Why does my LG G3 screen flicker and fades to darkness?

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

I hope that is not the case for me. I'm supposed to receive delivery today of the repaired phone.

Good luck. Let me know if they fixed the issue. Took mine about a day until the screen started fading again after they supposedly fixed it. Also curious if they sent you back the same exact phone (repaired) or if they sent a different (possibly refurbished) device.

Hey all so I have had this same exact problem over the last week or so. Started one morning after I left Gentle Alarm on in night mode (usually don't do that) all night. Finally found this thread (thank you btw) and worked with LG Live Chat to process a RMA to get this fixed.

Got around to backing everything up, saving my pictures and my Nova Launcher settings, unmounted my SD card and was just about to perform a factory reset. I decided to uninstall Nova (Prime version) and now what would take at most a min; the screen flicker, freeze, and fade to black is not happening. I've only been testing this for the last 30 min, but this is the longest I have gone with out the topic issue.

I only saw Nova mentioned in one post, but seeing how laggy the LG launcher is, are most people here using Nova? I am holding off sending this in until after the weekend if necessary for more testing, but this seems really strange, especially since it looks (and acts?) like a hardware malfunction.

The only other thing that has changed between the last glitch fade besides uninstalling the launcher is that I don't currently have my SD card in.

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

I was not using Nova launcher, so I don't think that's it. I was using an SD card.

Yeah this really weird. So far since I last posted, nothing happening (in a good way). I'm going to stick with no 3rd party launcher. Going to throw the SD card back in before I leave work today.

Will keep everyone posted.

I contacted LG and my phone is on its way to them, should get there Monday. So we'll see what happens.

I had Nova installed as well but I factory reset my phone and took out my SD card and sim card before sending it out and for about 15 mins I couldn't get through the LG set up screen, that's how bad the phone/screen was acting even after a factory reset.

I felt that when the phone was cool, the screen would work a bit better but once the phone started heating up, the screen would start to flicker, fade, not turn on, etc. I'll update once I get my phone back.

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

I received my phone back from LG yesterday and got it up to speed today. So far, all looks like it's fixed. I'll update if anything changes.

Did you get your original phone back or did they ship you a refurbished phone? Any notice ad to what was wrong with it or what they did to fix it?

So it started up again Saturday evening :( Sending it out now. A little discouraged hearing that todeo70 still had this problem after getting it back.

It's really weird that after uninstalling Nova it stopped having issues. Before that, that same day included, the issue was consistent for the last week. It would fade out within the min, if not after a few seconds of waking it up. I do have a battery app on the phone that also tells me the current temp and that doesn't seem to have anything to do with it either. The only other thing if not hardware (I think it's hardware) is that I noticed my phone updated 15 days ago, thought the initial message on this thread was posted in May. Ok I'm going to stop playing detective and just send it in :)

I'll keep an eye on this thread as well as report back in once I get it back.

Speaking of repair vs refurb. If you are using that method through the provider where you pay monthly for your phone, are there any issues when it comes time to trade it in?

Hi Guys...
Totally frustrated with this.. Have tried all the available Roms thinking it a software is ue as it started only after the lollipop upgrade, I am now on Resurrection Remix but the problem still persist.
It started with a sim error and now sim doesn't detect and SD card malfunction. So thinking of changing the Sim/SD slot but not sure it will sort the issue of the screen blackout.

Just hunting through forums but this doesn't seem to be a wide spread issue so nothing much out there.

PS: The phone is out of warranty.

I think those are two separate issues maybe? The screen blackout (at least I think for most of us) seems to just be the screen as you can still navigate the phone after it fades. I actually completed a text before getting it to light up again, and you still get the haptic feedback.

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

Do you all guys have the same model of LG G3 that is associated with this issue or different models you have ,,,

This may be LCD panel issue as it may not be LG panel as we saw in some models of some carriers that use AUO panels ... Or may be an issue with LG panels themselves ... Who knows ...

It was the same device (it had the same IMEI). They replaced the screen. They showed online the progress of the repair.

It's the same issue.. Haptic feedback does work even with the screen blacked out. It just fades into darkness like your phones. Just that now I have to deal with the Sim/SD issue also.

If you check 'force GPU rendering' and 'disable HW overlays' in the developer options it has stabilized my phone. I also did a reset to factory defaults.. i think my GPU is starting to fail, but with the above settings it works

Looks like my phone is being shipped back finally. For those that checked their status online did it simply say "RA closed, Unit shipped back to customer?"

Just a little paranoid (not too much) since they state before you send it:
- If the device is damaged and deemed repairable charges may apply.
- If the device is deemed as un-repairable, the device will be returned to you as-is.

I always seem to think back to those types of IT issues at work; where you open a ticket, IT gets to it but can't duplicate the issue, and then nothing gets solved :)

After letting it sit for a day and uninstalling some app (not related) it took another two days for the screen issues to start back up.

Anywho, hope to get it back soon and play around with it for a day or two. I'll report back my experiences.

So I received an email from LG last night and while I know now they did work on it, another concern has come up. Maybe it was the ultimate problem but this seems really weird.

They said the defect was the Rear Camera / Video, and that they fixed the camera.

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

I'm fairly certain this is a hardware issue guys. When I sent my phone in for repair to LG it came back with a service request form, the work performed was repaired loose parts it had said. So if you drop you phone enough or it absorbs too much shock (i.e. bike mount) you can knock the small parts loose and perhaps cause this issue on the G3. Just my 2 cents.

I have to share my experience. Hopefully we can have a more complete thread on this soon.

Att d850 G3 exhibits same issues but more frequently.

(screen would go black then flash a black screen on and off)
(Factory reset did nothing)
(same issue when booting in to download mose and recovery mode)

I sent my G3 to LG's repair center in Fort Worth. A few days later I get a call from them asking for permission to "unlock" the phone. They warn me that by doing so this procedure will delete my google account.
Since I had already done a factory reset I wanted to know more. I played dumb and the LG guy explained it to me like this "We have to unlock the phone to repair it. The part of the phone that is being unlocked is the kill switch"
He then proceeded to explain it to me calling it "the anti-virus" of the phone. I wish I would have gotten more technical with him so I could truly understand. He didn't make any sense and the kill switch part is the only thing that made sense to me. Almost seemed suspicious.

He said if I didn't authorize them to unlock whater they are going to unlock then they were going to return the phone as is. I gave them the go ahead. Also, I mentioned that the call was being recorded as I do with all non personal phone calls.

Hopefully I can just get this thing fixed and sent back.

Really have no more love for this phone. I have had far to many issues. Headphone jack bug, battery issues, a previous motherboard, and now this. This phone is a refurb they sent me. So that's 2 out of 2 D850's that have given me trouble in a little over a year.

the end :-\

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

^^^Welcome to the G3 forum. :)

Yes, the Kill Switch feature is a security measure on the G3.
Hope all goes well....let us know what happens.
