Ok, so lets say you added a line to get the phone for $199 and then canceled this new line. .......You'll be paying $9.99 for the service + $29.99 for required data plan. Over 24 months, you'd have paid $959.52 + the $199 for the phone.

Might work for someone already on a family plan, however, adding a 2nd line to Individual User Account is more that just $9.99. Way More.

yep, going from an individual plan that is costing me about $85 for my storm 2 with unlimited txt included to a 2 line family plan without unlimited txt comes out to be around $140 to me for both an incredible and the storm 2. i thought it was only going to by 9.99 for the 2nd line too but that is only if you have a family plan already.

i didn't get a contract so i can dump the extra line and go back to 1 device whenever i please and go back to the $85 or even a bit cheaper. I dont plan on having 2 lines for that long, couple months to play maybe.

Not me. My NE2 is in July and I plan to spend a most of that time looking for peoples findings (i.e. s/w bugs, h/w abnormalities). Also I want to avoid the initial batch, just in case.

If all is good, then I may ask VzW to bump up my NE2 a couple months early.

1 yr contracts nowdays seem to be an attractive alternative, it's only $70 or so more and you're not locked in as long

I second that.. Back in the day you could rock a clamshell phone for 2 years with only minor innovation. The summer of 2008 I moved to the Curve 8330, then the Storm1 drops in a few months later -- paid full retail <sigh>. Never again, I'll pay the extra $70 upfront for a 1 year contract. Otherwise I'd end up paying full retail again in less than 2 years or watch technology pass me by. And LTE will definitely be in mobile devices in less than 2 years.

also, $400 is still less than the out of contract price of $559.

i've been able to sell most of my phones for more than i've paid for them

off the top of my head:
storm1: 250
tour: 350
droid: 400
eris: 250
imagio: 250

Some people use Best Buy because they can put it on their Best Buy credit card with 12-18 months no interest. Which isn't a bad idea at all. I guess the "interest" you do pay is the $70 markup, but for those who want the phone now, its easier just to make the payments on the credit card.

P.S. I've never done it, not 100% sure you can put phones on your CC at best buy...but I have seen others say they have done it.

exactly what i'm doing....

If I decide to pull the trigger, full retail is the only way I'll get one, unless of course I win one but that isn't likely.
