why are phones that come out AFTER the EVO getting GB before it!?

What about the Nexus S 4G? Its released now on Sprint and has Gingerbread? So Sprint already has a gb phone.

That's Samsung, not HTC (just to state the obvious). Plus it's a totally different beast in that it is a true google phone, meaning that all its updates will come directly from Google, not from Sprint or Samsung. To compare the EVO to something similar, like the Epic, leaves you in the same boat. No GB update until all the new HW/SW is out and drawing new customers while enticing old customers to "upgrade." There's no getting around it, no matter how many "what about" scenarios you throw out there. Well, there is one way around it... ROOT!

Im thinking of going that route after gb comes out and its rootable I may end up going that route if TB isn't released soon I'll probably be much happier having more control over my phone

There are quite a few GB ROMs out there now.

Having an Android phone gives you two main choices

1. Jump the gun and root your phone giving you Superuser privilege. This gives you all the power in the world, but leaves you in a desert island with 1000 other weird people who love to ƒ?(|{ around with their phones. You end up flashing rom after rom until you find the one that you like. After you find a good one, another rom pops up that promises to be better and you chase after the perfect rom that will propel you into perfect life. But that never happens because all roms problems and even the 'stable' roms have huge glaring problems.

OR

2. You play the waiting game, as you beg the chain of command to give you what you want. If any of those powers in that chain decide that you can't handle something good, you will never get it. But at least the version that you get is 'stable' right. WRONG. After almost every big update there tends to be a maintenance update a couple of months later, desperately trying to fix what they over looked in the initial testing. But at least when your phone doesn't work properly you can ?17(|-| at someone else rather than yourself right? lol

I am currently playing the waiting game for two things, my EVO and Google Music, and I'm starting to get tired of the whole thing. But at this moment I don't think its worth the trouble to ROOT. After my year warranty is expired with HTC I may change my mind but until then ...I wait

OK, maybe I'm clueless. (Actually I know I am!) But do we know for sure if the "official" OTA update is going to be 2.3.3 or 2.3.4? And if it is 2.3.3 will Google Talk's video service be on it? I'm relatively new so take it easy on me! haha.

I was wondering the same thing. The only GB feature that really interests me is the google video chat.

Just root and you can have it all! There are dozens of ROMs for the EVO with just about every combination of Android + Sense you can imagine. You can also stay stock when rooted and just have access to cool apps, like free wifi hotspot! There are so many advantages of rooting that they far outweigh any of the negatives (but I can't really think of any negatives). No need to sit around wondering when you're gonna get a GB update, just load up one of the many GB ROMs out there and be happy! It's really that simple.

Yea, but you can't root without erasing your phone, right? I have no desire to erase my phone. If I can't root without erasing my phone, I'm not rooting.

This is why I'd rather have the Nexus S as my next upgrade versus the EVO 3D- Get the updates directly from Google, no bloatware, and not have to wait for the carrier's to give the update after filling their pockets. But it's a moot point for me, as in December, I will be one year into my two year contract and I'm not paying $400 for a new phone. I'd rather spend that money on a Tablet and Kal-El is coming...

I really don't believe that Sprint is waiting for the EVO 3D to be released before updating the EVO 4G with gingerbread. You can get a gingerbread phone right now on Sprint with the Nexus S. Most people haven't even heard of the EVO 3D or gingerbread and a lot of people no longer get yearly upgrades so that keeps a lot of people on the EVO. And Verizon has new phones that are coming out in the next few weeks that will have gingerbread, yet they just pushed the update for the Droid X. Why would that do that if it would supposedly kill sales of newer phones?

I think it boils down to the fact that Sprint and HTC are still working on the update and when its ready they will release it. I find it hard to believe the update is ready right now but they are holding on to it until the 3D comes out, especially with all the rumors months ago that the EVO 4G would get gingerbread first.

A little bird tells me that it's just not ready. Sprint is determined to not have anymore botched OTA's (see Epic 4G, Evo 4G) and wants it perfect. Personally, I don't blame them.

No idea if it will be 2.3.4 with Google talk video chat support, but it has been discussed.
