Why are my app badges not showing numbers? (Galaxy S8)

  • Thread starter Thread starter Android Central Question

I installed the most recent update this morning & no app badges to inform me that there are unread messages for apps (such as Facebook, email, text messages, etc).

Things tried:
1) Restarted the phone (several times), the obvious go-to resolution, nothing changed.
2) Samsung Experience was already enabled, turned off, rebooted phone, nothing changed.
3) Enabled Samsung Experience, restarted phone, nothing changed.
4) Settings, Notifications, App Icon Badges was already enabled, disabled, restarted phone, no change,
5) Settings, Notifications, enabled App Icon Badges again, restarted phone, no change,
6) Settings, Notifications, tapped the words "App Icon Badges", it was already enabled to "show with number".

Finally got sick & tired of looking & wasting my time. My sister users the new Pixel phone & had to install "Notifyer" third party app to provide an unread counter for apps.

Good Luck everyone!

After the oreo update nothing has worked for me. I have switched to Nova and TeslaUnread.. it fixed my issue with Email and Facebook but not text messages. This is a killer for me, I hope something can 'fix' this..

I tried that. It didn't work for me.
Thanks.

Think I found a fix. (at least this worked for me)

Instead of going to app settings, go to to the notification settings

settings<notifications

first thing at the very top is "app icon badges" - just toggle to on

after a few minutes, my email app counter starting working again.

I've tried every solution in this list, nothing has worked. Only started when I updated to Oreo the other day. Samsung S8. Says Android version 8.0.0 though, and I've seen others who say 8.0.1 but if I search for updates it says the latest update in installed on my phone.

Make sure you toggle badge notifications in settings / notifications to off. If you are using tesla unread to supply badges you don't need it from the android system. I found when they are both active this could cause conflicts.

Having the same issue and I've missed quite a few important messages and emails because I'm not checking them because the number isn't showing and I don't always hear the notifications come in found this link which explains the update which sounds like you can't change it.

Samsung you really stuffed this update by removing the notificaation count please put it back on the next update.

Just joined AC so that i could reply to this chain. Have been bugged by the loss of numbers for my badges for several weeks (from the prior update). Nothing worked, although about a week ago my Message+ badge started showing numbers again (go figure). Anyway, a system update was pushed to my phone last night. I have been using Microsoft's Arrow launcher, but the badge numbers didn't come back. However, I tried going back to the default Samsung launcher per advise on this thread and, voila, they are back. System still shows version 8.0.0. So, there is hope. If you can, do the update and go back to the default launcher. Good luck.

Had the same issue, updated to Oreo and now all my badge count notifications went missing. I tried all the suggestions on this page and all my toggles are in the right position. I have the stock Samsung launcher.

I figured out it had something to do with the home page. I dragged the icon (such as Facebook) to the next page and suddenly my badge counts started working. I dragged them back to the home page and they have been working ever since.

I also noticed that if I swipe to clear the notification from the top notification bar, it clears the badge count notification from the icon as well.

So far as long as I don't swipe away the notification from the notification bar my badge counts are working fine now.

Update: This isn't working for all my apps, just a few so guess this isn't a sure solution.

Oh I found a fix, for me anyway!! Someone else on here said go to settings--> apps --> 3 dots in upper right corner -> special access -> notification access -> samsung experience home-> switch on.

I am a happy camper ! Spread the word!

YAY! I spent an embarrassing amount of time - like 3 hours? - trying to fix this problem. The above intro worked!

But I still want to know how to get the individual notification shootings back.

I'm having the same issue. I already had Samsung Experience Home on, so that solution didn't work for me. I'll either have the badge show a notification, but when I open the app, nothing is there. Or I open the app, and there are notifications in the app but none on my badge. This is really frustrating.

Had the same issue. Tried the suggested fixes in this thread, which did not work, but ended up leading me to the fix.

Settings > Notifications > App Icon Badges

If your App Icon Badges option was already on, like it was for me, scroll down and look through the list of "apps you want to receive notifications from".

Every single one of my social media apps were switched off for some reason - they weren't before the most recent update. I switched them all back on and all is right in the world again. Good luck!

my fix

Settings>notifications>app icon badges (enabled)> select app for which you want to get notifications.

thanks

Possible fix...
So, the badges work on my S8 but not my wife's. I compared everything and the only difference was under notifications, mine was set to no sound. I changed hers to no sound and the icons numbers came up. It looks like sound may override visual notifications. Let's see how long it lasts

Still at a loss as to what is causing this on my wife's and my S8.

We use the Microsoft Launcher and no notification badges appear on anything. Switched to NovaLauncher - no notification badges. Even the Samsung default launcher isn't showing badges.

I've tried all the various 'tricks' that people have posted here, nothing. Ugh. Frustrating.

Microsoft Launcher updated today. In the personalization part of that launchers settings is an area for notification badges. Now it lists all your apps and the default is set to 'off' on each one. Flip the switch on the apps you want badges in and voila! All better.

If still on nova you need the companion app Tesla Unread. If you use launcher to control badges shut it off at the system level.
