Who is upgrading to S24 Ultra?

I currently have S23 Ultra. This is the 1st year that I have not swapped phones throughout the year. I have always done the fold, pixel to S series switch.

I'm intrigued by the potential S24 Ultra AI changes. Because it is more on the software side, won't most of the AI changes come to S23 Ultra.
If anything, I am interested in S24 plus.

If Samsung don't suck most of the AI stuff should come to older models. They could decide to be a big bunch of Google's about it though and just try to forget that prior customers exist.

I was in the boat where I was reluctant to upgrade, due to the time and investment spent in making my S23U just the way I like it, but I always knew that if Samsung managed to sell me on the camera improvements, I would be at serious risk of upgrading via trade-in.

However, something very strange happened. Something that went above and beyond any subconscious inclination to have the best camera experience (potentially) within the Samsung software experience.

While researching tech companies that were major investors and active supporters in a certain country currently standing accused of genocide in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), I discovered that Samsung was a major investor there.

To cut my rant short, I will not be making any more purchases which put my money directly in the pockets of such corporations, and I will keep what I currently own as long as I can, and not be sucked into any more upgrade cycles.

The evidence:

I applaud your moral fortitude, but you may want to be careful you don't paint yourself into a corner where you can't buy anything from anyone anymore. If you can't buy from Samsung because of this, and you can't buy from companies that fund China through manufacturing for similar reasons, good luck buying a phone. Every country and every massive mega corp has blood on it's hands if you look hard enough.

I do my best to avoid Nestle, but the occasional peanut butter KitKat Chunky slips through the net.

Yup, when you look at the entire landscape of major phone and electronics manufacturers and look either where the money is coming from or where it is going to, morally conscious buyers (not to say the others aren't) are damned either way.

I don't believe that these conundrums should dominate every sphere of our lives, but we should not completely lose sight of them, either, or be completely desensitized to them.

A reasonable way forward would be to hang on to what I have for as long as possible, and purchase used or second-hand goods whenever possible. It's not perfect, but it's better than buying retail or new.

I usually have a backup device but when I got s23ultra I gave my other to a dear friend. Depending on pricing on s23ultra I may upgrade and then keep S23U as back up. I will see

So the S23U was the first phone Ive kept all year long. Got it release week and haven't looked back, peeked at the pixel 8 pro but didn't get it. I've finally left the apple world and wasn't tempted back on the lastest one. I'm looking forward to seeing the new camera and AI tech. More than likely I'll trade the S23U in for the 24U. Hope they release some cool Samsung colors

I'm trying to convince myself not to, but since selling my S23 ultra and moving on to the Pixel 8 Pro, I am finding myself missing a lot of the Samsung features. Don't get me wrong, the P8P is a great device, but I didn't realize how reliant I became on some of the stuff Sammy has baked in to the software.

shouldn't you just have one of each (Samsung and Google) and be done with it? 😜

I definitely won't as I just got the S23 ultra in September and I opted for the 512gb so I can keep it longer. I plan on keeping this phone for another 1 1/2 - 2 years. It hasn't let me down or disappointed me at all. It's exceeded my expectations. I didn't think I would like the boxy design. I definitely like the subtle curve of the screen. The S22 ultra's screen was much more curved which I didn't like.

At the very minimum, I'm going to keep this for another 12-14 months. I doubt that Samsung will introduce anything new on the S25.

With any Pixel or iPhone I've had, I got bored with them quickly. Not so with this phone.

It would have to be an insane trade in for me to give up the S23U because it hasn't missed a beat since day one.
The S24U looks like a nice device and I'm sure the new Ai features will be interesting for the camera and other things, but this time around I have zero issues (unlike I did with my S22U) so there is no urge just now.

If trade in is $1,000 I'm doing it, $900 I will have to think about if for a few days and I am leaning to the no side of that also. I just don't need it and the upgrade is minimal. The AI gives me no interest.
