Why am I never getting red dot on the WhatsApp icon, i.e. unread arrivals?

I am NEVER getting the little red dot with white counter on WhatsApp icon on Home Screen, signifying unread messages / unanswered calls. WHY ??? How shoud I configure notifications to always get this form of notification? I think, I tried most options already without success.

should not only show images how to enable various notification options, but also publish images showing the onscreen effect of every enabled option. This would better illustrate the relation between notifications option selection and corresponding result.

Icon badges aren't supported by all phones and models, so you need to make sure that your specific device (or the launcher you're using) supports unread counters/badges on icons. Otherwise notifications will only show in the notification bar. Some launchers require extra 'plugins' to be downloaded in order for badges to be displayed.
