Why does my LG G3 screen flicker and fades to darkness?

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

Does anyone know if this issue is related to a certain serial number and build date?

Possible.... Anyone willing to post and keep track? I'll gladly post but don't have the time to log S/N or build date info.

I have been dealing with this issue of the screen fading to black for the past month now, and it started right at about the year and-a-half mark of using this phone. It's pretty upsetting when I still have 6 more months left on my 2-year contract to pay off this phone, and the problem is some sort of hardware issue with the motherboard (Or at least that's my assessment after reading this thread). After following this thread for the past few weeks, I finally decided to give my input/solution to see if what I did to my phone possibly works for anyone else.

I don't know if anyone else has tried this or not, but I did this and my phone has been working perfectly for the last 4 days in a row after getting progressively worse (putting paper next to the camera and over the battery seemed to help a little, but then after a week, my phone was barely working at all). 5 days ago, In the developer options I changed the, 'Background process limit' setting to 'At most 1 process' for one day, and then I changed it back to 'Standard limit' the following day. This seemed to drain my battery the day I had it set to 'At most 1 process', but the next day I changed the setting back to 'Standard limit', and my phone started working completely normally again with no issues...

... I'll post again if anything changes, but as of right now, my phone is still working. Hope this helps someone!

I'll give it a shot. It's worth trying I guess! Keep us posted

@Hydao : I'm currently running android 4.4.2
Build number: KVT49L.D85010d
SN: 406KPCA050955

And also, for an update, my phone started acting up again today. I took the paper out yesterday, so it possibly was just the paper that was helping. I'm going to change the settings in the developer options again like I suggested in my previous post, and see if it gets better again. I got a nexus 5 for $85 a few days ago, so if LG wants me to pay to get my phone fixed, I'll just have to accept the fate of this phone and move on. It just sucks as I wouldn't even be able to use the device which I'm still paying for on contract.

Hello everyone, this is how I got my problem fixed.
I first contacted lg support via email explaining the problem
Within a few days I got a response saying they had booked it for repair under warranty (by the way my phone was over a year old)
I then was told a dpd van would pick it up and I had to arrange a time
They picked it up and took it away to the repair centre
A week later I got the phone back and was fixed , didn't cost a penny
On the repair notes they had replaced the motherboard!
I think the only way to fix this problem is to get a new motherboard, try getting it through lg. hope this helps :)

Hi
finally I found the perfect solution for this issue,

No need to call LG company
No need to replace any part of your smartphone
No need to pay for anything :D

this is a software issue believe me or Not !! it's not about any piece of hardware ........... yeh it's look like a hardware issue but it's not
I have an LG G3 and I was have Exactly the same problem .

All what you have to do is :

* 1 Root your phone [ be careful in this step ] .
* 2 Install TWRP recovery mode
* 3 use TWRP recovery mode to install CloudyG3 2.5.

That's all and your smart phone will be look like LG G4 , fast, smooth, and New

850 Model for Canada (I think). Mine is stock and it started doing the flicker a few days ago, seemed to get worse with heat or intensive apps.

I attempted to factory reset and that didn't do a damn thing, so don't bother. My android version is 5.0.1 so it isn't related to some new software update either.

I think it's hardware like others have mentioned lately. I'm currently trying the paper trick and it's much better (for now). I have a ticket in with LG Canada to get this fixed however I don't know if it's in warranty or not. They're going to call me later today and chat about the process. I'll update with any interesting news. I'm very concerned that if I send it in they'll fix the wrong thing like they have with many others. I'm wondering if I can somehow get them this thread or straight up tell them that a repair shop said I need a new motherboard, and be done with it.

Others are stating it's 15 months warranty? I thought it was 1 year manufacturer, so where does this 15 month number come from? I'm literally at 14.5 months right now :-\

Has someone else tried this?
@uk747900, how long has it been since you performed this fix? Is your phone still working fine?

Now it's been 5 days without any issue it's working Great like I have G4 not G3
What I have discover is that LG G3 official firmware update effecting the device LCD and make it fleker and fading out when there a lot applications running in the background !

note: it's easy to root LG G3 (all brands) with just one click app
give it try and I am ready to help any one any time

The whole firmware update that you mention doesn't seem to make sense, as I never updated any software on my phone before the problem started (or ever, for that matter since I rooted the phone right after I got it), and many people have already confirmed that it is a hardware problem, as evidenced by the fact that putting pressure on the motherboard using paper seems to help and the fact that people have reported on this forum that their phones were only fixed after LG replaced the motherboard. But I'm wondering if there is something true to the thing that you said about applications running in the background. Perhaps changing the software affects the hardware problem? Messing with the Background Process Limit, did seem to change something at least. At first, after changing that setting, my phone worked fine for 5 days, but then started acting up again. The second time I messed with the Background Process Limit, it didn't seem to help much. Hopefully LG will fix my phone, as they have others, since either way, this is not a user-created problem. Maybe changing the Background Process Limit affects the hardware in terms of how warm the phone gets? Thanks for your suggestion though, as I am willing to try it if LG doesn't fix my phone.

Another thing to add, I have the HDMI to micro usb cable plugged into my phone.....even thought the screen is black. it continues to work via HDMI on the tv.

Now it doesn't seem like a software issue again. Ughh

Quick update for myself; I spoke with Nikka on the LG online chat and she agreed to do a one-time fix for me even though I'm out of warranty (yay!). However she didn't call me back and I had to chat again with Benjamin who sent me the necessary info over email.

I'm going on 2 days using the "paper fix", and I don't think my phone flickered even once yesterday, and I used it enough to drain the whole battery by supper time. I'd have to say this is definitely a hardware issue, there's absolutely no reason that software could respond to physical changes in the phone. Just sayin'

I was have this problem over a month ago and I read every single topic about this problem and tried all the possible solutions including adding a piece of paper over the motherboard and changing some values in the devoloper page like process limits but all this didnt fix this issue .
If you are going to change the motherboard so you are changing your phone . just buy a new one . unless you have on going warranty so you will change it for free.
And about the update ; the phone will update automatically when it get an access to the internet.

All what am asking is some one to try my fixe and confirm if it working or not .

And for me my phone working perfectly ... While i am putting it under supercharge like openning a lot of apps and dowloading and playing music in same time it get overheating but it is not flickering and fadeout like it was. Before

So guys trie it and let me now.

Correction. Canadian model G3 is 852. Sadly mine seems to have reached to point of death...I'll somewhat keep an eye out for a motherboard but I don't think it's worth it. Trying to find an 852 motherboard will probably be more frustrating and time consuming than its worth.

Too bad. I really liked cm13 on it!

I opened up my mobile.. Removed the logical board and I have putted some processor paste on the processor and the little square Under it.. Think it solved my problem.. 3 days passed and no more overheat of the cpu (apu-procesor and graphic unit) and no more screen flickr

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

Trying different cardboard placement and adding thermal compound. Running through several wipes and reinstallation of ROM (and GAPPS), along with heavy use all day. Not a single flicker or fade (yet). Running CM 13 nightlies so we'll see. Won't be convinced until I can run over a week without issue

Hi,

Please keep us informed.

Thx

I wanted to share my thoughts. My G3 started flickering and fading to black about 12 hours after updating to marshmallow from Verizon.
I went to Verizon and called LG with no help besides pay for a repair.
I started with holding the power button and down volume key and clearing cache. This helped some initially. I then changed to one background process limit and added paper over camera connection. Neither of these helped out for long. However, I then turned off vibration settings for all calls and notification. Since I did that I only have had one case of fading to black in 24 hours and it immediately responded back on with nocking. Hope this helps.
