Will is be worth it if you already own a Droid?

Is the Droid 2 slated to get Gingerbread? If so, that would be a good reason to upgrade. But to be honest, the original Proud is a monster phone. I wish that I had gotten that a ling time ago instead if going with the iPhone late last year. I ended up hitting the cycle of the iPhone 3GS, Palm Pre, Hero, and Tour before finally landing with the EVO. If I had gotten the Droid in the beginning, I wouldn't have made all if those changes and would have saved a lot if time and money. I am a big fan of the Droid as you can tell. It was an underwater device that was secretly the best phone on the market when it was released.

yeah same here. i had the iphone 3g, went to the tour ( still kinda miffed bout the name change) and then to a droid. in regards to upgrading i agree with the other previous statement about just really increasing the ram/internal storage. my phone runs fine and its stock everything. obviously i dont know much bout rooting an overclocking and being able to do things with it that would warrant needing more ram, but i mean it does make or break it for me. maybe the ability to have gingerbread, but im sure i can wait till someone finds a way to get rooted on there. then ill start messing round with it :p

Motorola Droid 2 will be a waist of money. Only worth it to people who are not into the best features. 5MP camera is a joke same as the first, the Flash is not functionally comparative to the Droid INC. New android devices need 1Ghz min, front facing camera, 8MP camera with dial LED flash similar to HTC phones not the Motorola dual flash there’s is handicapped with that plastic shield over it. In addition, this Droid 2 does not have anything interesting. Just a faster version of the new one. So who wants to upgrade to the Droid 2 instead of something else....only worth it for people who absolutely need a keyboard and don’t care about anything else. This is IMHO. Anyone care to state other reasons why this phone would be worth buying besides what I had mentioned?

You might want to educate yourself on the actual significance of megapixels on cellphones before using it as the basis of an argument. Matter of fact, I'll save you the trouble: They don't matter. 3,5,8,12. Doesn't matter if the lens and sensor are crap. Manufactures just ramp up the number for marketing purposes. Assuming the Droid 2's cam performs at, or at least around the Droid X, then it will be superior to the Droid Incredible. Not necessarily my opinion, but in the opinion of major online outlets that I trust.

Other reasons to want it over a Droid 1 - more internal storage which means you don't have to worry about cleaning your cache frequently. More RAM, 45 nm chips that lead to longer battery life, a FM radio, a noise cancellation mic, and a keyboard that you actually want to use.

If you already have an original Droid, of course this phone isn't different enough to shell out $$ for. However contrary to what most Droid owners seem to believe, not everyone has a D1 right now and many passed on it due to its lack of a 1GHz processor and significant RAM upgrade from what was available on the market last year.

I waited for the Nexus One and love it, but I'm very interested in the D2 (as well as the Samsung Epic) because I want my N1 specs but with a great keyboard. I absolutely love the build of the D1 except for the poorly laid out keyboard and d-pad, so I'm excited to see they kept the form but improved the keyboard for the D2.

Given that I love the build of the D1, I did try it for about a week in March but it was just too sluggish compared to the N1. Yes, I overclocked and tried every ROM imaginable on the D1 but it still couldn't compare to the everyday speed of use of the N1. At that point I decided I just can't buy a new phone unless it has 1 GHz and 512MB of RAM, since that's where operating lag seems to disappear.

Now here comes the D2 offering me a 1GHz chip, 512 RAM, great GPU, and that awesome build of the D1 that I love, but with a much improved keyboard. Perfect. The form of the D1 and D2 is just too sleek and efficient to improve, so I'm confident there won't be another phone that excites me in the next year. After my one year contract is up, I'll consider upgrading to an LTE phone but until then the D2 is exactly what I want - rock solid and fast with a great keyboard.

Front facing camera and HDMI? Don't care about those. I want the productivity functions of the phone, not the novelty of video calling or HDMI ports that I'll very, very, very rarely use.

