Why have the recent apps button and the drop down settings buttons stopped working?

[AC Question]

It seems that my recent apps button and the drop down settings buttons have stopped working quite suddenly. I removed all recently downloaded apps, tested the touch screen which worked right to the edges and even did a factory reset to no avail. I took it to carphone warehouse geek squad who said it was due to a Samsung update but I'm not so sure. Any one having similar issues have any fixes please?
