over the past two weeks my battery life has gone from great to god awful. I have not installed any new apps, and if anything I'm using my phone less. my battery is barely lasting 12 hours, and these two are always the top two killers. sometimes I'll pick up my phone after it has been sitting and its ridiculously hot. I find myself turning off my phone once or twice a day just so it cools down.

any ideas??

i noticed the very same thing. sometimes when i use my phone very briefly even it gets hotter than usual. i thought it was because i had opened it up and changed the screen but seems that may not be the case. it's about time that is fixed in a SW update.

Sounds like something is out of wack. I'd try a factory reset to see if it fixes the problem and if not SBF back to a nice fresh stock installation. I wonder if some system file got currupt and is just attempting access in a loop causing the battery drain.

Wow, now that you pointed it out, mine does that too! Just checked the battery usage and found the very same thing. Not that my phone gets hot or anything...but yeah, software fix for this would be appreciated.

Gingerbread anyone?

Phone Idle = the power your phone is using while not being used (idle).

Cell Standby = The power your phone is using to search for signal - this will make your phone extreamly hot some times if it is searching for an extended period of time.

Dial *228 - Option 1 and *228 - Option 2 to update your phone programming and roaming w/ Verizon.

Ok let's get this right, you expect a software fix for a software that at this time isn't suppose to be on our devices.. That may be a wait.. :D

What are you talking about? Neither of the people with the problem cited using the GB build or a custom rom. My guess is they are running stock froyo. I don't think this is something will be fixed with some patch anyway.

When your batteries are draining quickly, are you in areas with low cell signal? I find that if I spend all day in a bunker I end up with terrible battery life.

I guess I should have mentioned....stock froyo. and no, solid 3G coverage all day

^^^ DO THAT. If that doesn't help your phone's probably going to explode on your face (kidding...) but in all seriousness something is wrong with your phone if it's getting hot and the above does not help. You should start trying to get a replacement.

hahaha...I'm kind of pulling for the explode on my face option...maybe I could get free phones for life

I am having the EXACT same problems:
-phone battery went from decent (8-10hrs on idle) to awful (3hrs idle)
-phone gets very hot after a few hours of idle
-the "battery usage" app says its 45% "phone idle" and 45% "phone standby"

Did *228 Option 1 and Option 2 work?? seems too easy to be true

If you perform a factory reset, then reload the google account and all your apps, the battery life will be fine. Until then, the unit will run at full speed trying to synchronize. My X with GB got very hot until I did the factory reset. Since then its not just cool, its cold. My battery with GB is doing better than Froyo, and my Froyo was running setCPU to reduce the CPU drain.
