My quick and overall impressions with the 9 Pro XL after a day of use is that it is mostly positive.
I am really interested in returning to the Pixel line as long as it's: 1) a good phone, and 2) still has the best camera.
The camera department is squared away. Check out a few pics below from today.
As for #1, being a good phone, that's quite a bit trickier and I have a much higher standard. This just means how the device is to use as a general smartphone. So far, calls are great, connection strong, screen is superb, battery life so far has been solid (had the camera on all day long, used it for directions, some light browsing, and still had plenty left in the tank. Something like 40+% and I'd argue today was a pretty heavy-use day), and just overall good and clean, simple software.
There aren't minor nitpicks.
I've seen a bug or two with Gmail and Photos. In Photos, does anyone's entire screen flicker every time you try to delete a picture? It only happens in Photos, and only with the Delete button. When you click anything else, share or edit, no flicker. Weird. And Gmail crashed once.
Part of the reason why I didn't mind Google holding off on delivering Android 15 with this phone is because I prefer a stable release of 14 instead. Take your time and deliver 15 when it's ready and as bug-free as possible. So I'm surprised to see a few odd bugs like this on 14. Perhaps a minor update will sort these out.
Also, is the screen brightness just calibrated differently on Pixels? I feel like you have to have it powered up 3/4s of the way to be any usable. It gets bright, but I just feel like I'm always on the higher end of the brightness meter. Did not feel that way when I was on my S23 Ultra.
I'm also surprised at how less customizable Pixels are compared to Samsung devices. I seriously cannot get rid of the date for At a Glance?? Also hate that Google doesn't allow for more icons in the bottom bar without also affecting the sizing in the app drawer -- One UI on Samsung devices allows those customizations to be separate. Anyway, I'm tired of typing (haha) so those are the only nitpicks I'll call out for now...
Overall, really liking the device so far. Really feels like Google has grown up. My greatest fear with Pixel devices are the bugs or issues (former Pixel 4, 5, and 6 owner before I finally gave up and went back to Samsung for a few years). So far so good. Google has a really buttoned up device.
Let's see how a week looks, and how the software fares when Android 15 drops. I've always called Pixel owners as beta-testers. Every update in my Pixel experience was bug-ridden. Sometimes, if an update fixed one issue, it would create another one. I never minded the 3-month or so "delay" for the Samsung update, as it felt like there were way less bugs and the system was overall more stable.
How is everyone else enjoying their Pixels so far?
