But this logic is only your opinion. People work and act differently. One persons benefit is another person's annoyance.

Apple doesn't research as much as delegate what they think is best. You can see this clearly by what Steve Jobs has said in the past. Things like "no one would ever buy a phone over 4 inches" clearly shows that they didn't do their research. It doesn't mean they won't continue to sell phones but by limiting their os in how their apps were designed they have no choice at this point but stay at the size they are at. Their apps can't scale, so they have no options. Even the video playback doesn't fit the full screen most of the time.
...

All these excuses that Apple is just trendy or have some mystical power to manipulate the masses is pure hogwash.

My first Mac was an iBook, an eMac soon after, around 2003 / 2004. I started going Mac because of OS X - I was a unix admin at the time and underneath it all, OS X is unix as much as Linux is.

Back then, if you had a Mac people looked down their noses at you. Mac users were laughed at and ridiculed in forums and newsgroups constantly.

Apple had zero presence in the phone space until 2007.

From those challenges we now have the biggest single phone maker in the world and a company that has over 12% of the new PC market, and continues to make inroads in both areas.

If you think for a second that has nothing to do with good design and awareness of the markets needs and wants, my best advice to you would be this - never ever invest in an individual stock with your 401k. Have a professional do that for ya.

Can I have a resume with that? I am from Canada so a 401k means nothing to me ;-) Kidding aside. Let's not get too heated. It's not healthy!
I run a marketing company that also specializes in custom software and graphic design so I have Mac's and PC's in my office. I have been doing this for 20 years and developed my first website in 1993, so I understand technology as you do. Maybe more. But who cares.

We are probably completely off topic now, sorry AC peeps.:-*

First of all I never said Apple hasn't done great things and isn't successful. Obviously they have done wonderful things. Thanks to the "All Mighty Apple" for helping us to get past a huge hurdle in technology that gave us many great things that we can all enjoy. But we can also thank Palm, HP, Microsoft, RIM, Unix, LG and Samsung and many others who have contributed to the cause of technology. Apple is but one of the contributors, but definitely a big one.

So, now that I got that out of the way.... regarding your reply, I was just stating real facts. If you think Apple is basing their decisions on market research then think again. They certainly keep a pulse on what they think customers want, but I believe they have much more of an internal agenda rather than an open sharing "What the customer wants" focus. Many companies do this so it is not uncommon. But, Steve Jobs was a loose canon which was way he was fired/quit Apple way back. Every Apple user should wake up every day and thank Bill Gates for investing in Apple and saving the company from utter destruction. Steve Jobs was a control freak that just happened to be a genius. Thankfully Apple got him back so he could continue to make great things, but he was not without his faults. Steve Jobs thought he knew what was right most if not all of the time. Lot's of people with this type of personality are like this and I see it all the time in my business. If they weren't like this they may never have been able to make the products they do. But when Steve was in the high and mighty stage he said that no one would buy a phone larger than 4 inches and that the stylus was dead, yet we now have millions of people buying phones over 4 inches and even over 5 inches and loving the stylus, so what are we supposed to say? Everyone buying these phones is wrong and Job's is still right? Apple isn't the only company that can do research and make a phone that works and does cool things. Sheesh, get over it. Apple has many smart people working for them as does Samsung, Google and Microsoft. They are all working to make amazing things. It's not about only one or the other. All of these companies know (as Nokia and RIM and even HTC will attest) that they are only as good as their latest product. If they don;t continue to stay ahead of the curve they fall off the map and become the Backstreet Boys of the cell phone industry.

Brad takes breath.:D

Furthermore, what many Apple fans don't want to look at is there have been numerous instances where ego has lead to mistakes by Apple based on self serving motives. The latest Google maps thing is a good example. They thought that they were so powerful that they could completely undermine Google and cut them out of the mix yet it blew up in their face. Did they ask all their users if they didn't want Google Maps and YouTube apps and everyone said "oh we don't care about Google maps and YouTube, please make them go away". The reality is I haven't met one person who has said they wanted these features to go away. So please continue to explain to me how Apple is doing market research?

We need to be open to what each company offers us as consumers and not be blind to what is foisted in our faces all the time. I always try to give credit where credit is due for all companies, but let's not be naive in calling it what it is. :-!

Two things:

1. That whole rant had very little to do with market research. Just because apple has done some stupid things to try and become self sufficient and under mind competitors does not mean they do not do lots of research and try and keep their consumers happy.

