which insurance did you guys go with?

I went with the insurance through Verizon because of the lost/stolen aspects and the time to replace-- I love Squaretrade but am not sure about the length of time I'd be without a phone in their plan.

Many folks will probably still have their old phone around just in case.
I have about 10 old blackberry 8330 and 8530 that will get me by in a pinch.

Thats all insurance to me. Its like Chris Rock said I understand I am paying you in case some crap happens. Now when no crap happens..... shouldn't I get some money back!? Lol. But when crap does happen you are covered.

But thats not a bad plan. Keep it until you see the cost of it new on ebay etc go down to a point where its ok to get rid of it. If you pay the monthly option that is.

haha agreed. i just dont like the idea that they say they are covering you for $600 but they send refurbished items. Refurbished absolutely does not mean the same thing as new and therefore is definitely not the same $600 price tag.

You are nuts.

Added it to to homeowners insurance, $27 per year, no deductible, all faults covered, insured for $1000 cash money to cover all apps, and the phone.

Plus, if it breaks/gets stolen in a year, I won't be stuck with having to get old tech, or a refurb phone. I will be able to buy a new phone of whatever new phone is out.

I had my dad call our homeowners insurance, am fam, and it would be $15/yr per phone. But there is a catch. If one out of the 5 of us on the plan breaks their phone and uses the insurance to get a new one, my dad loses the $200/yr no claims discount and there is no way of getting it back.

I go with the Assurion plan. If you go with the VZ package and you ever need to file a claim you get a refurbished phone/item. With Assurion they buy you a new phone minus the fee. Much better deal and cheaper, believe me I've been there already. My wife lost her phone and I learned quick.

Hey knock on wood. If that works for you go for it. But I would not recommend that. Most people are not as fortunate as you I guess. Lol
Insurance is a ripoff for most people. It's designed to make the company rich not help the consumer out.
For some time now whenever offered insurance or an extended warranty or anything like it on a purchase I find out the price then set aside that amount in a savings account. If something breaks I will pull from that account to repair or replace it. Every once in awhile I dip into it to make a purchase.
I've only once had to dip into it once to replace an item and that's when I jumped in a pool with my iphone.
I'm well ahead and am not throwing money away which is what most insurance is.

also the price you pay for the insurance and add the deductible is quite high. around $150? just for example, the droid x came out like 8 months ago? its worth less than $200 now (you can probably get one for $150). so at this rate i can save $150 if i dont break my phone in 8 months. and even if i do break it, i can get a month that is "last gen" which at the rate new phones are coming out for android isn't really that much different performance wise.

I see what your saying but, this is only good if you have a back up phone to use while you find one for that price, purchase it and then wait for it to be shipped to you. With the insurance you'll have the phone brand new in a box in your hands the very next day.

Could somebody clear up the VZW vs Asurion thing?

I went into a Verizon store and got the $6.99/month insurance which I thought was Asurion. Some people are talking about $7 while others are talking about $5.18.

And how can you assure of getting a new phone vs a refurbished OR even a different phone which I read somewhere in this forum?

Finally, I was told the insurance only kicks in after 30 days. In other words, you don't have coverage for 30 days after getting the insurance. They start charging at that 30 day point. Is that right? Maybe I need to go back to the store and get a better explanation of what I actually have.

Yes. Go there, give them a print out showing what you have and then ask them for a brochure explaining it.

I can answer a few...

1) Insurance "kicks in" the day you made the call and made the purchase. It's just that if you don't call in the first 30 days of ownership they will not sell you insurance.

2) -$5.18 is for insurance only
-$6.99 includes the extended warranty (1 year past VZW's 1 year warranty for a total of two years)
-$7.00 no such animal. Just shorthand for $6.99.

3) Asurion has been VZW's contracted insurance agent for a long time. If you need to file a claim you go to the Asurion website, not VZW.

ThunderBolt insurance is $99 deductible. Since VZW already has a 1 year warranty I didn't think I needed an additional year. Keep in mind that Warranty issues are manufacturer defects, insurance issues are loss, damage. Two totally different things. It's not like you are gonna have two options, insurance or warranty. You'll only have one option, depending on the circumstances.

Thanks!

1) I bought the phone. Then went in a week later to get insurance. I was told then that the insurance would only start 30 days from then. In other words, I had to be careful with my phone for 30 days. I just assumed this was because they don't want people breaking/losing the phone, coming in the next day to buy insurance and then coming in the following day to make a claim.

2) $7 was MY shorthand for $6.99. haha

So basically the exta $1.81/month buys me phone defect "insurance" for an additional year. Let's see $1.81 * 24 = $43.44 but that's just for 1 year extra. Do I have that right?

1) They were wrong. If you call CS the insurance will start immediately.
2) :)
3) You'll be paying the $1.81 difference starting now, for two years. So, I see you can do the math :) Right.

Note: Dont' know about the Warranty stuff since I didn't buy it - but you can stop the insurance anytime you want with a simple phone call to CS.

Also, you can print out your own brochure form the Asurion website. Ya' gotta dink around enough until you find the print out brochure link :)

I bought insurance from Squaretrade. $99 for two years including accidental damage. The accidental damage policy does not kick in for 30 days. If your phone breaks and is still under the manufacturer's warranty, they will assist yo in filing a claim with the manufacturer first. If they refuse to repair it or replace it, then Squaretrade will. There is only a $50 deductible if you use file an accidental damage claim.

Does Squaretrade give you the extra year of warranty like VZW does? I want to make sure they are equivalent before maybe going with them instead.

Also, the pricing on the Squaretrade site is a bit off. They have Verizon insurance at $7.99/month instead of $6.99.
