Wow! Apple just dropped a bomb with iPhone OS 4.0

I don't need a custom rom to change my wallpaper or install custom made apps. That's the point.

Again the point is you can customize Android way more than the iPhone WITHOUT rooting. That's a fact and there is nothing hypocritical about mentioning it.

The point is you rooted and/or installed a custom rom. Why? Keep it as is. There is obviously a reason you did. So that is being hypocritical if you're doing the same thing iPhone users do, but for different reasons.

Apples and oranges. Blackberry and Nokia both outsell the iPhone, so by your logic Apple is playing catchup to them. High sales figures while an indication of success, doesn't necessarily mean it is better. That is a subjective matter.

I was stating that they weren't playing catchup to Android.

I should also mention satisfaction rating and the awards that JD has given Apple the past three years... oh wow, that's actually as long as the iPhone has been out for. So yeah, if you add up on the factors, I would say everyone else is playing catchup. When have you heard "This may be an Android Killer". Never!

Sales doesn't equate to better or catchup, but once again, customer experience / satisfaction ratings does!

Look at the industry average and where is Nokia & BlackBerry?

Although I like Android OS more, when will they catch up with:

  • Better copy & paste... or do I need a mod for that? :o

[uh I copy and paste just fine on Android. In fact under certain circumstances it's quicker than on the iPhone - just hit shift on the keyboard and drag a finger. No dialogue box to deal with when copying.

Please tell me how do copy text from the Gmail app? Or from my Yahoo account? Or from my MobileMe account that are all on my Nexus one?

  • Applications... Only app that I love using better on Android is Tapatalk.

[And that's your opinion. IMO the Google apps like Nav and skymap are superior to anything on the iphone. And the Android equivalents like barcode scanner, shazam, where etc all work perfectly fine. I miss nothing from my previous iphone 3g.]

I should have said 3rd party apps! Ones not made by Google.

  • Applications (again)... 9,300 apps in March. How many were actually apps? Oh, skins! Yay (sarcasm)

[Oh like the app store isn't full of complete crap. Give me a break!]

Oh yes, there may be, but they are at least APPS! Good or bad is very subjective... you should know that, you mentioned that above ;)

  • Mail... sloppy IMO. I won't even get into that.

[Mail on the iphone sucks period. Touchdown for Android is unmatched. And gmail on the iphone is a joke. Attachment handling on the iphone is a joke as well. ]

Like I stated above... I can't even copy & paste within the mail app. Why is there two mail apps? One for "gmail" and one for "others"! No push for Yahoo? I understand that is Google's competition, but if I have one (which I do), I don't get push? In fact, Google took a poop on all other mail that isn't Gmail IMO.

I really hope I don't hear a "but I don't use Yahoo" response as there are a lot, and I mean a lot of people that still use Yahoo. Most are because they've had the account for so long.

  • Camera (stock)...?

[The droid can take decent pics with a little patience but I agree, it can use some improvement.]

    w00t!

  • Fragmentation... Why don't all capable devices gs et the same updates at the same time the rest do?

[FUD. Not a real problem but a manufactured one by people who've run out of material.]

How is that manufactured or is it because there isn't a response to it? My sister just bought an Android device that was released (maybe a month ago) and she doesn't have 2.1 for it. She questioned why my phone had the speech to text capabilities for everything and hers didn't. Her friend who has a G1, isn't even getting the 2.1 update (I could be wrong, but I don't keep up). This is understandable (G1), but how does a current or recently released device not have the latest firmware?

You must not be browsing the Apple forums then. Go do a search for slowdown or slow or crash and see how many hits you get.

Hmmm... I had about 90 apps on my iPhone and never experienced slow downs. I had a little bit over 40 on my Nexus One and had to delete them a few days ago because my "memory" was too low and had to delete some. Yes, I am a member of everyone of the "top" iPhone forums and slowdowns isn't a popular topic bro. Not sure which ones you're going through to see that. Also, the point was that it was a lot more of those issues with Android (even with the snapdragon processor that I have).

