Why do I need a case?

This is my first tablet. I can't think of any compelling reason to get a case. I have a small tablet stand for my desk, and I just put it in a cloth pouch thing when traveling. I prefer to "tablet" naked :-)

What benefit is there to also getting a case?

It's all a matter of taste really. I have cases for two of my tablets just because they convert into a stand :)

It is all preference. I have always used the pouch type case, where I take it completely out and use it naked, but I recently just switched to a case with a folding magnetic cover. For a business setting, I think the new case is more appropriate and useful, but when I am at home, I often take it out of the case because it is much easier to play games and read books when naked.

Sooner or later, it will slip from your hand, or it will drop from a table because it was resting on a pile of loose paper, or something like that, and when it hits the floor, you'll be praying that the screen didn't crack or that there wasn't any internal damage. Just sift through the forums here, or look at the pictures of shattered screens on any Google+ Nexus 7 community. Better to be safe than sorry!

The benefits are:
1. Added protection in general
2. Less scratches on the device in case you ever want to sell it
3. On good cases there are port covers which helps keep dust out
4. A case usually adds a small lip between the screen and whatever it touches, lessening the force of impact if you drop it on the screen. This gives you a better chance that the screen won't get cracked

A lot of cases also have a smartcover feature, which is nice. Just open the cover and the tablet turns on; close it, and it goes to sleep.

No, not necessarily. Don't put it in a position to fall and it won't fall.

Are you saying you've never dropped anything by accident, or never had something fall from a table? I'm just saying that accidents happen. It's fine to take the risk, but I see a lot of sad posts about dropped devices on this forum and others.

I'm not, but the only time anything has dropped or slipped, it was because it was placed badly or I did something clumsy - it didn't just jump out of my hand - so I learnt not to do those things or put it in those places.

So I just ordered a $5 neoprene carry case. I really don't want the tablet to be in a case when I'm using it. That should offer some degree of protection, at least while carrying it around.

I would say that getting a decent sleeve is probably your best option. "Naked" while in use but protected from damage while not in use or in transit ;)

Most folks never drop anything until they drop something. Sh-t happens!
Take a look at "Poetic Slimline" case. Inexpensive. adds very little bulk, protects screen from scratches and fingerprints.

No better than a sleeve. Don't get me wrong, I bought a Poetic Slimline for my 2013 N7, but I think a sleeve would protect as well (maybe better) in transit, and I don't think the Slimline will do much for a real drop if the cover is open (i.e. in use) when it falls.

It's really a personal decision. How much risk somebody is willing to accept, versus how much weight and bulk they are willing to accept.

I bought the Poetic Slimline for $6 out of curiosity, but don't care to use the N7 with a fold back cover. I'm currently using a black TPU case, that adds very little thickness, and no obstructions. I suffer from some sort of mental condition whereby if my devices obtain a scratch or a ding/dent, I no longer love them as much as I previously did. Many say TPU cases provide little to no shock absorption, but I beg to differ. I know they have prevented some serious, and tons of cosmetic damage over the years.

Am I the only one that bought the stock sleeve from Google? Its expensive but very nice. It fits my N7 with a TPU case. I feel much better with it in there when traveling. I saw a similar case logic case for the iPad mini for $39. Of course this was at university book store so it was at a premium.

It may not add much, but a little is better than none at all. I learned that the hard way when I dropped my first Nexus 7 and shattered the screen. First time I've ever dropped one of my electronics to the point of damaging it. Now I have the Poetic, which adds a slight bit of protection at least.

As with not drinking and driving, it's all the others you must be careful of! Someone else can easily have your tablet on the concrete floor before you know it.
