I have a galaxy s8. My internet download speed is 45 to 55 on Google WiFi. My husband is 233, kiddo is 192. I am not tech savvy at all and I know this is fixable. I've tried to switch from 2.4 to 5ghz, but I cannot figure it out. Everything online is written back in 2016 or 2018 outdated instructions. I have no malware, I have less apps installed than most. My phone tests fast when I use mobile data. I feel like it isn't the phone if mobile data is fast. My husband feels like the wifi isn't the issue since he connects to it at a fast speed. I've read that the router my have flagged may phone and that's why it's so slow? I don't want to buy another phone to fix this.

Thank you for the guidelink. I have done everything on that list already that is applicable. I'm unable to find any option in my phone that allows me to change from 2.4 to 5 gigahertz, but I know that my phone supports it so I'm not sure how to find that option.

Are you saying that the capability of my phone being on 5 GHz would stem from something on the router? I have several devices that are connected to our router via five gigahertz.
What I'm saying on these newer phones and updates they took the ability in wifi settings to switch between 2.4 and 5 so if your router had both options it will show on your network list and you have to choose which to connect.

Google WiFi app does not allow you to manually change between 2.4 and 5GHz bands. It automatically assigns a device to whatever itself. I have 3 Google WiFi routers in a mesh network. I cannot connect devices to it that requires 2.4GHz band only like smart plugs from China. I have to connect those to my Netherlands router that has each band separately listed.

I think I've found the answers I need here, is there a way to close this thread?

Did it work? Which answer helped? It'd be helpful for others to know as well.

Do you have the 1st gen Google Wifi, or the more recent Nest Wifi? I have the 1st gen Wifi, and I found that the quality of the ethernet cable connecting the modem to the main wifi unit can make a difference in general. The Google Wifi package came with a Cat5 cable, and when I changed this to a Cat6 cable, speeds improved universally by about 50-60%. (This wouldn't explain why you were experiencing differential speeds, but it might still be helpful for you to know overall.)