I hardly if ever get slowdowns on my droid and I do not use an app killer. The N1 has even more memory on board, if you're having issues it's probably user error. Anyway, why do you own an N1 again?

"I hardly if ever get slowdowns", but maybe it's because of the rom you're using

Like I said, I've never had a slow down on my 3Gs. I get them on my Pre, BlackBerry devices and Nexus!

User error... awesome response. I think we both know user error isn't the case with me, but nice try. It was cute actually.

I beta test for a lot of apps and use all different platforms as I have a couple BlackBerry devices, 3Gs, Pre & Nexus. User error isn't an option. I'm sure my experience with phones is a little bit above average to be user error.

The point is you rooted and/or installed a custom rom. Why? Keep it as is. There is obviously a reason you did. So that is being hypocritical if you're doing the same thing iPhone users do, but for different reasons.

Ah, but the nature of the reason is what matters to Android power users and is the reason why I'll never own another Apple product.

I was stating that they weren't playing catchup to Android.

I should also mention satisfaction rating and the awards that JD has given Apple the past three years... oh wow, that's actually as long as the iPhone has been out for. LOL!! This is a totally subjective matter my friend. JD Power or any survey for that matter wouldn't change the mind of the happy corporate user who relies on his Blackberry for email, an area where Android and the iPhone both need some work. Personally I hate blackberries, but that's just my opinion. Same applies to any other user. For me, right now, Android is the best OS and I've had the opportunity to use them all. So JD Power can s**K it!

Although I like Android OS more,

Really? What do you like about it?

Please tell me how do copy text from the Gmail app? Or from my Yahoo account? Or from my MobileMe account that are all on my Nexus one?

Ah yes, this is where not having a hardware keyboard sucks. On my Droid, I simply slide open the keyboard, hold the shift key and drag my finger across the text to be copied, that's all. It gets copied to the clipboard at that point and I can then paste it wherever. Unless someone with a n1 can chime in (or there's a third party app to help), I don't know if this is possible with the software keyboard. So Android has the capability, it's just that HTC might have dropped the ball on that one. Notice I said 'might'. There could be a workaround for this.

I should have said 3rd party apps! Ones not made by Google.

It wouldn't make a difference really. The third party apps I've got installed on my Droid work beautifully. And I care more about function, not polish.

Where I'll admit the iPhone has the edge for now is in 3d games.

Oh yes, there may be, but they are at least APPS! Good or bad is very subjective... you should know that, you mentioned that above ;)

What difference does it make whether it's an app or a skin? If it useless to me, it's still useless.

I don't use Yahoo, lol. I could care less about that crappy email service. I get exchange and my Gmail both pushed reliably. So I'm very satisfied.

2.1 is more than just a firmware update, it's also an OS upgrade. And I can help answer your last question by asking why isn't the iPhone 3G going to get multitasking when iPhone OS 4.0 comes out? More than likely, it's the fact that her device is considered lower end (less processing power / memory) and so will not be released with 2.1 immediately (or never in some cases). If your sister wanted the latest and greatest she should have bought the latest and greatest. In any case quite a few of the newer devices are on their way to 2.x so like I said, all FUD. And if not having speech to text capability is cause for concern then that's even more reason to research before buying.

Hmmm... I had about 90 apps on my iPhone and never experienced slow downs. I had a little bit over 40 on my Nexus One and had to delete them a few days ago because my "memory" was too low and had to delete some.

I have 70 apps on my Droid and I still have 62.25 mb of storage space left. I also experience no slowdowns. The n1 has twice as much app storage memory as the Droid so its extremely difficult for me to believe 40 apps are causing you to run out of space. Of your claim is accurate, then most likely your phone has issues or you have a misbehaving app.

Yes, I am a member of everyone of the "top" iPhone forums and slowdowns isn't a popular topic bro. Not sure which ones you're going through to see that. Also, the point was that it was a lot more of those issues with Android (even with the snapdragon processor that I have).

This is where I got my info from, Apples own iPhone 3gs forum:

Search for 'sluggish' or 'slow performance'.

