Will I be able to update to Android 2.3 if I root, recover, and ROM?

I'm a brand new Android user and I'm running the Optimus S with Android 2.2.
I have been reading a lot about changing ROMs and I see there is a substantial benefit to doing so. But, I have read that Android 2.3 will soon be available as an update from LG for my phone. I was wondering if completing the root, recovery, ROM procedure would interfere with the Android 2.3 update and if these ROMS were compatible with 2.3.

considering when the first OTA update was released (that included swype, etc), you had to have stock recovery to accept it, i'm guessing not.
while i'm itching to get gingerbread on here, i think i may end up waiting for a confirmed root method before updating

There is always a chance that the current root will not work once Gingerbread OTA is released. In fact it's possible, but unlikely, that Gingerbread on the Optimus won't be able to rooted. Much safer IMO, if you root now and get gingerbread when the new roms by KSmith/Breezy and Nick are released. Don't think you have to worry about the latter happening at all.

Never update from any OTA updates even if it's gingerbread because it will UNROOT your phone! Best option to do is wait until a rom developer releases a gingerbread rom, otherwise you might have to wait at least several weeks even a month for a reroot for the new update.

you can apply any sprint update that comes out just fully revert back to stock using the instructions in the sticky and make sure to follow the step about recovery.

Now about root we won't have root for a while after 2.3 comes out because we'll have to find a new exploit.

Just letting yu guys know I'm gonna go ahea and do it.... This battery usageon the stock setup is killing me. So I'm gonna Root and ROM and the revert to stock for the update when the new root exploits are ready...