2. By "foisted in our faces" do you mean like the android market is forcing the huge phones on consumers.

I'm sorry but saying that Apple does no market research is ignorant and stupid. I bash on Apple as much as anyone, but they are in no way ignorant to the market trends. It's quite the contrary. It's why they are where they are.

Your point 1 is laughable. This is why they are not listening to their customers and it proves it. If they are doing market research then it certainly isn't being applied. The iphone 5 is running on the coat tails of the 4S success. Sales today does not equate to research that should be applied in a year from now.

And I never said they do no market research I said they don't always apply it. There is a big difference.

Much was similar to RIM a few years ago.

And if you don't like a big phone buy the HTC One S or the razr M. Both are smaller. What is apple offering you? Oh ya... Nothing.

The Moto droids on Verizon are locked down, have terrible cameras and except for the HDs have pathetic displays.

The only decent normal sized phone is the DInc 4G. Unfortunately it still has HTC Sense and a ton of crapware.

The iPhone 5 has a lot going for it - a great camera, light and thin, and a solid design. If you want iOS its a great phone.

My Galaxy Nexus is nice, but I'm getting sick of the huge size. Its impossible to use comfortably with one hand. I'm seriously looking for a DInc 4G on eBay so I can keep unlimited data.

Youre assuming that Apple didnt do its research, yet, they have the most successful product on the planet right now.

And again, u cant compare the one s and one x because again, all the specs are reduced.

Also, Apple may not have a 4.8in phone to prove any of us wrong, but what they do have is a highly successful 4in phone. And no Apple consumer is barred from crossing over to android to get their big screen fix. Yes.... That works both ways and ecosystem is a factor both ways. So all we got to go on is which single device is more successful and u have your answer my friend.

I'm not sure if you have been looking at the Sales numbers but Android is cleaning up on Apple. Samsung by itself competes against all other Android phones and is constantly biting at Apple's heels and has even surpassed them, so I am not sure what you are talking about. Add up only the top tier sales of the sgs3, the One x, the Razr lines and LG phones world wide and you will have the real numbers. No one under estimates Apple's success, but to assume they can do no wrong is dumb as this has already been proven many times over. Many companies have huge success by doing only what they want. Market research be damned. Don't assume that because Apple has done well that it is all in the name of market research and serving the customer because if you look at what is released its not true. No LTE until now, no replaceable battery, no NFC, no sd card, smaller screen options etc. prove that they do what they want in the face of customer desires.

Isn't it nice that you have the option to get a smaller phone? And I can get a medium sized phone and someone else can get a larger phone?

Everything is relative. In this case, relative to the human body. When a phone no longer becomes an effective communications tool, it becomes a nitch product. What's happening now is that the nitch product is the only thing available through ignorance. How do i know? Have i done market research? How about..... Because what I want is no longer available!

What's laughable is your response and deflection of my second point. What is also laughable is that you honestly believe that ios users are all brain washed and continue to buy their products only because of the brand and not because they might actually like using them...

To the superphone lover, debaters.... the funny thing about this debate is that no one is trying to take away your supersized phones. Why do you chose to focus your energy on justifying why OEMs don't make smaller size devices. Instead, u can love what you got and then advocate for choice, and accept that although we can't measure how big the small device market is, it is indeed here, and here to stay!

Just because you want something, or something fits your preferences, does not remove it from the realm of niche. Sorry. You may have trouble communication with a larger phone, but millions or people don't, and are spending their money on them. Personally, I prefer driving a manual transmission car, which has devolved into a niche market here in the US. I don't go insisting that everyone else is buying automatics because that's what most cars are available with now.

People are enjoying the larger phones both because they make communication easier, and they improve media consumption ability. They are more versatile than smaller devices, and that is what helps them become the norm.

Insist all you want that there is a secret huge population that will pass up bigger phones for smaller ones, but there is no evidence. Even with the spec difference (something which doesn't even matter to the overwhelming majority of users) if big devices were so unusable for that many consumers, they wouldn't buy them. That's why OEM's are putting out small devices that will deliver very good performance for regular users. The small subset like you, who want super high end specs in small sizes, isn't part of that majority group.

I'm using a Sgs2 so this is not true. There are lots of phones that are smaller that would kill my phone. Specs mean very little.

I know I have previously stated that I don't care either way if they do or do not make the small superphone. I'm simply trying to explain the justification of why these companies aren't dedicating the resources to produce that type of phone.