Apple - Support - Discussions - iPhone 3GS

"I hardly if ever get slowdowns", but maybe it's because of the rom you're using

Well the ROM is nice, I'll admit, but it's really only vanilla 2.1 with some added hacks like the youtube hq hack (nothing to do with performance). I had no issues with 2.01 either so it's definitely not the rom.

Considering what you wrote in this thread, I have my doubts.

Ah, but the nature of the reason is what matters to Android power users and is the reason why I'll never own another Apple product.

I think the point keeps eluding you or you're purposely avoiding it. You laughed about someone needing to jailbreak for things and yet you're using custom roms/rooting for other things (may not be the same as iPhone users). That is being hypocritical. I will not revisit this part of the debate. If you'd like to, be my guest.

LOL!! This is a totally subjective matter my friend. You missed the graph I posted? That's not subjective, it's a fact! More people are satisfied with their iPhone and by far -- above average. And how did this switch from Android vs. iPhone to BlackBerry vs. iPhone?

Really? What do you like about it?

  • Customizable beyond belief: I've already use 3 types of keyboards
  • Notifications: The iPhone really need to step up in this category. I've been told (already) that they like this phone as I respond quicker and I don't seem to respond more than a couple minutes later
  • Screen: As I mentioned before, it's a beauty and I love looking at it. I actually rather sacrifice battery life to get to see how awesome it is with the brightness up
  • Android Market: It's not on the iPhone's level, but every app I use on the iPhone seems to be there or one similar.
  • Widgets: Omg... I'm addicted to them now

Thanks for helping with my point... You have to slide your hardware keyboard out to do this. I question if you've used an iPhone extensively to see even then, it's easier on the iPhone. I can double tap a word, it will highlight that word and then I can use the start/end points to select as much text as I'd like.

For devices without physical keyboards, it is even harder to copy and paste on android.

It wouldn't make a difference really. The third party apps I've got installed on my Droid work beautifully. And I care more about function, not polish.

Where I'll admit the iPhone has the edge for now is in 3d games.

So you'd rather have function and not function & polish at the same time?

Twitter apps? Facebook? IM apps? Games? Those are the most in demand (and I'm going to take a guess that you either don't use them or they are good enough for you). None of the best of each of those is even near the iPhone. Feature (function) wise, quality and "polish" (as you call it).

What difference does it make whether it's an app or a skin? If it useless to me, it's still useless.

Why are you complaining about being subjective again

Fact: A skin isn't an app.
Fact: An app may be useless to me/you, but it may not be to the next person.

I'm tired of searching for "Apps" and having skins and things pop up that aren't APPS!

I don't use Yahoo, lol. I could care less about that crappy email service. I get exchange and my Gmail both pushed reliably. So I'm very satisfied, but you are right Duvi. I can't really argue too much about it. I realize other users don't have/use Gmail and may want a good experience when using email as they would when using a gmail account.

I'm going to "lol" as well. I also fixed your statement. I know you didn't want to admit it.

2.1 is more than just a firmware update, it's also an OS upgrade. And I can help answer your last question by asking why isn't the iPhone 3G going to get multitasking when iPhone OS 4.0 comes out? You may want to re-read. I stated that it was recently released; maybe a month ago! It doesn't mean she isn't getting 2.1 either, that is one of the main reasons why Android has this fragmentation issue. She has to wait for her legit 2.1 update. How would research go a long way when speech to text wasn't what she wanted/needed in a phone. She just saw it on my phone and wanted the same capabilities.

Are you even sure what you're talking about anymore? The 3G is getting the update, just not multitasking. Therefore the only thing being left out is what the hardware can't handle. This is different from hardware (her device) that can handle it, but hasn't received the update yet!

I have 70 apps on my Droid and I still have 62.25 mb of storage space left. I also experience no slowdowns. The n1 has twice as much app storage memory as the Droid so its extremely difficult for me to believe 40 apps are causing you to run out of space. No it's not my phone or apps misbehaving. I apps that used a lot of memory, Google Earth being one of them with over 20MB (forgot the exact number). This is also something else I will not visit. I've never had that issue on my iPhone as it currently has 1.41GB worth of apps. This is after deleting a lot of them.

