So i understand that the free mobile hotspot is for a limited time only. What if I don't care for the hotspot and just want to tether my laptop via the usb cable? Has anyone heard whether or not this would cost anything after the mobile hotspot gets deactivated. Thanks.

If Verizon is anything like Sprint... yes they will want you to pay for wired tethering. To carries tethering is tethering, wifi or wired. And just like carries, developers will be developers and your Thunderbolt will get root and you'll most likely will be able to use both wifi and wired tethering for free.

Give it time and the developers will get it all working.

wired (via USB) tethering is possible using apps like Barnacle, PDANET or other apps similar in the app market Without paying the extra costs of the carrier (ie verizon)

however, once the hotspot is deactivated May 15th (i believe), i don't think you'll be able to draw internet connection From the TB to your Computer (just as i couldn't do this with my previous Evo without using a service like PDANet)

It will always cost to tether your phone. However, you can root and download a tether from the market to work.

What!?!? I use the wifi hotspot and wired tethering a lot. And its free!!! Most custom roms have it baked in now days.

Thanks guys. Already rooted, so i'll just have to see which is the best app in two months.

In the market there's an app called "FreeTether" it's for rooted devices. Give it a shot.

I have used pdanet with my incredible and droid x unrooted to tether via usb and it is free. technically i dont think you're suppose to do this as vzw charges a tether fee but i've not had any problems with it. i dont see why this would not work with tbolt but i only used hte hotspot on the t bolt, not usb.
