Why is messenger no longer sending gifs?

When I purchased the s9+ I was about to send gifs in messenger, as of a few weeks ago I no longer can. Is this a known problem?

Are you sure the ones you're trying to send are small enough? (The carrier puts a limit on the size of an MMS.)

I believe there was an upgrade to messenger. I also noticed all of sudden that I can no longer send a gif file and assumed it was after the upgrade. This stinks. First the individual notification sounds were taken away with Oreo and now this.