This is where I got my info from, Apples own iPhone 3gs forum:

I really don't think you're reading what I say... Once again, and for the last time, I stated that there are MORE of these concerns with Android. The first bit of advice I got or anyone new gets on the Android platform seems to be to d/l "Advanced Task Killer". This isn't the first thing you see being stated in iPhone forums.

Well the ROM is nice, I'll admit, but it's really only vanilla 2.1 with some added hacks like the youtube hq hack (nothing to do with performance). I had no issues with 2.01 either so it's definitely not the rom.

It doesn't matter, it's not stock. I don't care how close to stock it is. The majority of end users aren't going to root/unroot and add customer roms to their device.

I would also like for you to stop fibbing online. Here is a quote from the droidforums. Maybe it's someone else with the same name :o

Considering what you've written, I have my doubts that you fully read what I wrote or that I can believe anything you say. Guess that's why you questioned the validity of my posts, you were guilty of not having any in yours.

I think the point keeps eluding you or you're purposely avoiding it. I didn't say someone needed to jailbreak for 'things'. I was very specific, stop trying to twist what I said to prove your pointless point.

Wow, you act like sliding out a keyboard is a big deal. I slide and drag my fingers across the text and that's it. No need to tap or adjust start and end points. Yes I've used the iPhone's copy and paste and I'm quicker on the Droid most of the time. I'm also not sure how I helped your point. My Droid can do exactly what you have trouble doing on your N1. Not my problem.

I agree with your last statement though. It is a little more difficult without a physical keyboard and hopefully the companies that choose to leave them out take note.

So you'd rather have function and not function & polish at the same time?

I said I prefer function over polish. Where did I say I wouldn't like both at the same time? If the apps works for me, great. If it isn't polished I'll still have no issues with it. If it is, great but meh....not a big deal.

Twitter apps? Facebook? IM apps? Games? Those are the most in demand (and I'm going to take a guess that you either don't use them or they are good enough for you). None of the best of each of those is even near the iPhone. Feature (function) wise, quality and "polish" (as you call it).

I use my Droid mostly for work and the games I have installed on it are good enough for the time I need a little entertainment. It's my music device and I use it for videos and web browsing. I don't twitter, use facebook or IM. Not my thing. And what makes you think those are the most in demand? Yeah some people actually use their phone for other things besides chatting and farting around all day on facebook. That's about the least productive thing one can do with their smartphones IMO. Also if these social apps were important to me, I'd have probably gotten a Devour or Eris.

And you made my point with this comment:

Android Market: It's not on the iPhone's level, but every app I use on the iPhone seems to be there or one similar.

Why are you complaining about being subjective again

And when I had my iPhone I was tired of searching for "useful Apps' and having other useless apps come up. I still fail to see your point. And a skin may be useless to you but not to someone else.

If you are arguing that the Market can be better organized, I'm with you, but don't tell me one has more useful stuff than the other.

I realize other users don't have/use Gmail and may want a good experience when using email as they would when using a gmail account.

There are many people with other email accounts besides Gmail that have no issues. I've set up several pop accounts on other Droids and the users have had no complaints as of yet.

You may want to re-read. I stated that it was recently released; maybe a month ago! How would research go a long way when speech to text wasn't what she wanted/needed in a phone. She just saw it on my phone and wanted the same capabilities.

Well she needs to be a little patient then and get a little more educated about Android and the various versions while she's at it. And a little research would have yielded the point that 2.1 is the latest OS and thus the most capable.

Are you even sure what you're talking about anymore? The 3G is getting the update, just not multitasking. Therefore the only thing being left out is what the hardware can't handle. This is different from hardware (her device) that can handle it, but hasn't received the update yet!

First you never said what device she has. Secondly if she wanted 2.1 she should have bought a device with 2.1 simple. No one to blame here.

I have Google earth as well. You know there are people with well over 100 apps and no issues right? Seems to me you're just making stuff up and excuses as you go along. Why don't you list the apps that are supposedly gobbling so much memory on your phone?

