Whatsapp wrong profile pic

Good evening:I have inquires regarding of a whatsapp account that is still active, the thing is that my uncle traveled to Bolivia, unfortunately he passed away on December 17th and his stuff remained there, we have had issues trying to recover his belongings. I'm from Mexico and it recently happened that I noticed in his profile picture there is an image of someone else , and the online status was active last Friday 02/02/18 4:35 , we inquired the person that holds his cellphone there, but he confirms he hasn't made any type of changes. We had a livestream conversation and he even showed us that in the profile pic it still remains as the picture of my uncle as it was. We updated the app but the problem is still there. same picture from someone else and same active time. I would like to know what could be happening. Please let me know if this has to do with the fact the cellphone is in another country.Thank you for your assistance.

there are many possibilities. you said that you spoke to the person holding the phone, and he showed you that the picture is still the same. is it possible that the phone had no data? I'm asking because it's possible that someone else used the number to open their own account, but being that the original phone doesn't have internet, it didn't register that changes were made.
