Will google really wait till October 2018 to replace the screen?

is that fact or opinion?

Stating what I've observed and experienced personally and for what I know from other owners from our volunteer team here, as well other members. I had an early date with very little blue and a recent one that I own and compared them side by side.

ok great. I just don't know what to do the screen on this phone looks absolutely horrible. if they allow me to check manufacture dates at Verizon that's what I'm going to do and I'm just going to try to get something built after December 1st

I have a mid-November build date, perfect screen, no grain, imperceptible blue shift, no black smearing ... the best screen I have ever seen on a phone. Watching YouTube in HD is an absolutely wonderful sight. There might be a few bad apples, but they make the loudest noises on forums, they have for 2 decades and it won't change. Buy the phone, there is not a better one on the market period.

This is very encouraging. I'm going to switch mine out. I'm still within the two week period but my build date is October.

No direct correlation between blue shift and date...I have seen plenty of units built prior to that date with no issue. There could be a higher number of early units with more shift if they tightened up QC, but we would still be guessing.
This nonsense about the color shift is only noticible if you go out of your way to reproduce it. In day to day use it is not existant. Anybody that can't deal with this phone because of the color shift is only focused on an idea of hardware excellence. The best hardware out there is probably the iPhone x and the note 8. I rather have a pixel any day but having choices is a great thing.

I like blue shift. My V20 has a setting to filter some of the blue. I would never use it.

If you were joking, sorry for the reply. If not, it's not the same thing. The V20 has an LCD screen. Those don't have the blue shift effect being discussed here. In general, OLED screens have darker blacks, whiter whites, more vivid colors, but on the down side have a blue shift when seen from an angle. Personally, my issues with the XL 2 have nothing to do with that, although numerous others on this thread do.

I took a punt on another one (this time black)

Blue shift still there but far less pronounced and I am ok with it. Bad news though is 24 hours in I am experiencing screen flash when switching on and off!

What's screen flash?

Good article on the Pixel 2 screen "issues"

https://android.gadgethacks.com/news/5-things-we-learned-from-pixel-2-xl-poled-debacle-0180790/

I'll take the better color rendition. I'll take the polarizing filter. The burn in is most likely image retention. All in the article.

All screens have a polarising filter - but none of them (that I've seen) have had colour shifting to the extent the Pixel 2 XL has. Without a polarising filter, you won't see screens out in day light with polarised sunglasses. Samsung have polarising filters on their screens and don't have close to the shift that the P2XL has.

And I disagree with the article where it says sRGB was the right thing to do - I don't believe it was. I'm guessing if I were to take the P2XL screen and show it to the general public side by side with the Note 8 screen, I'd wager the vast majority would prefer the punchier colours of the Note 8.

Having sRGB is great, but imo, it should be an option in the display settings for people to turn on for those who really care about having 'accurate' colours - not turned on by default. Yes it's less accurate, but I believe it's more aesthetically pleasing to most consumers.

People only notice it because they're going out of their way to notice flaws. A phone is a personal device and you look at your phone straight on for personal use. I don't know many people that look at their phone from the side or constantly have other viewers looking at their phone. If it really bothers people you have to get another phone.

Yeah I'm fairly certain that Google will continue to use LG's OLED displays next year, what I'm not confident in is LG drastically improving their screen tech by next year. It took Samsung years to get their screens where they are now, and the LG OLED to me looks like what the Samsung Galaxy S4 displays were like with those issues. So I'm not really keen on having a 3 or so year wait for LG's screen tech to be equivalent to Samsung's 2017 screens. Maybe LG can speed up the quality improvements.

Guess we'll see how much it's improved (if at all) with the LG G7 and the LG V40 prior to the Pixel 3 release.

Honestly, I'd rather they use a 120hz LCD display like on the Razer phone. That screen looks amazing.

The Pixel 2 XL phone display is in a different world entirely from the s4 screens. I came from the Note 4 and there is simply no comparison whatsoever. The Pixel 2 XL screen is very very good. Mine has none of the issues bandied around here, in fact it had less color shift or image darkening than the Essential it sat right next to. I have taken mine to the Verizon store and the blue shift on the demo phone is at least 4 times worse than my phone. I never even notice it, and the colors are beautiful just on boosted. I think the changes in 4.1 and probably better factory calibration (which Google did admit to) have completely removed the issue. The screen is great. Yes the Note 8 display is better but only slightly.

Some people just want the garish cartoony colors of Samsung and in my opinion they should go get a samsung phone and stop ******** about it here

True but I would return it if it was as bad as the demo unit at Verizon as well. I do think they have done a lot of stealth fixes.

You clearly didn't read the article nor watch the video

It is better than the Galaxy S4 screen. What I meant was these issues we're seeing is what we saw back on the Galaxy S4 - black smearing etc. Samsung seem to have fixed these issues and are now quite mature in their AMOLED displays, but LG is playing catchup. The issues the P2XL's OLED display has are similar to the issues the Galaxy S4 had.

Maybe I got a dud device because my build date is Oct 31 and has pretty bad blue shift, very noticeable black smear and screen grain. The Note 8 I had just a little while ago I'd say definitely had a better screen imo by a pretty big gap.

Still love the P2XL, still think it's an awesome phone, just hope that Google don't make the same mistake in 2018 with the P3XL.

I don't know why you keep saying that. Samsung phones have multiple colour profiles, so if you really dislike the 'cartoony' colours, you can change it to sRGB if you want. Add to that, they even have RGB colour sliders so you can really adjust the saturation level to your liking.

The screen has been a major point of discussion in tech news and forums. If you dislike the discussion about the screen - you don't have to participate.

I think Google missed the mark with whatever colour profile they targeted. 'Accurate' and 'great' aren't necessarily the same thing. It's a sub-par screen compared to other flagships on the market (Note 8/Galaxy S8/iPhone X).

Black smearing and grain are unnaceptable. Not sure how widespread of an issue it is.

As far as colors if you don't want the cartoon-level of the most vibrant Samsung setting then what exactly are you missing? I keep my phone on natural and the colors are fantastic. I can respect the saturated level as well for others. What exactly is missing color-wise?
