Will is be worth it if you already own a Droid?

I can not wait for a full review of the phone....If it truly is coming out on the 12th where is the info

Has anyone actually found out if they snuck a sim card slot for future LTE expansion on the verizon network?

That's the only thing holding me back right now, because if it has the option for future use then why not.

Well the fact is Motorola didn't screw everyone over like RIM did with the storm 1 since it pretty much failed sooo bad and there wasn't even a apology from RIM or verizon offering some sort of compensation. Ok seriously... daily batt pulls on a retail firmware riiiiiiiiiiiight thats the way to win customers. "lets not include wifi, the correct ram, and everything else so we can save money"

Moto pretty much released a decent phone to start with and is pretty much pulling off the yearly hardware updates like apple does, but its somewhat necessary from the expanding options on the android OS.

No offense, but if people expected an apology from a corporation AND compensation, they deserved a ****ty phone like the Storm1. Prime example is Apple. Are they apologizing for being complete idiots and including a single-antennae design? Hell no! They're just pointing out flaws in everyone elses phones, INCLUDING the Android phones. To expect compensation when the only compensation they could make was a better phone (what else could RIM have really done) in today's day and age is just asinine. What do you mean the correct RAM? The Storm1 was spec'd the same as the rest of it's generation excluding the Tour, who tripped and fell in between two generations.

Regardless, it's true that Moto created a good phone. However, the Droid Eris is still getting updates. It's been out how long? A lot longer than the Droid, who got to see 2.1 and hopefully (officially) 2.2...soon? Who knows? This lifespan seems criminally short, and much like the Storm1. I don't really care whether my phone was a great phone, I want continuous support. The iPhone 3G was supported right up until 4.0. Wtf? Is it that hard for other companies to make phones that will last (and stay relatively good enough to run the software) for more than a year?

Apparently. RIM, Moto, and HTC are all companies that seem chronically incapable of making phones that have a shelf lifetime of more than 7 months.

Now here comes the D2 offering me a 1GHz chip, 512 RAM, great GPU, and that awesome build of the D1 that I love, but with a much improved keyboard. Perfect. The form of the D1 and D2 is just too sleek and efficient to improve, so I'm confident there won't be another phone that excites me in the next year. After my one year contract is up, I'll consider upgrading to an LTE phone but until then the D2 is exactly what I want - rock solid and fast with a great keyboard.

If the keyboard is a significant improvement over ther the D1 that could be a major factor for some. One of the reasons that I shied away from the D1 was the, IMO, very poor physical keyboard. The keys were so flush that I could never get any sense of actually pressing them down. I have the Incredible and while I've gotten used to the onscreen keyboard, because of screen washout, texting in bright outdoor light is very difficult. I looked at the LG Ally but it's KB is not well layed out and small and the phone itself is lower tier. If the speed and performance is there, a solid physical KB could sway me towards a D2.

I own both the Droid X and Droid and love both. I will upgrade to the Droid2 as a everyday/all day carry.

guys settle down and this thread is about the Droid, please keep it on topic.

edit: if this continues the thread will be locked and infractions may be handed out

Seriously.

After reading the user-manual for this device, I am seriously unimpressed.

It really doesn't offer anything that the Droid can't.

And quit calling it the Droid 1 lol
Its the DROID. Just Droid lol

as people have stated the droid 2 is more designed for people who didn't/werent able to get the original droid and have the specs be comparable to the higher end phones. the droid 2 seems more of a lacking attempt on Motorola's part to milk the Droid name for all they can. Motorola seems to be just holding off on innovating devices until the release of their 2 ghz processor phone which makes sense in a business standpoint but it is lame on a consumer standpoint. idk, the x and the droid 2 are comparable phones to what is high end at this time but just not anything that makes jaws drop like the original droid did.

A lot of people are saying this phone is milking the first droid which in a sense is true. However there are still alot of people who didn't get the original droid some passed. Like me i passed on the original droid till i learned a little more about the line. I stupidly opted for the eris and soon regretted it. The droid 2 is an oportunity for those who did not get the original droid but with a faster processed and extra goodies. I think its a good buy for anyone who did not get the first droid. If you did wait till christmas time. Me i got the x and couldn't be happier.

To me everything unique about the d1 has been stripped open bootloader, plain android. Don't much care for the blur not blur. I would rather stick with the og Droid just because I know it will be like the n1 and g1 after they stop supporting it their will still be a community behind it keeping it current. Without the need to constantly upgrade due to a locked bootloader keeping the community from putting gingerbread on my device or even what comes afterwards.

the only way i will end up with a droid 2 instead of a droid 1 is if Asurion decides that the droid 2 is the comparable replacement now that the droid 1 is no longer in production. And then my droid has a serious accident. knock on wood! I'd rather keep my droid 1, it has to much freedom.

I will get the D2. For those that want this type phone and have not switched to Android yet, it is a great place to go.

Yes I'm updating (have an upgrade available Aug 8) but will keep the original Droid to use over Wifi. Both devices are awesome and I can't part with my original Droid until I find a good Android phone running stock Android.

Specs aren't everything and just because the processor speed is not as fast as say the DI or the Evo does not mean that the performance will be (significantly) less.

The physical keyboard and superior build quality (real metal) alone will attract a lot of people who passed on the other super phones out there.

i hoped for somthing bigger and better, not gonna lie. but this is still a solid device aside from the locked boot loader which is a huge hit from motorola. it is really nice but it seems more for the people who wanted a droid 1 but didn't get one, as stated earlier by sombody else.

It's only a matter of time before they find a way around the locked boot loader. I wouldn't worry about it. SO you'll have to wait a few months before playing with custom roms...

I still have my bb (a bold). I looked at the X but it was a little big and I didnt like the lack of keyboard. I am seriously considering a droid 2 when it comes out.

The improved keyboard is definitely a nice feather in the D2's cap.

I think another reason is that flashing custom ROMs extends the useful life of phones, which takes money out of Moto's pockets. They've already decided the Droid has hit the end of its life and would anyone be shocked if Froyo is the last update? Meanwhile, there are plenty of Droid owners saying they're OK with passing on the new phones because they can just slap on community ROMs with all the latest features, including Gingerbread when it comes in all likelihood.

In short, hardware companies like to hold back features and make past products obsolete so we'll buy their newest release. Custom ROMs combat that practice and they don't like it.

That's part of it but I think it has more to do with the support calls they get. Google gave out Droids to some developers and I think that was arranged in advance and thus Moto left the boot loader unlocked. Now the N1 is the de facto dev phone and they probably feel no need, plus the fact that it does not have stock Android which would make it less attractive as a dev phone.

Oh and the description make the Droid EOL is Verizon's nit Motorola's and you will notice that the Milestone (GSM Droid) is still going strong on other carriers.

The Droid/Milestone still has a lot of life in it, it's just not a top tier phone anymore. Droid 2 is the next incarnation of the device and I am sure that it will be a worthy successor despite a few drawbacks.

im ordering by phone on release day. im hoping there are no issues with stock like the dinx and dx.
