Why does my LG G3 screen flicker and fades to darkness?

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

Please keep us informed.

Thx

Still running strong so far, almost 48 hours running (with an automatic reboot scheduled for 3am every morning).

I had a thought - is everyone using auto brightness? I'm wondering if this may be a factor. I use it mostly turned on (automatically adjust for brightness) but it didn't seem to make a difference. Then again I wasn't paying attention to that variable.

Let me know what you all think!

Hi
finally I found the perfect solution for this issue,

No need to call LG company
No need to replace any part of your smartphone
No need to pay for anything :D

this is a software issue believe me or Not !! it's not about any piece of hardware ........... yeh it's look like a hardware issue but it's not
I have an LG G3 and I was have Exactly the same problem .

All what you have to do is :

* 1 Root your phone [ be careful in this step ] .
* 2 Install TWRP recovery mode
* 3 use TWRP recovery mode to install CloudyG3 2.5.

That's all and your smart phone will be look like LG G4 , fast, smooth, and New

Sorry bro, but I don't think it's software. If several people here are saying they had the motherboard replaced and it fixed it (under warranty) why would rooting and installing a custom ROM fix it? Mind you I already did the same as you did and it did NOT fix it for me.

I replaced the screen, upgraded from 4.4.2 to 5.0.1, then rooted and put on 6.0.1 and it still flickered. Paper trick has helped mine though. YMMV obviously.

Yeah hardware failure seems the most likely culprit. Cardboard worked for me at first, then that stopped working. Now that I've got a phone for daily use I can mess around with my G3.

I think the issue is heat combined with weak solder joints (which is why using cardboard temporarily fixed it for several of us). A healthy dose of thermal compound in a few places seems to have it running cooler for me although I didn't take measurements or benchmarks. It doesn't feel quite as warm under normal use when I'm holding it.

Still going strong at this point. If this holds up through tomorrow I'll post pics where I put additional cardboard and thermal paste.

Thanks for keeping us updated! I also have a phone for daily use now, so I've been messing around with Roms and what not, but as everyone else has experienced, flashing different Roms has not seemed to solve any issues. I'd love to try adding some thermal past though if this works!

Ugh, I just started having this problem today, after having the phone for around 17 months. When I have time, I will open it up and try the thermal paste solution too.

Finally got my G3 back from service. They replaced the screen and it is working fine (Except the camera wouldn't work. I had to take off the back and push the camera cable in properly.) . A bit curious that there are so many of us with this fault and no apparent input from LG to this discussion.

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

I am in the UK and I called my provider, 3. After a quick discussion and as it is within warranty they put me through to LG to lodge my issue.

I emailed cic.uk@lg.com

I am still unsure if they will perform a repair or not.

Just for info, LG sent me a replacement handset in the end, looks like a refurbished one. In pretty decent condition, no worse than mine originally. I'll await to see if i ever get this issue again.

Please do post when you get the chance, purchased some thermal paste and hope to resolve this.

Also, a note to everyone, the issue tends to go away and reoccur randomly. Thus whatever "solution" you have, you should probably give a week or so to truly test it's effectiveness.

Hey guys. I have an lg G3 and also experiencing the same problem After 18months of usage .i send it to lg service centre here in Philippines but they said its board problem which is too expensive here (almost the same price as brand new) . I also tried to consult the problem at local mobile phone repair shop here but they said its an PCs problem . What do you think? Which is really the problem? I want to try the cardboard thing but I still hope LG will issue a recall about our Unit. Is this possible? Because I'm very disappointed, since I bought it for a 2 year contract payment at one of our service network provider but now it is not functionin. I'm still in debt of it for 6 months more but I can't use the phone already. Can you please give me advice what to do? I still want to use this phone .haysss. Thank you. Is Anybody here also from Philippines?

Starting having the same old issues yesterday and today it's back to being basically useless. Short of replacing the motherboard, I see no solution. And for the cost of a motherboard I might as well add some money on top and buy a whole new phone. I've actually been taking a close look at BLU phones as well as Elephone (along with the usual players for North American markets).