I want the Droid 2 to be more than what The BB Storm 2 was for the BB Storm. Granted the Storm sucked and the Droid does not, but I still wish they would have made it a game changer like the original was. I have the HTC Incredible and am happy with the phone but when I hold the Droid you know you are holding a solid piece of hardware. If the Droid 2 is a sideways move or better I will probably make the switch. I am very interested to see if the camera is better even if it is 5MB. Oh well I will wait and see like everyone else... I am looking forward to this phone, and can not wait to hear more about it.

The Droid is the most popular Android device available. At its release, there were only 2 phones available with CPU's clocked at 1 gig, and neither were supported by the North American markets. To be honest, all of this is moot, since most customers are unaware, or could care less about processor speed. That type of thing only gets rap on websites like this.

Right, there were no 1GHz phones available but there were plenty on the horizon, just like how some geeks are waiting for the dual cores on the horizon this year.

Anyway, I was just trying to show one way that the Droid 2 appeals to some of us.

i hoped for somthing bigger and better, not gonna lie. but this is still a solid device aside from the locked boot loader which is a huge hit from motorola. it is really nice but it seems more for the people who wanted a droid 1 but didn't get one, as stated earlier by sombody else.

guys settle down a bit. discussion and debate is great. arguing and degrading people is not allowed here

I still have my bb (a bold). I looked at the X but it was a little big and I didnt like the lack of keyboard. I am seriously considering a droid 2 when it comes out.

They probably only locked it because of Wireless Tether, i really can't think of a legit reason to do so otherwise.

The majority of people will never notice a difference between 8 and 5 MP in a camera, and a front facing camera really isn't a necessity, a nice bonus (just like higher megapixels) but definitely not a necessity... just because the evo has these features doesn't mean it has to be the rule to go by.

my wife prefers her droid over the X because she like the physical keyboard, so I will be getting the droid 2 for her when it comes out. the faster processor is a big plus.

and BTW, for all you people who were talking trash about the storm 2 being named storm 2 and saying there will never be a droid 2 because how great it was...well...its coming :)

Are you sure they will be calling it the Droid 2..........the name could change at launch. Htc Incrdible is now the Droid Incredible. The could call it Droid Next. Droid 360, MD2, Draid Marathon, etc.....

they will not change the name. it is the "droid 2". they already have the branding for it it. google the leaked photos.

I don't know that this will be worth the upgrade from the droid. If the dx hadn't been released I probably would have saved my upgrade for the next super phone.

Has anyone actually found out if they snuck a sim card slot for future LTE expansion on the verizon network?

That's the only thing holding me back right now, because if it has the option for future use then why not.

Well the fact is Motorola didn't screw everyone over like RIM did with the storm 1 since it pretty much failed sooo bad and there wasn't even a apology from RIM or verizon offering some sort of compensation. Ok seriously... daily batt pulls on a retail firmware riiiiiiiiiiiight thats the way to win customers. "lets not include wifi, the correct ram, and everything else so we can save money"

Moto pretty much released a decent phone to start with and is pretty much pulling off the yearly hardware updates like apple does, but its somewhat necessary from the expanding options on the android OS.

Considering that is coming with 2.2, I don't think so. You can already tether without root.

I think the main reason is that there were a lot of people who rooted the droid (or attempted root) who shouldn't have, and it created Hell for their tech departments. (remember during 2.01, Droid Mod had a literal one click root process that did everything for you, and it was in the market). Motorola doesn't like it when their device are this "open" as most of their others are locked down. I'm pretty sure they were the main forces behind locking the bootloader, not big red (in this case)

I don't agree with it. I think rooting should be hard, and that if doing so, it SHOULD void your warranty,at least the part where I get a phone, no questions asked. (and there be an easy way to notice this). because it's not Motorola's fault if I destroy my device. That being said, if I want to take that risk, they shouldn't stop me.

I think another reason is that flashing custom ROMs extends the useful life of phones, which takes money out of Moto's pockets. They've already decided the Droid has hit the end of its life and would anyone be shocked if Froyo is the last update? Meanwhile, there are plenty of Droid owners saying they're OK with passing on the new phones because they can just slap on community ROMs with all the latest features, including Gingerbread when it comes in all likelihood.

In short, hardware companies like to hold back features and make past products obsolete so we'll buy their newest release. Custom ROMs combat that practice and they don't like it.
