Why is my phone screen tinted brown?

My note 5 all of a sudden had a brown tint to the screen. It is not a hardware problem because it is in screen shots that I took and only appears when the phone is in portrait mode.

If the screenshot is taken from the phone itself it wouldn't show up if it was a screen issue.

If you enter into safe mode, does the 'brown tint' show up there as well? What about when you boot into recovery mode or during the Samsung logo? If the tint is there on the latter, it's definitely a hardware problem with your screen. Either a loose cable, defective OLED panel, damaged video driver...

There's 2 ways to check for hardware failure:

1. Enter recovery and wipe cache partition.
2. If it still persists, then do a full factory reset.

If its a hardware issue, which SpookDroid and myself, think it probably is, then it will continue to occur after one or both of the above options.

I rebooted in safe mode and the problem was gone. I then rebooted into normal mode and the tint is gone. Thank you

In that case it was an app or setting that was causing it. I hope the reboot and safe mode 'cleared' whatever process was acting up if it was random, but if it happens again, I'd try to pinpoint which apps you have installed that might interfere with display properties, like battery savers, 'night mode' viewers, etc.

You weren't by chance using an app that blocks blue light emission to protect your eyes were you? Those apps block at least a portion of the blue light spectrum giving the screen a reddish-brown look.
