My students were writing a school-rule essay, and some argued that we needed to change the rule banning cell phones on the campus. I told them there was no longer such a ban, that cell phones were allowed but you couldn't use them in class. I added that there was no way you could argue to use them in class so chose another subject. That afternoon I read an article from the head of the American Association of School Administrators, and he was saying that while he is limited in what he can do with his smartphone, he can't go anywhere without it. He compared smartphones to when PCs started popping up in school and then all the laptops. Technology gets smaller and smaller yet does more and more. His message was that smartphones are tools, and if we aren't using them to enhance our students' learning, then we are leaving the kids behind. Well, I'm behind and am in need of catching up.
