Why I took back my AT&T One X

Hey guys... I'm new to Android, but am curious as to why it's best to avoid using a task killer?

Thanks.

For one, they can be overly aggressive and cause system instability. For two, they've largely been unnecessary since Google introduced a native task manager into Android.

Does anyone think that HTC designed the multitasking this way on purpose to save battery life? It's frustrating because HTC went and ruined the stock ICS multitasking with the one on the HOX, added a bunch of useless eye candy and now I have a capacitive button that is basically useless.

That doesn't make any sense. (Pun intended).

It takes way more power to redownload a Web Page than it does to simply redisplay what is already in the video buffer.

They wouldn't intentionally use more power in an attempt to save power.

It seems to me that this is an accidental oversight.

My tests seem to indicate the restart of tasks ih highly correlated with main memory utilization. If you run Chrome and the stock browser at the same time (or switch back and forth) you utilize a lot of memory. I'm betting HTC never tested the last update all that intensively and missed these restarts.

I guess I really need to read up on this multitasking issue\likes\dislikes that everyone is speaking about. Thus far I've not seen an issue, albeit, I hardly press the 'multitasking\task manager' button...

I never used it on my vivid, but with this phone I was really looking forward to using it. If HTC is going to primp the multitasking like they did just to make it look nice then the least they can do is make it function properly. Has anyone else noticed that when you use multitasking for you tube on this phone that the you tube app will actually not start up if you left it while a video was playing?

Let me ask you all this then, Would you rather have,

1. All day bettery life

2. Apps that resume where they left off.

If apps being closed gives me all day battery life, I am MORE than happy to live with this rather little issue.

Why can't we have both? My GSM Gnex gives me all-day battery life and still has proper multitasking. I'm not sure we should have to choose.

So some of the other HTC devices, Rezound, etc have leaked Sense 4 builds.. does this happen on their device?

Is it specific to the One series? Do the S and V do it?

This can't possible be a "bug".. Sense 4 is close to perfection(in my opinion) and it looks as if it was a design decision.

No HTC phone outside of the One series (and anything announced but unreleased) has an official Sense 4.0 build. If it's a ROM it's not really a direct comparison.

Really, though, if you want a phone that behaves exactly like ICS is supposed to (the way Google designed it to) on the Galaxy Nexus, then get the Galaxy Nexus. Otherwise I wouldn't expect or hope for HTC to change the way memory management is done. IMO if you're not happy with the way it operates today then go return it. I personally don't expect HTC to "fix" it, but if they do I will be happy and won't complain. :)

There are very specific activities that cause this behavior, and ICS is far more aggressive at managing tasks than previous versions of android.

The scenarios that cause this are not super specific...it is a very broad and severe problem. Android, unlike other platforms, actually allows apps to continue executing instructions when put in the background, they are not instantly forced to suspend. Android will only remove it from memory if necessary, at which point the app will be asked to save its state. This permits using apps like Llama and Tasker, and it also means apps shouldn't have to "reload" when you switch back to them unless you opened tons of things in the meantime or haven't used the app for several days. It appears the One X is evicting things from memory almost as soon you as you leave the app (or after two or three). Some have said it will do this even if the app has a presence in the status bar. So, a timer app might not fire, music might stop playing, if you leave an app that CAN'T save state (like Pandora) to do something else and come back your station will reload from scratch. This is likely an attempt from HTC to improve the battery life and customer satisfaction with the device by preventing most code from running in the background and limiting the damage that poorly coded apps can do, however in the process they have severely hobbled the capabilities of Android. This needs fixed for this phone with its stock firmware to be worthy of consideration.

This is my complaint e-mail sent to HTC and AT&T

English is not my primary language so please bear with me.

Multitasking: The phone can not multitask at all. Games, or apps. ex; I was running Runkeeper auto pause mode enable. Stop during my ride to check phone settings and make some changes. The phone killed my application deleting all my data. unacceptable browser refreshing, stopping music applications, closing games, and the list go on.

Games: It might not be HTC fault but as a customer I have paid for a lot of high end games that I can not play with this phone. I know the phone has the hardware to run the games. you need to work closer with the game developers to adapt the game to the phone. Ex, GTA 3 runs but I am having issues to save the game, exit, or pause.

Camera: I should be able to decide the quality of the picture detail even if that means slower shutter speed.

Front Facing Camera low lighting exposure is too low. Next to an iPhone in medium dark light conditions my phone performance is terrible. The iPhone looks great.

HTC Live weather wallpaper makes my phone to randomly reboot.

Picture Contact Resolution from G Plus or Phone is unacceptable.

WIFi issues already acknowledge by HTC

AT&T Network radio seems to hop between towers higher frequency than normal.

2G, 3g, 4g network toggle. During football games or big events, it is easier to switch between networks to be able to make phone calls or send text messages. I have not doubt 4G battery life on the HTC phone is improved but it is not as great as 3G or 2g networks.

Some memory lagging

SMS notifiaction issues already acknowledge by HTC

Gmail Push not working properly.

Google Voice is not installing correctly.

I know some the issues mentioned here are not under HTC control but as a customer I don't care. I have invested money on buying top end games and it is easier for me to find another phone that it is compatible with those games. I should not be the one hassling with the game developers.

Please take into account that I do not have any obligation to write you any complaints and my return window is in 23 days.

I love the phone design but the more I dig the more I keep falling out of love with the phone.

Could you please offer a clear direction if any software upgrade would be offered to improve your product and when?

Thanks.

This is NOT EXCLUSIVE TO HTC. My nexus does the same thing and it ONLY does it under certain circumstances where the phone is under a heavy RAM/processing load.

1. It is the developers fault, not HTCs, that games are not compatible with the S4 yet. That is an issue that will be addressed as the chipset propagates through the market.

2. Picture contact resolution is 100% Google's issue. The same problem cropped up on the galaxy nexus.

3. The redirect, Gmail, and voice issues are 100% on Google.

To be blunt, these issues are ALL related to the fact the one x has a new chipset, and is a new handset. They will be fixed.

Someone run this command from an adb shell and tell me what you see:

Code:
cat /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree

I'll bet HTC just tweaked the hell out of the lmk module to make the phone run fast. If so, it's easy to fix :)

I heard excuses and wait. This is the top HTC phone. I am ok with some issues but there are too many to overlook.
1. Agree but launching and marketing a top end product HTC should have done a better effort. HTC S4 were to coming. It is about integration and collaboration partners. How long do I need to wait? I cant play any of the good games and it is a long list.
2. I have use CM9 and the contact pictures are gorgeous. No excuse.
3. I have use Gmail and Gvoice with other phones no problem.

I hope they get fixed before my return window..

1. Again, it is not HTCs responsibility to do the developers job for them.

2. It is Google's fault. Ics is set up, as a default, to ONLY offer the lowest resolution pictures for Gmail contacts.

3. Still Google's fault. The app obviously has not been updated for the one x. That is Google's problem, not htcs.
