Why isn't my PC recognizing my Samsung Galaxy S5 through the USB?

Try this:

If you Samsung galaxy S5 is not showing a USB connection type , such as MTP-Media Device or PTP-Camera. Then follow these steps. Most people are complaining that no connection type appears when the device is connected. When they pull the notification tab down to check, nothing appears, only the notification sound

>Enter Dialer

>*#0808#

>Where you see USB settings, check the MTP button and click Ok

Hello. I am having the same problem. Can you please clarify it for me, should I dial the *#0808#. I tried that and it just says that call can not be completed.
Will appreciate any help, as my s5 just stopped connecting to the PC saying usb devise in not recognized. Tried different computers and different cords. VZ tech support wants me to do a hard reset or replace my phone, which I am trying to avoid.
Thanks in advance.
Alex.

I entered the code, no problem, the USB settings screen came up, but still not working. Tried it a couple of times, even rebooting. Still doesn't work.

You must have been using a cable that only allows you to charge your phone and not for data. Jijiji:p:p

OMG, you are brilliant...... I didn't know the charger cable wouldn't work.... I found the cable from my old RAZR and plugged it in and voila... the PC sees the phone. Thank you!!!

Please clarify the enter *#0808# into the dialer. If i open the phone like to make a call and enter this nothing happens. if I hit send the number rings and I get a msg that the call cannot be connected. What am I doing wrong?

After downloading Windows 10, the USB connection for my Samsung S5 quit working.
For some reason I was stuck thinking I needed the phone to connect as a USB 3.0 Media Device, or as the MTP.
I never tried the Camera (PTP) until today.
It worked! Windows 10 still does not recognize the connection, but when I selected the PTP mode, the images were located on my phone, and started downloading instantly. Puzzle solved for photo transfer... now how to get it to again recognize the other connection settings. Previous Windows version gave me no trouble.
Good luck all.

Bullsh!t. I opened up my phone, dialed *#0808#, nothing happens. I hit "send" to make the call, it can't be completed as dialed. Fvck you.

Don't propose a BS solution you made up in your psycho head. Real people are trying to solve a problem.

I had this same problem after upgrading to Windows 10. I tried the steps at the following link, and they solved my problem. Win10 would recognize neither my S5 nor my Dell 7840 tablet-until I enabled Developer Mode and then USB debugging:

EDIT: I cannot post a link because I have less than 10 posts. In any event, I googled "windows 10 does not recognize samsung galaxy s5" and the link at solvemix.com was the first that appeared.

I've read through this whole thread and am completely lost. I know Windows PCs pretty well. Android systems not so much. You talk about entering a special character sequence into the "dialer?" Do you mean act like I am calling that number? 'Cause I tried it and all I got was Verizon saying I couldn't complete the call.

Early on, I pulled the notifications down. One said USB charging - tap for other USB uses (or words to that affect). One choice said to transfer images and another said transfer media (whatever the heck that means)! I want to transfer all kinds of things - photo, documents, music, playlists, videos, etc. I've tried both choices however by repeatedly plugging and unplugging. On one, PC says Unknown Device; on the other it's just ignored!

Earlier, I saw something about a Kies driver - I have no idea at all what that means! Does anyone know to help a newbie (I'll call myself for the moment). I've been transferring all kinds of files for years.

BTW, I have a Samsung Note5 with Verizon running Android ver 6.0.1 and the GO launcher. I upgraded from a Note3 last year and I'm wondering if that was a big mistake.

Sorry

That was the solution. Plugged in the charger cable, clicked on the "charging" notification, and then the options came up. Chose "file transfer", and viola! Back to normal. Using a Verizon Galaxy S5, locked to the carrier, of course. Problem solved.

Thanks so much bro , you dont know how much this helped. i had to use my old phone for music because my new S5 wouldnt be able to connect to my Laptop ro put music on it. Thanks a ton Man , your a real one .

I just ran into the problem last night (Aug 21, 2016) at a friend's house. I wanted some files, but neither of us had a USB drive. I had my data cable with me, so I just thought "Why not, I will just plug my phone in and toss the files on the SD card." but his computer would only show my phone as a phone in My Computer. It wouldn't let me explore it or browse files. We were pressed for time, so i didn't play much. I just assumed there was some driver issue that wasn't setup on his PC and we just left it.

Today (Aug 21, 2016) I went to backup all the pictures off my phone in the way I have done a hundred times before, using the data transfer cable plugged into a USB port on my desktop. I got the same result as I did at my friend's house. It brought up my phone in windows explorer, but wouldn't let me explore the files. It would just give an error and a blank screen when it was double clicked.

I tried the original solution in this thread of dialing #0808#, but my phone really dialed it and I got a generic Verizon call canned be completed. My phone must me somewhat locked down by Verizon (no surprise). So I went and manually explored the settings looking for an option that a recent system update might've changed. No luck. I finally noticed I had a notification that my phone was USB charging and to tap it for more info. I pulled down the notifications, tapped the USB charging notification and viola! I had an option to change it to transfer files among a few other options.

My guess is that a recent update changed it. I haven't transferred files via cable in a while, so it is very possible that it was changed some time ago and I just now noticed.

Just felt it was my civic duty to chime in and document my problem / solution here too since I had an account. Thanks!

(My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S5 running system version G900VVRU2DPF4 as of Jun 25, 2016)
