Why does my LG G3 screen flicker and fades to darkness?

I also just started having these problems with my lg g3 phone. I tried the paper solution suggested above but I did not have a screwdriver to remove the panel covering the back of the phone/motherboard. I put a folded piece of a notecard up by the laser sensor and a larger piece over the battery, hopefully holding it tighter to the circuits. This solution has turned out to be super temporary. Instead of seconds before the screen darkens, I get maybe a few minutes. It definitely is affected faster if I'm running games or streaming video. Basically anything that will make the phone run hotter.

I am outside my warranty and may just try to upgrade my cell phone mid-contract.

This started happening last week and I either pay LG to repair (which will likely be around $150) since I'm >15 months OR pay my Verizon insurance $150 (plus the fact I've been paying $10/month for 18 months= $330 total). Lesson learned:insurance was a waste of money but at least I can get the phone in a day not weeks like with LG.

From this thread it seems like its a hardware issue (def not the screen or Lollipop) so is the cost to repair by 3rd party really going to be any cheaper? The phone repair company close by said they could order me a new battery and test it but that seems useless. I have dropped it here and there but I don't know if an Otterbox really would have prevented the hardware from getting messed up - what do you all think for future purposes?

Hi Bishop,

Where exactly do I apply the paper? I get that I should put it between the laser and the camera, but should I just take off the back cover? Or do we need to unscrew the cover to get inside the phone?

Thanks!

I had to unscrew the back to be able to see what he indicated in his photos. It worked for a while but stopped working. I ended up paying my Verizon insurance deductible for a new phone (I agree, insurance a bit of a waste since I can buy an unlocked phone online. I am about to send the bad phone back and was unsure I could do a factory reset since the screen almost NEVER works at this point, even with the paper. But, if I push the power and volume down buttons simultaneously eventually a phone recovery screen pops up. That screen hasn't ever failed or faded to black. Doing a factory reset AND starting it in safe mode did not resolve the problem so it's clearly a hardware issue.

By the way, Bidhopx26, how did you figure out to put the paper between the camera and the sensor??

I didn't unscrew anything I just put the paper under the back panel. Though now a little over a week later and the screen just faded back to black. I put a fresh piece of paper in (thinking maybe the original piece flattened too much. So far so good, but it's only been a few minutes.

They admit to faulty G4 hardware, unfortunately my issue is on a G3 phone. Wonder if they'll repair for free as well.

What I don't understand is why there hasn't been a class action suit on this bs.
The phone is faulty. My wife and I got our phones at the same time. Mine is now exhibiting this problem with the screen fading randomly then becoming unresponsive.
My wife's phone the all the radios (bluetooth, WiFi, Data) will work whenever the hell they feel like it.
Something told me that this phones problem with overheating would eventually kill this thing.
I'm done buying LG phones. I'll stick to Moto or Samsung.

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

I had the same problem, and put the paper between the laser and camera without moving anything. It worked for a while, but I was never able to get WiFi or bluetooth to work. I'm using a prepaid phone for now, as I still have unlimited data on Verizon and I don't want to mess with it. I was very happy with the phone until the sudden change.

I'm just trying this out tonight. I had factory reset it earlier while testing. I came across this fix so I'm trying it out. I ran about 4 minutes of 4K 60fps video streamed from YouTube, and the phone handled it just fine. I'm in the process of re-downloading all my apps and setting my phone back up. So far so good - really hoping this solves the problem, but it seems like it's working so far!

Originally I posted the above in the first few days of January. The folded cardboard works for a day maybe 2 max before the issue comes back.

I have wedged a small piece of cardboard at the tail of the battery so it fits tightly against the contacts. I also rooted and have installed a custom ROM (CM 12 if anyone cares). Can't make it worse than it was this week, so I'm hoping for some improvements.

I think overall anything short of a brand new phone is just a short term fix, but I'm hoping I can get a few more months out of my phone for now.

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

Yet another victim of this growing manufacturers defect issue. Attempted an out of warranty service on an otherwise perfect device via live chat with no success. Referenced this article with no success or major concern. I will be watching this thread until a resolution is reached, as my g3 is still owed on.

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

My phone started doing this and I searched forever to find this forum lol. The screen went black but haptic feedback still present. I had the same issues as everyone else. I sent it to LG and they sent it back "fixed". Said speaker \mute was the problem. Guess what happen 2 days later.... Same thing so I sent it back. I am currently waiting on it to get back and hopefully it will be fixed this time. If not, I'm going to become super pissed.

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

My phone broke on Saturday. Currently awaiting LG to confirm they will accept the device for repair. I had to send photos of my phone to them to show there is no physical damage to the device. No impressed that this screen issue is quite common, going by this forum.

What email address did you send your claim to?

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

I am in the UK and I called my provider, 3. After a quick discussion and as it is within warranty they put me through to LG to lodge my issue.

I emailed cic.uk@lg.com

I am still unsure if they will perform a repair or not.

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

Update on my phone. 5 days ago I rooted my phone and installed a custom ROM. I also put a piece of electricians tape at the base of the battery (on the end opposite the contacts). Since then I've had absolutely zero issues. Something in LG's software is the culprit although a ensuring a firm contact between phone and battery never hurts

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

That is very hopeful news. What rom did you use? Also what exact model phone do you have?

D-852 (its an 850 but built for the Canadian market). I tried both CM12 and CM13. CÇM12 is stable and CM13 is nighlies/beta. Both worked well for me.

I still have a folded paper in my phone but it seems to work now!!

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

I wanted to reply to this forum so when LG finally looks at this they see just how many people they screwed over. I am still making payments on this stupid phone (they have the nerve to charge $600 for a faulty product?) and it survives only a month after the warranty expires, suspicious to say the least. Any way, Instead of unscrewing the back of the phone to slip in a piece of paper I have just been using my fingers to pinch really hard (one finger on the screen one finger on the back between the camera and the black sensor) which will work enough to usually get the screen to turn on to i can check what ever text I just received. once or twice the squeezing got the phone to work for a whole five minutes with out incident. I dont know if other have been having this problem, but since the problem developed my battery has been leaking like a leaky faucet. I started with 100% battery at 10am, and by 1pm I was down to 20%, this is while the phone was unresponsive, and therefore I wasnt even using it. This is abnormal for my phone (despite the still sucky battery). Personally, I am not bothering sending my phone back to LG just to have them charge me the price of a new phone to "fix it" but not fix it, and I am just going to replace it.
