Wireless Tethering for Root Users

I also have pre 9 installed (not from the market). I am able to connect to my sons hero and it works fine, but no go on my laptop or my wife's epic. Her epic won't even pick up the ssid of my phone. Not sure what can be wrong. I tried installing different versions but that was no good either. Anyone have any idea why I can connect to the hero and nothing else?

i really dont know. but ive heard pre-11 works better.

it could also be the rom or the kernel messes it up or something. ill do a lil research and get back to you. because i also need to try and get wireless tether working. gonna test mine out and get back to you

What other versions have you tried? Pre8, Pre9 and Pre11 can all potentially work for the Epic. What ROM are you on? If stock and not deodexed, try the MobileAP from the I9000 (mentioned in this thread).

I don't know what deoxeded or whatever means. But currently I'm running stock & I am using MobileAP. But whenever I don't need wireless tether I have ASOP Universal ROM or Wisdom ROM. I change it constantly but its always between those two. I'm trying to tether to an iPod Touch. What settings should I have wireless tether on? I really don't understand all those options.

not sure how possible this is right now b/c everything ive come across says that the epic will only tether with wifi tether in ad hoc mode, no infrastructure mode which is what almost everything read. Ad hoc is recognized as a computer to computer and most devices ive ever used(psp...etc) will only see a infrastructure network(which is what routers put out)

edit: im using pre 11 and still ad hoc

The app "Wireless Tether" does not support infrastructure mode. If that is what you want (to connect, say, an iPod Touch) you need the MobileAP from the I9000, which does support infrastructure mode.

I downloaded this couple days ago from the Google site like it said - Pre11 was not listed so i got the most newest one--
I deleted my old Wireless Tether and installed the newest one ---
first time i tried it worked great --- the next day i got the same thing i was getting before "" Unable to start tethering - please try again"
I am rooted with Android 2.2, Build 3.26.651.6
Can anyone tell me what my problem could be?
Thanks

You're on 2.2? What device are you using?

i can verify that pre-11 is working on epic.

just tethered and was playing around on the forum. and at first it seemed slow but it was actually picking up some speed. pretty impressed for one of my first few times using it

HTC EVO 4g........
got it just little over month ago - I rooted it and all went good,
when first installed Wireless tether from Google - it worked great - next day- nothing ---- I was thinking - i was home when tried the first time - but i dont think it was using my Wireless in the house - cause i walked away from the Cell Booster and the speed droped to zero...
Then next day used it on the interstate with a good 4 cell bars -- and nothing ---

Hm I haven't run across that problem before. The folks in the Evo ROMs/Hacks sub-forum might be familiar with your problem if it's device-specific. I would check in there to see if they have any suggestions.

Anyone use Barnacle Wifi Tether successfully? I understand this does use infrastructure mode- but I didn't have enough time on Friday to get it to work- I was getting some form of error.

I'm assuming you downloaded Wireless Tether from the Market. If so, that version does not work on the Epic. Use this version instead.

However, Wireless Tether does not support infrastructure mode, meaning you can't Tether your iPod to your Epic, only desktop/laptop computers. If you want to be able to tether your iPod to your Epic as well, you need the MobileAP from i9000. Good luck!

I've tried installing the MobileAP from the i9000, but I get this error....

E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted

Everytime. So then I just reboot. Any ideas?

I'm using signed-mobileap.epic-SPH-D700USDI18.zip not signed-FINAL-mobileap.epic-SPH-D700USDI07.zip

Yes. Apparently I am not getting to the clockwork recovery, but just the standard android recovery. Apparently I need a different kernel.

Which one, where do it get it, how do I install it?

from a post by you earlier, "If you're referring to the Reboot into Recovery Mode option in the ROM Manager app, it will not work unless you have flashed a custom kernel that is ROM Manager friendly.

You need to use the manual method. While the phone is off, hold the vol down + camera + power buttons. "

But the manual method doesn't work for me either..... arrrrggghhh! this is frustrating....

How did you install ClockworkMod Recovery?

Well here is what I've done, or the steps I've taken since I purchased this device.

  • I rooted using z4root.
  • I installed Titanium backup and wireless tether pre-13 and know that I am rooted as those devices have super user privileges. Also I have the super user icon in my launcher.
  • I then installed Rom Manager from the app catalog.
  • I opened it and selected the Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, chose my device (Samsung Epic) and let it do its thing.

That is really all. I am trying to install the MobileAP and have the appropriate zip file on my device for it. However like I said I cannot get into the clockworkmod recovery, only the standard android recovery. From what I've read, I need to install a "recovery compatible kernel". I downloaded just now the redbend_ua with recovery kernel zip file from the http://forum.androidcentral.com/epic-4g-roms-hacks/34603-clockworkmod-recovery-instructions.html thread. Do I need the Android SDK yet? Should I install that kernel? What is my next step?

Thank you again for helping me out, I'm only 1 week into this, and really only a few days since I spent the first few days just playing with the stock device.

ROM Manager is useless unless you have a custom kernel installed. That means you can't boot into recovery and you can't install ClockworkMod Recovery using it.

Just follow the instructions in the thread you posted a link to. Once done you will have Clockwork installed, and you can install the I9000 MobileAP.

Ragnarokx- too many of us newbies are flooding in with the same issue it looks like.

Guys- you cannot oneclick or Z4root ONLY and do much with the phone. EVEN if all you want is stock Epic ROM but improved battery via Kernel tweaks- you need to hook up to a computer and get a little messy.

It's easy to ROOT nowdays- but Clockwork Mod Recovery (Despite it's confusing success message from Rom Manager) WILL NOT PROPERLY INSTALL from the Rom Manager app that you downloaded from Google Market UNLESS you have a new kernel already in place that you installed VIA the method Ragnarokx has a link to. If you THINK you installed Clockwork Mod Recovery via ROM MANAGER- you are WRONG despite any message the app tells you to the contrary.

It's very aggrevating for us newbies- but that's how it is.

I wish they'd update Rom Manager so you get a proper error message that would explain this...Better yet- it'd be great if they would create a way to just make Rom Manager install Clockwork Mod Recovery without a custom Kernel, but I guess that just can't be done.

I've UNrooted for just this reason- I still do not want to be entering codes into a PC to get my phone into a certain state. I don't want to have ODIN standing by incase the phone acts up. I want a few packages/apps to download and activate on the phone and it just works.

Until then, I'll be probably waiting for 2.2 official OTA and see if Clockwork Mod Recovery install gets any easier on Epic after THAT or I'll stay unrooted.
