Why is the Moto X such troll-bait?

I think both sides of the equation are to blame. Like someone else mentioned previously, people who feed the trolls are every bit as bad as the trolls themselves (I myself am guilty). I personally own a Nexus 5 but if anyone asks what phone I would recommend to them, I say Moto X. My Mom bought a Moto X just after Thanksgiving and she loves it. I love it too. I have had to help her with a ton of stuff because it's her first smartphone, and the thing is awesome. Perfect size, smooth, clean, and it functions how I would expect a device to function. I think the people who rely solely on what they read on paper are missing out tremendously, but that's up to them.

Trying to call people out by sarcastically accusing them of being "spec-whores" right off the bat does nothing but create hostility. If you own a Moto X, you should feel very lucky. And ignore anyone who starts down the path of comparing specs. I wish we were all a little more open minded and slow to anger when discussing phones. It could make for some awesome conversation.

Why trolling? Because internet, really. It's not just phones, it's everywhere on the web...pretty much anywhere people can sound off about anything. There is always going to be some contingent of those who outright troll or at the very least damn with faint praise.

But consider it flattery. Turns out the Moto X is a better device than specs suggested, so of course it's a target. If it was an "also-ran" no one would care.

See how reasonable a discussion can be if we keep the troll bashing and other unnecessary comments at the road side?

End of the day its great to share each of our experiences especially with devices we own or have owned. It helps those who come along looking to purchase in the future. Same time we have to keep in check that just because we had a bad personal experience with a device doesn't mean the same is happening to everyone across the board. So I guess what I'm saying is share your thoughts and experiences but keep in mind your comments speak volumes to others so be thoughtful and smart in your choice of comments to give others an honest fair shot at forming their own opinion of a device.

IMO, the X is a lot like the One. It received critical acclaim inside the narrow echo chamber of this site and other tech blogs but was a complete dud in the market place. This lends itself to attacks from the owners of more popular phones and they bolster their arguments with sales figures. For every tech blog or internet forum poster that slags the S4 for being plastic there are millions of consumers who could care less.

FWIW, I sold my S4 in favor of my N5 and One.

Agreed and very well said. Thank you. :)

I don't own a Moto X but of the two people at work that have one have said it's by far the best phone they've ever owned. They aren't spec junkies, they aren't gadget freaks, just normal people who have both owned iphones, android and blackberry in the past and say the Moto X is head and shoulders above the rest.

Ppeople have been conditioned to think that specs are what makes a phone great. They're comfortable in their spec box and don't want to step out of it. The X challenges that and makes them uncomfortable so they lash out. They don't want to see other companies following Moto's lead of making it about the experience instead of the numbers because they're comfortable looking at numbers.
And its hard to brag to your friends that the X has more "touchlessness" than their phone. People wanna brag so they need MOAR CORES to do that.

Some people can't seem to separate their value as a human being from the value of their toys, be they phones, computers, cameras, motorcycles, etc......

I don't know why people identify so closely with an object or a brand, but some people just do. I suspect there are self-esteem issues involved.

Smartphone makers spend lots of $ researching what consumers are looking for and tailor their products to match consumer demand. That is why there are so many different options. There isn't such a phone that will appeal to all users. I started off as an Android user, then switched to the iPhone and then back to Android. I'm not loyal to anyone brand because when I'm in need of a new phone, I look at all platforms and decide which is best for me at the time. I've used, HTC, Motorola, LG, Apple & Samsung, as they all offer something unique from other manufacturers. Pick the right phone for you, but making the right choice should be based on what you're looking for spec wise, software wise, size, ergonomics and price. I love Apple products as I own a MacBook Pro, iMac, iPod nano. I pretty much love all tech products and choose one that feels right to me. That's the beauty of having companies competing for your business, you end up as the winner when you choose something that you love.

Android OEMs have been in a (hardware) spec race since the beginning.

With the Moto X, Motorola has essentially gone against the status quo.

You don't need the highest of the high-end of specs to have a great Android experience. That way of thinking hasn't caught on with the average Android fan.

Yep someone had to! Except I'm not looking to start any arguments though :D
I just curious to hear some opinions. I can understand the Moto X performing "as good" as the other high spec phones out there, or close to it, but better? What do you think?
LG G2

I just got a Nexus 7 (2013) and the Moto X is noticeably smoother. Not saying the Nexus 7 has lag, (I don't think any flagship device has any real discernable amount of lag), but its not as smooth in some areas as the X.

This was my FAVORITE post in this thread! Reading it, and looking at the giant Ferrari logo was priceless! :D

Wait...you're a mod, now? God save us all, lol. /sarcasm

I have owned just about every phone there is or was and I can honestly say that the moto x is one of the best if not the best. My wife did not like it and went back to her iPhone 5 but did admit it was undoubtedly faster at everything she asked it to do and said if she liked android this would be her phone lol so it's all about personal choice....

It's getting to the point where I need to avoid all comments on any article concerning this phone.
Why is there such a huge core of people who don't simply love their own phone, but instead have to seek out any chance to get in and say that a price drop is too late, specs aren't what they want to see on paper, it's not the world's best camera, etc.

If you are one of these people, feel free to chime in. Let us all know how many phones you are currently haunting the forums and articles of. Tell us why this phone, seemingly above all others, is deserving of all the attention.

This really has nothing to do with people on forums, etc., but I work in a major medical center with a bunch of doctors who ALL have iPhones. I swear, every single one of them has gone Apple in the last year or so, even the ones who professed to like Android. What's really interesting to me is how many of them are fascinated with my X. They always want to look at it, see the display, etc., and they always tell me they love the size of it and the way it feels in their hands. Doctors want phones that fit in their pockets, and something like an S4 doesn't fit, which was one of their major reasons for the great migration to the smaller iPhones. Once they see how fast the X is and what great reception I get, even in the elevator, not to mention hearing me rave about the battery life on this phone - it won't surprise me to see some of these guys with an X in their hands the next time they upgrade.
