Why won't my HTC One M8 show up and sync on my PC?

I purchased an HTC One M8, and downloaded the HTC Sync Manager, and when I connect the HTC to my PC, which runs Windows 8.1, it shows "no phone connected" no matter where I look, it just won't show up. Anyone have any suggestions?

Welcome to Android Central! Are you using the original USB cable that came with the phone? When you connect, do you see a USB connection notification appear in the notification bar on the phone? If so, swipe down, tap the notification and make sure MTP is selected.
