Why aren't I receiving Gmail push notifications on the Galaxy S6?

This works:

Menu - Setttings - Data usage - scroll down to Gmail - View app settings - click on your gmail account name - make sure Notifications is ticked AND click on Inbox sound and vibrate - make sure Notify for every message is ticked.

The good thing about this is that you can have several gmail accounts and choose which ones you want to get notifications from e.g. work vs personal accounts.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

If I'm not using the app or my phone's screen is off -- nothing.

I'm having this issue as well but sometimes i get notification and the majority of the time nothing. I have done everything but a factory reset. It is a new phone so i figured it wouldn't need a reset. Quite irritating.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

I've returned my S6 over this and hope the new one will function fine. There is NO easy fix for this problem.
It's a 50/50 chance a factory rest would fix the problem. You should not have the factory reset a brand new phone.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

I honestly don't believe it is a device problem, it is likely a software bug but it is consistent it appear if i have no activity on the phone for a while the notifications do not get set and i have no idea there are emails in my inbox.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

Let me know if you fine a fix for this problem?

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

Will do, i tried different clients and the behavior is more or less the same, a combination of ATT/google is at fault here in my opinion, whether you are using a client that is IMAP IDLE or GCM (gmail) it behaves the same.

Was having same issue. Wasn't getting Gmail notifications even though settings were equal to my nexus 7 which was working fine. I just basically turned on and off Gmail sync a few times. Then in the Gmail app setting I would turn on and off sync for individual labels and eventually it worked.

The problem is the software 100%, other gmail users are experiencing the same exact problem from what i have researched. All the tricks wont solve this problem. The issue is the notifications do not work after the phone has been idle for a while. If you are actively using your phone and not getting notifications it is likely a setting issue but the fact is the long term solution will have to come from google.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

I finally gave up on messing with gmail to get it to work on a reliable basis. I have yahoo and google email accounts and wanted a email client that worked for both and didn't have to have the sync turned on everything just to get my gmail to work.
I use mymail and it's been working 100% reliably for me with both Accounts so far. I get every email notification right away for both Accounts . And I don't have to have the sync turned on in the drop down quick settings menu for it to work.

Re: Not receiving Gmail push notifications on Galaxy S6

I can't say I blame you, it is frustrating when google releases updates and does not fully test them.

I have been doing some testing and i have what appears to be a temp solution although it is far from ideal. turning the phones wifi on and going into account and turning gmail sync on and off mutliple times works perfect for getting notifications as it should, however turning wifi off the symptoms are back, after a while on the charger and phone not used the notifications do not work.

I tried the outlook email client and it is behaving the same. I'm beginning to wonder if the deep sleep feature is causing problems

I've returned my last S6 and the new one seems to be working fine. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
A factory reset might help the problem, just make sure to sign into your Google and Samsung accounts during the initial setup. Also keep WiFi off during the setup.
I'm keeping an eye on this problem and pray it does not start with my new phone.

jetspeedz, what carrier are you on?

I have the option still to return but I'm trying to rule out the obvious, i'm on Att. I have not signed into the samsung account, i don't even have one.

The true test will be how the phone behaves after it has gone into deep sleep. Are you using Gmail app for your client?

Yes, I'm using Gmail and an app called Mailbox. Both are getting the push notifications just fine on the new phone.

is your wifi on? if it is turn it off let the phone idle for a while on the charger and send yourself an email. Just seems odd your first phone would not work and this one which probably has the same os is working. stranger things have happened but you never know

Push notifications worked fine while on WiFi, it's when the WiFi was off that I would no longer receive them.
