Who's getting the new Pixel Fold?

Guys you could buy a cheap high end Samsung phone from two years ago and get more trade in value for it than what you paid for it (eBay, Swappa) and then also sell the brand new Pixel Watch that they offer for free with the Fold and that thing would have cost you way less than $1800 when all is said and done.
Yeah that's pretty ridiculous that a 128gb S22+ is worth $650 to Google but a 256gb 7 Pro is only worth $400. Pretty crappy if you ask me. It's stupid stuff like this that makes me lose respect for Google. Especially with them saying that the Pixel 7 Pro was supposedly the best smart phone of 2022.

Seems like a marketing tactic to get Samsung users to switch to Google. Pretty dirty if you ask me. You should be rewarding those that are most loyal to your brand by offering them a higher incentive to stay with you.

It is 100% a marketing tactic to get people into the google hardware. Google isn't trying to target pixel owners, they already have you in their ecosystem. Given that pixel owners are extremely loyal to pixel. They don't have to worry about keeping your business. This is why Apple doesn't give good trade on their own devices either.

My iphone 14 pro max 128gb is getting me a trade value of $950. That more that it sells second hand and is just about the full price of the phone brand new. The reason why is they want to incentivize getting apple users into their hardware. They know that apple users are loyal to a fault, they have to make it very very enticing to get a diehard apple fan to switch. That has the benefit to users like me that don't have a brand loyalty and just get what they want to get.

I interpret it as Google knowing what their devices are actually worth even if their fans don't lololol

True, but it has me doing some creative napkin math...

If I could...
  • get a 10% discount via Google Guides (like they've offered on some devices in the past)
  • get the 10% store credit on purchase via my Google One service
  • sell the Pixel Watch for $250 (don't need another)
  • buy an S22+ on Swappa for $350 and trade it in for $650
  • sell my Pixel 7 Pro 256 for $500
then that $1799 would drop down to a much more palatable $600 after taxes, seller fees, shipping all are factored in. But that's a lot of work, lot of speculation, requires a discount that they haven't offered (yet?), and convincing myself I'd get full value from the store credit.

Thanks for doing all the work for me. It does sound like a lot of hassle and not really worth it.

If you do not like Google or their hardware why not post something constructive in the phone forum you do like ?
Because if everyone is always just being Googles yes people, they will never do any better.

I actually don't hate Google, I'm just sick of them being one of the richest companies in the world and still releasing half baked, substandard products that are as likely to get worse with updates as better. And I feel the same about people who enable them. I'm not here to make people feel bad about what they like, but people do need to know about the fact that when you buy Google, you are likely buying a headache

My opinions don't come from being an Apple or Samsung "fanboy", they come from buying Google products and using Google services and consistently having issues. I wWNT Google products and services to be good, but I'm always let down. .

If Samsung or Apple's phones did as well at point and shoot photography indoors, I'd be on one them. I don't personally have experience with an iPhone any newer than the 12 pro. But the S22+ was a huge letdown in the camera department. The S21 ultra was much better though. I still regret getting rid of that phone.

I love the software on my pixel but the hardware hasn't been as good. I had it replaced because of a bad screen. And this one overheats in direct sunlight within 5 minutes and the screen dims automatically making it next to impossible to see the screen when it does this. I never had an issue seeing my Samsung screens in direct sunlight. I have been contemplating getting the S23 ultra for this very reason but I keep holding out hope that Google will somehow fix this overheating with the next software update. And I don't want to be let down by the camera on it.

I never struggle to get great pictures with the 7 Pro. Which is why I keep sticking it out. Several times I've almost pulled the trigger on the S23 ultra though.

That view IMHO is interesting....I am the polar opposite in my view of Google I have had Google phones exclusively along with a Pixelbook and odds and ends and think they are incredible.
I have never had a Google phone fail...Unlike iphones where it was always something...Bulging batteries, bricking updates, outright failures under warranty...and the Apple Store in KOP? Absolutely awful.