I really don't think you're reading what I say... Once again, and for the last time, I stated that there are MORE of these concerns with Android. The first bit of advice I got or anyone new gets on the Android platform seems to be to d/l "Advanced Task Killer". This isn't the first thing you see being stated in iPhone forums.

Please quit backpedaling. You were saying that you hardly see this on the iPhone forums and I provided you with a link with tons of complaints, that's all.

Yes some of the 'weaker' Android phones like the Eris and Hero do get laggy as more apps are run on them. But that's a direct result of their limited memory/ processing power. Similar to the iPhone 3g. I had one and it would get very laggy as the day progressed and I switched back and forth between browsing, email etc.

The higher end Android phones however hardly suffer from this and many of of the people running task killers are doing it mostly out of hearsay and ignorance. Considering how many apps I run at one a day, if lag was a normal occurrence, I'd have it daily.

It doesn't matter, it's not stock. I don't care how close to stock it is. The majority of end users aren't going to root/unroot and add customer roms to their device.

Please, you have no idea what you're talking about. I was running 2.01 with more apps just fine.

I would also like for you to stop fibbing online. Here is a quote from the droidforums. Maybe it's someone else with the same name :o

Nice try, but just more proof you have no idea what you're talking about. The BB rom DOES NOT OVERCLOCK so I was not fibbing. It's basically vanilla 2.1 with just hacks added.

Adamz kernel is what allows one to overclock using set cpu and I never said anywhere I wasn't overclocked. And I'll repeat, with 2.01 I had no slowdowns. That doesn't mean I wouldn't want even more performance out of my phone.

Considering what you've written, I have my doubts that you fully read what I wrote or that I can believe anything you say. Guess that's why you questioned the validity of my posts, you were guilty of not having any in yours.

I question the validity of your posts because you keep backpedaling and making assumptions about things you have no idea about.

So, please change "for things" into "to change your wallpaper". Even though I changed the word, it's not going to change that fact that you're a hypocrit.

Just in case you don't have a dictionary near you, here is the definition of the word "thing" in which you can see it is pretty much the same sentence as 'changing your wallpaper' is a 'thing'.

Thing | Define Thing at Dictionary.com

I am pretty much done responding. Maybe you're not lying on purpose and just maybe you're not changing things around purposely, but either way, it is becoming a waste of my time.

You installed a rom, but it wasn't for performance  Okay, I would ask what your reasoning was, but I really don't care nor do I want to continue with someone who lies (whether it's intentional or not).

Enjoy being ignored & good day to you!

Adamz kernel is what allows one to overclock using set cpu and I never said anywhere I wasn't overclocked. And I'll repeat, with 2.01 I had no slowdowns. That doesn't mean I wouldn't want even more performance out of my phone.

OK, byebye. Enjoy the 4th Generation IPhone on the nations worst and slowest (on average) network.

Here's a lovely link to back it up from a reliable source:

Show me an iphone that can get that kind of 3G speed... it can't even run the same test cause it doesn't have flash.

LOL, whatever! I installed BB mainly for 2.1 as I was becoming impatient and the added hacks like youtube hq was nice. However being able to use other kernels to overclock was too much to ignore and why not? But none of that takes away from what I said and I've noticed you completely ignored the request to list the 'memory gobbling' apps that's 'slowing' you down.

And ignoring me isn't going to make your arguments any more valid. Good day to you as well.

Not even sure why you directed this towards me as if I only have one carrier or that I'm even loyal to AT&T, especially when this discussion was about phone and it's operating system. Was it something you needed to get off your chest? It seems that way, especially since it's an article from July 2009.

If you want, you can use this article (from this year) ;):
AT&T Roars Back in PCWorld’s Second 3G Wireless Performance Test - PCWorld

Why does it always have to be a battle? If Verizon works for you, then stick with them. For me, AT&T and Sprint actually work the best for me.

In all seriousness, I'm really puzzled (no joke) at why you came at me with carrier nonsense in a thread in which OS was being discussed.

I apologize if the guy who's being ignored is your friend or if I said something about Android you didn't like.

