what's this thing look like now?

He said that it didn't look like 4.5 but he wasn't sure. So until we have some official confirmation, it could be either size. Why couldn't those leaked pics of the Bionic be next to a Droid X so we could tell?!

Your right. I found that after I went back and read it.

Also this quote in that thread. To me this is probably where the idea of 4.5" came from:

"It is 4.3". The reason why people thought it was 4.5" is because it was next to a Defy and it was originally said that it was next to Atrix which is 4". So the reason why it looked so large in the photos is because it was next to a Defy which is 3.7"

Otherwise I guess none of us know for sure.

You already know what I am going to ask, but I will ask it anyway. What is your source?

Agree once people realized it was the defy the notion of a 4.5 inch screen kind of went out the window. I just wish they would release some final specs since we only have bits and pieces.

I'm not a source. But I took the picture of the 'bionic' lined up against the Defy. I estimated that bionic is approximately 1" taller. (Defy dimensions are 4.21 x 2.32 x 0.53) So if the height of the bionic is 5.21 that's a 23% increase. Applying 23% to all dimensions you have 5.21 x 2.82 x .65. 5.21 x 2.82 houses a 4.5" screen quite accurately to the screen we see in the photo that compares the device to the defy.

I hope the 23% is not applied to the depth. .65 would be a ginormous phone.. Also I think the FCC released a scale of the device. If the numbers hold true to my own, you can bet there is a 4.5" screen.
Well if you take 23% of 3.7 it is .851. Add that to 3.7 and you get 4.551. Just saying...

Your 23% is based on dimension of the entire phone and not just the screen itself. Do you think every phone with a 3.7" screen has a dimension of 4.21 x 2.32 x 0.53 ??? You must measure only the screen of the defy and then measure the screen of the bionic to have any real calculation. Also the phones are somewhat rotated in the picture which will make measurements a little off.

I wasn't saying that my measurements are exact. I was just making guesstimates.

I can understand that. It's just trying to determine a difference of 0.2 inches need a much more precise measurement procedure.

I hope we get a release date for the SGII soon as well. Based on everything rumored to be coming out soon, those are the only two Android devices that I am considering.

Don't get your hopes up for that happening. With samsung in the lawsuit with apple I wouldnt expect it until end of sept at the earliest if even by then.

I once had my eye on GSII also but there was no information whether it would have LTE or not. I don't see it coming anytime soon either. If the bionic is what I think it is spec wise then I will grab it up and not look back.

I have the TB and really *until I got the extended battery* had been bitter-sweet. The Bionic was always what I wanted and still think I will do it. The trade-in is good with my employer discount so I just may do that to off-set the cost.

Not to mention their legal battle with Microsoft to boot. Sammy is getting pummeled in the states. Apple, and MS are worried about the GSII.

That said, I too am debating between the DB and the GSII. My upgrade became available today. I doubt I'll be able to hold out for the Sammy. I just don't want to give up CM7 on my DX for a Moto that runs Blur. They need to hurry and get 2ndinit working the DB. (When it's released that is...)

On that note is .2 inches really that significant? A 4.6% increase from 4.3 inches? I would say, as long as it doesn't increase the size of the outer dimensions of the phone. I'd happily welcome a 4.5 inch screen. but I can't say for sure that a 4.6% change to the screen size would have a dramatic effect on the phone and it's form factor.

My sentiments exactly Workodactyl. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the 4.3 vs. 4.5 screen talk recently (and Asterdroid's assessment that it's actually an 8+ inch screen!). But some are actually saying that a difference of 0.2 inches (or 5mm or the size of the following ---- ) will be a deal breaker. Wow, some people are really picky ;). Granted a larger screen with the same resolution as a smaller screen isn't good, and I too love the SAMOLED screens, but I don't care if it's 4.3 or 4.5, I'll still want the Bionic...unless the official specs come out and make me think otherwise of course!

I would check your math unless I cant think strait this morning.

I think your 4.6% change is based upon the diagonal measurement only. Since the screen is in 2 dimensions wouldn't the size difference be something like 4.6%^2 or a change in size of about a 21% increase?

That seems significant to me...

Some of us would actually prefer an LTE Superphone with a 4? screen. Thus the talk of 4.5? is going in the wrong direction for us.

Further, a couple of quick calcs suggest that upping the screen from 4.3 to 4.5 would actually increase the frontal area of the phone by 1 square inch. An extra square inch of phone in your pants pocket can be noticed.

You're thought is correct -- the increase is in the diagonal. However, the math is wrong. I can't say for sure what the exact measurements will be as it'll depend on the aspect ratio of the display. However, the change in the length and width of the phone to accommodate an increase in 0.2-in along the diagonal would be less than 0.2-in. Going with a 16:9 aspect ratio, the length increases by 0.17-in and width increases by 0.1-in. So, not a big difference at all. But, that's just the screen size.

To me it's all in how they fit it in. For instance, the Fascinate has a 4-in screen and the Thunderbolt has a 4.3-in screen. But, their physical dimensions are almost identical. If you're ever in a Verizon store where you can compare them side-by-side, it's quite interesting. While 4.5 wouldn't be a deal breaker for per se, it could if Moto decides to go with a much larger housing.