Thermal paste only delays the inevitable it seems.

Before I saw dancing-bass' reply, I opened up the phone, pulled off the motherboard, and applied some Arctic Silver 5 to the square depression in the metal under the motherboard (it would be right beneath the down-volume button if the back were on,) and also to the top of the chip that fits into that depression. I used about 1-1.5 times the amount I would use on a desktop computer CPU -- it looked like there was a gap to fill, so I used more than I normally would have for that size chip. For good measure, I also put a piece of plastic, maybe .25mm thick, under the power button assembly to press the chip down into the compound.

So far, so good, but dancing-bass' report does not give me hope for the medium term.

EDIT: And around 18 hours afterwards, it began flickering again. :(

I wouldn't do that, but I may try the heat gun trick that sometimes works when there are overheating problems. I'm a bit too busy to mess with it right now, though.

Post links or info. I may attempt it myself, it's not like I can make it worse

Cannot post links yet but this could be useful to some, resistor layout is different on my D855 did give it a go with heat gun without success.

Update: Baked the motherboard in oven today for 8mins at 200c and so far its been fine but let's see how long it holds up.

Good point. I have done this with both an XBOX 360 and a Macbook Pro (!) The repairs I have done have typically lasted a matter of months, recurring because the underlying heat issues remained. Basically you use a heat gun to try to reflow the solder balls beneath the chip. Here is a link to the basic idea for the XBOX 360, but it's a pretty similar idea no matter what the device.

Since I am too much of a noob to post links yet, you will find a guide on ifixit titled this: Reflowing+Xbox+360+Motherboard/5845

When I have the time I may try it myself -- till then, I have a BLU Life One X coming. I'm a little tired of the upgrade treadmill, and figure a fairly high-rated $150 device might be just the ticket this time.

Maybe I'll try it this weekend, I'll see what happens.

I'm personally looking at the BLU Pure XL myself. A bit big maybe but looks like an incredible phone for the money. Unfortunately the exchange rate between the Canada/US dollar makes it less of a deal :(

That looks like a lot of phone for the price, but my buzzword this time is "cheap, but not too cheap." I've been using flagships for so long (G1->G2->S3Galaxy->G3,) that I want to see how happy I will be with something that works like a flagship from a couple of years back. So far, the only thing on the G3 that I think I'll miss on the BLU is the extra 16 GB of storage, but I think I can fix that with a bigger SD card.

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

I just called LG and, according the rep I spoke with, this is primarily a software issue. Judging by the bulk of this thread, my experience with my G3, and intuition, it is primarily a hardware issue in my eyes. However, this issue seems to usually be initiated by software changes.

The rep continued to tell me that LG and Google were aware of this issue occurring and were getting together to send out a patch that will fix it. I asked about a timeline, and she said that the development process is well underway, and this patch will be sent out within a week.

I have big doubts, but it may be a sign of LG's acknowledgment of a serious device issue.

Hi all. I found the site because of this isue anyway i tried the paper thing and it worked. I have no kimd of warranty (second hand) I have gone to phone shop and they said new screen but i explained the issue but they seemed adiment i need a screen. I also went online i bent up the pins on thwmicro sd card slot cause the thing kept mounting and unmounting so i had a brain wave and shoved a bit of plastic in it and hey Presto i bent the pins up. So i got a quote online and they said for a screen and the m slot would be £105 or i can get the slot done for 55 and get it sent to diognostics for 17.50 to see if its a loose conection i dunno what to do cause im worried ifi get it fixed it will happen again but i also think its cheaper than buying another pbone of a same spec plus im then left with a worthless phone. I would like a 5.5 or bigger screen phone. What have you guys decided to do at least you without a warranty. Shall i just put it down to experience and forget lg im very temted by a contract on the edge but the data deals suck here in uk can be expensive i have no wi fi. If you read all of this thank you and sorry for going on so much ✌