Once again, unlike the fanboys (I won't even say "you"), I'll go with whatever is working for me. Simple. I have multiple carriers and the four main OS (BlackBerry, iPhone, WebOS & Android) and so unlike most (not saying "you";)), instead of using these tests done by these articles, I can actually test them out myself.

With the following statement, you must be one of those believers that the 4th gen is coming to Verizon (and if you didn't get it... that means, for me, that would be the only way I'll experience the nations "slowest" (on average) network):

OK, byebye. Enjoy the 4th Generation IPhone on the nations worst and slowest (on average) network.

I bet when we're both on 3G using our phone for voice, AT&T's network at its slowest speed will be faster than Verizon's :o

Verizon & Android is the best for all and everyone who disagrees suck! Am I cool and can we be friends now?

Actually, I have Sprint. My point is whats the use of a phone if your service sucks. Where I'm at there is almost no ATT service (In a large college town). In Florida there is no way you can get 3G service on ATT throughout the state, but I travel throughout the entire state with 3G everywhere. I also had too many dropped calls on ATT to keep them. T-Mo isn't that much better here.
Its a fact that ATT spreads out their towers too far apart to be useful. They are spreading out their 2100Mhz towers the same distance they are spreading their 850Mhz towers. Verizon and Sprint both properly spread their 2000Mhz towers to cover an entire city. If the iPhone were on a CDMA network, then maybe they would be a good phone. Otherwise, its just crippled device on a shoddy network.
From December:
AT&T ranks last in Consumer Reports’ satisfaction survey
Its more of a hype thing with the iPhone than it is a functional thing.

OS 4 isn't accurate at all. In fact, I just installed the 4.0 OS beta on my 3G just now. It works fine. Steve mentioned that the multitasking won't work on the 3G. That's the only feature that will be limited and won't work on pre-3GS devices and I don't blame them one bit. Even running the iPod in the background while trying to do something else is painfully slow on the 3G, so I believe them when they say the hardware just isn't there on the 1st generation and 3G iPhones.

Well in this pissing contest, I think what we've over-looked here is that OS 4.0 "multitasking" is by no means multitasking.

Multitasking is doing multiple things at once, this just puts them on pause and un-pauses them when you come back.

Android can hop on one foot whilst rubbing its green belly! While the Apple has to put his jumping on pause to rub his belly, and vice versa.

Tsk tsk.

"New from apple! A totally new way to do things! Run many programs.............at different times!"

Tsk tsk.... Another iPhone / Apple hater who does not understand the iPhone OS and (IMHO) how it's "multitasking" is better than what we have one the Android OS. For 99% of users Apple's version of "multitasking" will be more than enough and will offer much better battery life than true multitasking.

I have both an iPhone 3GS and a Nexus One, and they both have their good and bad points. I really laugh when someone (like you) from one side or the other can't see past their own "fanboy-ism" to see the benefits of both OS's.

PSST, iphone battery life sucks.

^^exactly. The iPhone has worse battery life than the Droid on average. Apple won't implement true multitasking because it'll more than likely result in even more lockups, slowdowns and crashes and they'll probably have to revamp the entire OS.

PSST.... Not mine. My 3GS battery last almost 2 days. Much longer than my Nexus One. :p

On standby maybe. My co-worker's 3gs barely makes it through the work day. My old 3g never made through the day. I guess it depends on what's being done with them but my Droid puts them both to shame. Besides, the battery has always been a complaint on the 3gs from day 1.

Wrong, daily use... Making calls, surfing, checking email and using Gowalla at every stop. I've never had any issues with battery life on my 3GS. I do admit though the battery life was not great on my 3G. And in case you missed it, while your droid might have great battery life, I own a Nexus One and it's battery life (while decent) is not as good as my 3GS.

Go troll somewhere else, or get banned trying here.

Obviously you don't have the first idea what the new 4.0 OS does, I do since I've gotten my mitts on the SDK.

So before you think you're going to be "so so cool" by calling me out on the forums; THINK, then act.

In all seriousness guys. I want you to have fun, I like that you have opinions and voice them. Yet I ask that you do so in a civilized manner. There is no need for this "pissing match".
