Worth rooting/installing custom ROM with Lollipop right around the corner?

I just got a used AT&T Note 3 with 4.4.2 on it, but if a whole bunch of changes are going to be made to the fundamental system (e.g. device encryption, possible new kernel), would I just have to undo all the work I just did to allow for the official 5.0 ROM (or a Lollipop-based custom ROM) to install?

It will still be a while before the Note 3 gets Lollipop. The US verstions Note 4/ S5 haven't been updated yet, at least not to my knowledge.
