Why is my Moto E5 Play pausing and changing volume on its own?

Recently I got a Moto E5 Play to replace my J3 Prime, and almost as soon as I started using it I had the issue of it constantly pausing any running media and constantly moving the audio volume up and down on its own. I've been looking around for a fix because I heard this might be a feature rather than a defect because of the phones built in proximity sensor.

Does this only happen when headphones are plugged in, or even without them?
