Wireless Tethering for Root Users

I agree, the instructions were a bit confusing and I wasn't clear on the fact that I needed a special kernel in order to do the clockworkmod recovery.

I followed the directions to the T this time, and all is good. I even got the mobileAP from the i9000 installed. That is about all I needed root for. I don't plan on changing roms or kernels until after 2.2 is out....

That's good, because the I9000 MobileAP will only work on the stock ROM. So keep that in mind if you're ever thinking about flashing a new ROM.

It it just me or does the wireless tether seem to work a lot faster and smoother than the original sprint hotspot service on the phone?

Help with wireless tether

I rooted my phone and installed wireless tether. I started the app and gave it superused permission and it showed the download and upload speed at the.bottom. My problem is I.tried my wifes phone to see hoe it worked but I cant find it on wireless networks to connect to. I tried it manually and it said out of range. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

I think I might have found the problem. Android phones can't connect to ad hoc. I'll have to try it on my laptop and iPad when I get home. I saw some other threads on another forum of other people not being able to connect android phones to it. I was just trying to connect it to my wires hero to see how iit worked.

You have two options:

The MobileAP from I9000 works on a stock, rooted ROM and does work in infrastructure mode to connect to other mobile devices.

Wireless Tether actually can also connect to mobile devices, but it has to be enabled in the custom ROM that you're using. The only one I've come across like this is Baked Snack 1.6 - I was able to tether my iPod Touch with Wireless Tether.

Which version of wireless tether is the best to install? I've saw some say 11 is better than 9 but I saw 14 is out? Which seems to be the best for the epic? Thanks

Quick question, based on what I've read here...

I'm using the Syndicate ROM and the internet speeds I'm getting from the wifi tether app, bake into the ROM are terrible. I'm getting EvDO speeds and I want my 4G speeds. Is there something else I need to do to get the same speeds I was getting using the stock sprint ROM?

The only way to tether 4G right now is to use the Sprint hotspot app - all other apps support 3G only.

Thank you so much for your direct answer. Seen a lot of threads, but none answered the question directly that I'd found so far.

I know Sprint Hotspot for 4G tethering is $30 extra per month, but can you tether 3G for free without rooting?

If Wireless Tether gets erased after flashing you can always reinstall it. And yes, MobileAP from I9000 only seems to work with a stock ROM, whereas Wireless Tether works with virtually every ROM.

Just tried a few... only pre11 worked without a hitch.

Epic 4G.. Running Froyo.DK28, rooted with OneClick.. (in case that matters)

BTW Thanks Ragnarokx!! Couldn't have done it without you!!

So you are verifying Wireless Tether is working with 11??

I just rooted last week to get this, running 8. I would love to upgrade to new Froyo but do not want to risk loosing Wireless Tether - going on Christmas Road Trip with kids - an internet connection for entertainment will be a wonderful life saver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cannot risk that!! So just double checking.

When I first ran pre11 on DK28 and started tethering, a little "!" icon appeared in my notification bar. I went to it, checked a couple boxes and everything worked after that. If you don't get that icon you may have to go directly to settings and play around with the options.

I'm at the airport now running new froyo dk28 without clockwork n I tried every version inclduing 11 it tells me unable to change file when I press start it says unable to connect can someone help please

Hopefully someone else can chime in, but if you're running stock Froyo wireless tethering might be disabled. I never tried it on stock Froyo myself, only on custom Froyo ROMs, where it works fine.

Have you tried using Froyo's built in wired tethering? And you're rooted, correct?
