Why does my Nexus 7 Tablet battery drain so fast ( with the Lollipop update)?

The tablet just stops and wants to be cleaned or have the processor cooled off, at least that is the only way I can get it to function. Sometimes it needs a reboot just so I can do the cleaning and turn off some apps (lots of google apps that cannot be removed). If I try to use it when it is acting up, the battery will discharge from 100% to 30% in about 2.5 hours. Can I salvage?

Did you do a factory reset after the update?
