By going blank I mean the screen goes dark, I don't see anything as if my phone is dead. The call gets placed anyway, but I just feel lost not seeing anything on the screen.
Welcome to Android Central! The proximity sensor might think that it's already up against your ear, which causes the screen to turn off (to prevent your ear or face from pressing any onscreen buttons). If the phone isn't up against your ear and it's doing this, then something might be obscuring the sensor. Do you have a screen protector or a case on?
Make sure the area over the proximity sensor (which is right near the front-facing camera) is completely clean. Has the screen protector been on for a long time, or did you just put it on after which the problem started? If the latter, then you may need to remove the protector.