So your description of half baked hardware is so out of line with my experience...You can see why I question the pertinence of your criticism.

Yet I so do not care about other phones (ios, Samsung) I would never waste a single second second being critical of them...Caveat being I have (Stock in Apple)

and my Google services ? Love them... :) I do not drive anywhere without Google maps, playing my music and a Pixel mounted on the dash feeding me info...Man...I get so excited when their new products come out...I can't tell you.

I can't remember any issues that mattered since at least back to the P5.

and the PBook I a post here with...would love to update it but it still works perfectly and gets constant OS updates after 5.5 years...

All your issues with google hardware and software I have experienced on both Samsung and Apple over the years. No company is perfect and no company will ever release a device that has zero issues with hardware or software.

The google yes people comment is laughable at best. People can spend money on what they want and it really doesn't matter what you think. It doesn't mean they are enabling them, it means they are spending their money on things they want. If you are that unhappy with google stop buying their products. Being unhappy and continuing to support them is a yes people move not people spend money on what they want.

I've never owned a pixel but I will say the foldable one caught my eye I'm gonna keep an eye on reviews for it and if I can see one in person to check out how the camera is I may jump and get one the most important thing for me is camera quality in a phone.i like the way the pixel looks compared to how samsungs foldable looks.

While this may seem weird, another advantage of the Pixel Fold is that even if somewhere down the line (hopefully never) the inner screen were to fail, you'd still end up with one of the only compact Android phones that's below 140mm tall.

It's been forever since we've seen a phone this short. And it's also 79mm wide when closed so even better for typing.

Foldables aren't for me, but I'll admire them from afar.

I'll also point out that Google did a great job with the Pixel Watch -- it's been extremely smooth and problem free for me. So they don't always mess up their 1st gens!
That's great to hear about the Pixel watch! It sounds like a very solid device!

The short fat design is 75% of the reason I preordered this device. My biggest complaint of the fold was how small the front screen is. My fingers are dumb and can’t type for crap on that small front screen lol.

Short and thin.

I preordered the Fold in the 512GB configuration (2019€ in Germany) and it will be my first foldable phone. I am still not 100% sure if I will really go through with the order though. There are some things that I like about the Fold, but I have some concerns too.
I like the design a lot, apart from the bezels.. I also like to see how well Android works on such a form factor.
I am worried though about the hinge and the fact that the Fold will not open to 180 degrees, at least no without putting pressure on the device, which I am not sure if it's a good idea..
The other thing that worries me is the battery life. I thing it will be mediocre and don't see how it will last all day.
I have an S23 Ultra and I am happy with the battery life. The Fold is not supposed to replace my S23, it should be used as a second device, more like an (expensive) experiment. I am not sure how I would use the device. I don't have a specific use case for a folding phone, but want to test the technology. Maybe I will return it in the 14 day period I have..
Durability might also be an issue, but I hope that Google will have built a device that doesn't break easily.

Yeah I saw some of the more critical views with the hinge not allowing it to be flat...So I thought how often do I lay my phone flat and use it ? My answer was never...The only time I lay it flat and use it not charge it or just place it somewhere for a few minutes is when it's playing music and it doesn't need to be unfolded...Bezels I don't care about...and battery has no effect on me.

It would be nice for Google if they can fix that issue (flat) before they go full production in June.

Clearly tho it is not for the average user.

Of course not. The device is really expensive and is definitely not for the average user. I just wonder how I would use it and that is what makes the Fold exciting to me, at least for now. I hope we will see full reviews of the device soon.

I changed my mind. I cancelled my preorder. I will wait for the reviews and then make up my mind. I am not sure about the grease and mainly the durability of the device.
I think it's better for me to just buy a Pixel 7 Pro and use it together with my S23 Ultra.
I am of course intrigued by the fold concept, but the device is just too expensive for me to experiment. Also, the first impressions of most YouTubers were concerning. They said that the device felt cheap, especially because of the main display.
