why do people say tmobile is cheaper?

Honestly, I don't know any more than you do do about how WFC and Softcard are integrated. I just know they are integrated into the OS deeply enough that simply installing an app can't do the job, it requires a special build of the OS. That's why the Nexus 6 has LMY47M instead of LMY47D.

Anyway, point is it's not a matter of T-Mobile not wanting to be BYOD friendly, it's a technology requirement thing.

Android since v1.0. Linux user since 2001.

I have Comcast as well but .. my main usage is at work. When out and about on the weekends I don't really use much. Also I don't like connecting to open / free hotspots around town. Even if I had a limited plan I wouldn't connect to them (security reasons).

The day my work has good wifi .. I won't really "need" unlimited any more. Below is the usage for me and my GF. Today is the last day of this cycle.

So, I've got to ask because I'm really curious...what are you doing with your phone to get to 95GB in a month? Even with WiFi, I'm sure I probably don't use much more than 10GB (of which only about 1-2GB is on T-Mobile's network). Lots of video?

Ummm TMo's 2 line plan for 100 bucks is unlimited 4G. And free international data roaming and texting. And free In-flight texting.

International data roaming is the biggie for me. I like the free music streaming too without charging to data, but LOVE the international data roaming plans. It was my single biggest pet peeve about phones.

Yep. This was last cycles usage.

I was going to pick up a tmobile line just for international roaming, but T-mobile doesn't have free international roaming where I am now. It was supported before but not anymore. So be sure to check before you leave, the list does change... Not only additions but subtraction.

True but I still have yet to meet anyone who "needs" unlimited (as in must have or they can't survive).

That is true. Internet is a luxury, not a basic survival tool. Smartphones didn't even exist 30 years ago yet people still survived . But the quality of living for my family would be reduced without unlimited data. Just like the quality of life would be reduced without a smartphone for me.

At home, the hard-line Internet providers suck. Low speeds not even enough for one steaming video feed without buffering during peak hours. My daughter is very particular. She likes to watch certain shows while she eats.otherwise she won't eat. And what they like changes frequently. There are some youtube stuff that doesn't even exist on disk even if I wanted to buy it.

So I use a Verizon 4GLTE broadband router with voice with my unlimited data plan as my home Internet.

Whew. Good tip. Scared for a second. Checked.

However, while I wouldn't want to be unprepared, T-Mobile has also gotten a lot smarter. You get text messages telling you about roaming issues now.

Subtractions are pretty rare. Speaking of Verizon, they do warn you what the rate will be. Keep in mind that they will put it in mb. So when Verizon says $20.48 per mb, that is over $20,000 per GB. Keep in mind You can get 1.5gb of 3g (att calls it 4g)for $2 locally,so that could be a better option, if you are on tmobile and they don't offer free data.

Thanks for the tip. At a certain point if it is not covered, it is probably just cheaper to buy a SIM locally, but so far, knock wood, I have yet to go anywhere that T-mobile was not covering with this plan. Admittedly, the plan is new. Maybe I will one day become more adventurous. Maybe one day, too, the phone companies will stop with this nonsense and make it a non-issue. :)

I'm a current Verizon customer that is considering a move to T-Mobile. While the difference in total cost might be minimal, I tend to like to switch phones every year. Verizon's Edge program allows you to trade in your phone after you've paid off 75%of the device cost while T-Mobile's program allows you to do the same thing after only paying off 50% of the device cost. On a $700 phone (which is not uncommon these days) that's a difference of $175.

For you guys/gals that are using T-Mobiles unlimited plan....can you tether/hotspot unlimited or is there a cap?? If there is a workaround (app), could you share which app you use for this workaround? I'm looking for unlimited because I just moved into my new place and I'm not going to get cable TV and net, just too expensive and unnecessary for my budget. I'm looking to use my devices internet for my laptop at home when I need it. I'm going to be dropping Sprint after being with them for 14 YEARS!!! I've been testing a global unlocked LG G4 with the $30 Walmart plan (100min/5GB 4G) on T-Mobile. I've been getting ridiculously fast data speeds on Tmobile over my Sprint LTE! I've been missing out on good data service, I now know! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

5GB tethering cap on unlimited.

This is correct -- 5GB on tether and unlimited phone data.

Any work around it??

Sorry, I won't help out here. Over-tetherers tend to make everyone else's experience suffer; now that TMO has started throttling "data optimizing" people, the effects are real.

Less importantly, it's against ToS.

BOOO!!!

There are ways I believe but I don't know them or try them since it is against ToS.

Raino kind of gave it away that there is a workaround so thanks to him I'll be looking for a way!

You aren't paying for a home ISP with the plan.

No, I just moved into my new place about 6 weeks ago. Don't want to get cable because the rates are very expensive and my budget doesn't allow for it unfortunately. I was thinking about hotspoting my device with unlimited data so I can get on my PC/Laptop at home and do some work (web surfing and sending emails to customers mostly). Now, I'm just thinking of either getting the TMO plan for $60 (3gb of LTE) or the MetroPCS plan for $50 (4gb of LTE) and picking up cablevisions optimum internet service (15mb/5mb) for around $56 and change. All this stuff adds up when on a budget!

I feel you and see where you're coming from. But if everyone used there hotspot as home ISP they'd just stop allowing hotspot at all. If you are really just doing emails and basic web browsing, you might get away with it. Just try to use your phone as much as you can.

There's ways around it, just don't over do it. :)

Plus its not everybody's business what u do with your hotspot if the carrier isn't complaining.

Why expect a complaint when it's already in the respective ToS that users are not to tether more than __ GB on their respective plans? Even if they caught someone, an actual "knock it off" would be a courtesy; I would just terminate the account.
