Does anyone know when the upgrade/ release for the USB and the SD card slot will be usable?
Anyone know of a root alternative?
I have had my Xoom since launch day and I'm getting tired of waiting for these features to become available its June now.
Thanks,

USB port works just fine.

For the microSD and 4G, word is Q2 2011. Meaning by the end of June. Haven't heard anything lately, but that's what was said when the Xoom first came out.

I think he means reading USB thumb drives through the USB port. Like it can with root while stock 3.1 cannot.

I rooted my Xoom and still can't see a thumb drive, and when I plug in my camera, my gallery opens up, but it never asks me to import. Using the Motorola cable for the USB connection. Debug is on. Anything else I'm supposed to do?

It's supposed to be able to now with USB host support (and the $25 cable from Moto) with the 3.1 upgrade. I haven't had the chance to search to find the cable cheaper yet.

As for the OP's question yes Q2 which ends the end of July so we have some time yet before it is done. Google is working on writing this into Honeycomb natively (Samsung, et al a are using their own workarounds to make it work).

Where are you looking for the flash drive? It's under mnt/usbOTG. What kernel are you running? Other than that, it may just be that some drives work and others don't.

I don't think HC has support for flash drives, only peripherals like game controllers and cameras.
Also, June. End of this month.

The USB host support is much more limited than many of us were hoping. Stock 3.1 cannot read thumb drives via micro USB even with appropriate cable. As the poster above said. Even the documentation is specific to what it can read, and the cable is a camera connectivity kit - gearing it towards that and not external thumb drives and external hard drives.

They also have them on eBay for under $10, and they work great! (at least the one I got does). Just make sure it is a HOST cable (OTG). I think the one I got was around $7.

...or there's that. I'm more of an "instant gratification" guy (Veruca Salt syndrome, according to my wife) and I like the comfort of being able to resolve issues in-person. The $20 won't make me or break me but if cost is a concern, eBay is an option. Besides, it pained me to put more money in Motorola's pocket while they leave me hanging for my "already paid for" 4G/microSD functionality. At least when I return the Xoom for the broken promises, <sniffles> I'll be able to return them both to the same place.

I finally got my Xoom to see my camera by changing the setting on my camera from USB to PTB. Thanks to whoever gave that tip, I'd never have known.

On a separate issue, today it happened, my charger broke. My Xoom was sitting on my bed charging, slipped off onto the floor, and the connector bent and broke, wouldn't charge anymore. I went to Best Buy and at first, they couldn't even figure out how to order me another one, they looked 3 different places and they were unable to get me one. They and I were baffled, because I can't be the first one to have broken this little thing. They ended up opening a brand new Xoom and giving me the charger from that one. Kudo's to the Best Buy guys for finding (and allowing) the simplest solution to my problem.
