Not a very fair comparison. The X2 and HTC One M7 both have the same size screen, but the M7 (and M8) have large bezels and the speakers, both of which make the phone much bigger. As long as the bezels stay small, or get smaller, the phone could sport a slightly larger screen and still be a reasonable size. I have a Razr Maxx HD and am fine with the size. It could easily sport a 5" screen on a phone the same size, maybe smaller.

X2? You mean X?
Yea, I know the screen size on the M7 and X are the same, but it wasn't really the additional length from the speakers that bothered me. The side bezel on the HTC were larger. I'm not sure if that was the only reason, but it was more difficult to reach the far side of the screen one handed on the HTC

An iterative upgrade with a superior camera and I'm sold. Not asking for bleeding edge specs, but a continued focus on optimizing proven and updated internals would be perfect. A 1080p screen would be fine as long as they adjusted battery size to accommodate the added drain.

Better camera, better battery, orange back. 720p is perfectly fine in a phone (but unacceptable in a tablet) and I want the screen size to stay exactly the same. That's about all that Motorola can do, the rest of my problems come from Google. For example, make Google Now/Google Voice Search useful. Touchless Control would be great on a device with a personal assistant, but Android doesn't have that. Besides that, Moto X is fine.
