I don't need a custom rom to change my wallpaper or install custom made apps. That's the point.

Again the point is you can customize Android way more than the iPhone WITHOUT rooting. That's a fact and there is nothing hypocritical about mentioning it.

The point is you rooted and/or installed a custom rom. Why? Keep it as is. There is obviously a reason you did. So that is being hypocritical if you're doing the same thing iPhone users do, but for different reasons.

Apples and oranges. Blackberry and Nokia both outsell the iPhone, so by your logic Apple is playing catchup to them. High sales figures while an indication of success, doesn't necessarily mean it is better. That is a subjective matter.

Look at the industry average and where is Nokia & BlackBerry?

Although I like Android OS more, when will they catch up with:

How is that manufactured or is it because there isn't a response to it? My sister just bought an Android device that was released (maybe a month ago) and she doesn't have 2.1 for it. She questioned why my phone had the speech to text capabilities for everything and hers didn't. Her friend who has a G1, isn't even getting the 2.1 update (I could be wrong, but I don't keep up). This is understandable (G1), but how does a current or recently released device not have the latest firmware?

You must not be browsing the Apple forums then. Go do a search for slowdown or slow or crash and see how many hits you get.

Hmmm... I had about 90 apps on my iPhone and never experienced slow downs. I had a little bit over 40 on my Nexus One and had to delete them a few days ago because my "memory" was too low and had to delete some. Yes, I am a member of everyone of the "top" iPhone forums and slowdowns isn't a popular topic bro. Not sure which ones you're going through to see that. Also, the point was that it was a lot more of those issues with Android (even with the snapdragon processor that I have).

I hardly if ever get slowdowns on my droid and I do not use an app killer. The N1 has even more memory on board, if you're having issues it's probably user error. Anyway, why do you own an N1 again?

Like I said, I've never had a slow down on my 3Gs. I get them on my Pre, BlackBerry devices and Nexus!

I beta test for a lot of apps and use all different platforms as I have a couple BlackBerry devices, 3Gs, Pre & Nexus. User error isn't an option. I'm sure my experience with phones is a little bit above average to be user error.

LOL!! This is a totally subjective matter my friend. JD Power or any survey for that matter wouldn't change the mind of the happy corporate user who relies on his Blackberry for email, an area where Android and the iPhone both need some work. Personally I hate blackberries, but that's just my opinion. Same applies to any other user. For me, right now, Android is the best OS and I've had the opportunity to use them all. So JD Power can s**K it!

Ah yes, this is where not having a hardware keyboard sucks. On my Droid, I simply slide open the keyboard, hold the shift key and drag my finger across the text to be copied, that's all. It gets copied to the clipboard at that point and I can then paste it wherever. Unless someone with a n1 can chime in (or there's a third party app to help), I don't know if this is possible with the software keyboard. So Android has the capability, it's just that HTC might have dropped the ball on that one. Notice I said 'might'. There could be a workaround for this.

2.1 is more than just a firmware update, it's also an OS upgrade. And I can help answer your last question by asking why isn't the iPhone 3G going to get multitasking when iPhone OS 4.0 comes out? More than likely, it's the fact that her device is considered lower end (less processing power / memory) and so will not be released with 2.1 immediately (or never in some cases). If your sister wanted the latest and greatest she should have bought the latest and greatest. In any case quite a few of the newer devices are on their way to 2.x so like I said, all FUD. And if not having speech to text capability is cause for concern then that's even more reason to research before buying.

I have 70 apps on my Droid and I still have 62.25 mb of storage space left. I also experience no slowdowns. The n1 has twice as much app storage memory as the Droid so its extremely difficult for me to believe 40 apps are causing you to run out of space. Of your claim is accurate, then most likely your phone has issues or you have a misbehaving app.

Well the ROM is nice, I'll admit, but it's really only vanilla 2.1 with some added hacks like the youtube hq hack (nothing to do with performance). I had no issues with 2.01 either so it's definitely not the rom.

You missed the graph I posted? That's not subjective, it's a fact! More people are satisfied with their iPhone and by far -- above average. And how did this switch from Android vs. iPhone to BlackBerry vs. iPhone?

• Google Voice intergration: The option to dial out with Voice is sweet or even prompt to which one you'd like to dial out is awesome
• Customizable beyond belief: I've already use 3 types of keyboards
• Notifications: The iPhone really need to step up in this category. I've been told (already) that they like this phone as I respond quicker and I don't seem to respond more than a couple minutes later
• Screen: As I mentioned before, it's a beauty and I love looking at it. I actually rather sacrifice battery life to get to see how awesome it is with the brightness up
• Android Market: It's not on the iPhone's level, but every app I use on the iPhone seems to be there or one similar.
• Widgets: Omg... I'm addicted to them now

Thanks for helping with my point... You have to slide your hardware keyboard out to do this. I question if you've used an iPhone extensively to see even then, it's easier on the iPhone. I can double tap a word, it will highlight that word and then I can use the start/end points to select as much text as I'd like.

For devices without physical keyboards, it is even harder to copy and paste on android.

No it's not my phone or apps misbehaving. I apps that used a lot of memory, Google Earth being one of them with over 20MB (forgot the exact number). This is also something else I will not visit. I've never had that issue on my iPhone as it currently has 1.41GB worth of apps. This is after deleting a lot of them.

Wow, you act like sliding out a keyboard is a big deal. I slide and drag my fingers across the text and that's it. No need to tap or adjust start and end points. Yes I've used the iPhone's copy and paste and I'm quicker on the Droid most of the time. I'm also not sure how I helped your point. My Droid can do exactly what you have trouble doing on your N1. Not my problem.

I agree with your last statement though. It is a little more difficult without a physical keyboard and hopefully the companies that choose to leave them out take note.

I use my Droid mostly for work and the games I have installed on it are good enough for the time I need a little entertainment. It's my music device and I use it for videos and web browsing. I don't twitter, use facebook or IM. Not my thing. And what makes you think those are the most in demand? Yeah some people actually use their phone for other things besides chatting and farting around all day on facebook. That's about the least productive thing one can do with their smartphones IMO. Also if these social apps were important to me, I'd have probably gotten a Devour or Eris.

Yes some of the 'weaker' Android phones like the Eris and Hero do get laggy as more apps are run on them. But that's a direct result of their limited memory/ processing power. Similar to the iPhone 3g. I had one and it would get very laggy as the day progressed and I switched back and forth between browsing, email etc.

The higher end Android phones however hardly suffer from this and many of of the people running task killers are doing it mostly out of hearsay and ignorance. Considering how many apps I run at one a day, if lag was a normal occurrence, I'd have it daily.

Nice try, but just more proof you have no idea what you're talking about. The BB rom DOES NOT OVERCLOCK so I was not fibbing. It's basically vanilla 2.1 with just hacks added.

Adamz kernel is what allows one to overclock using set cpu and I never said anywhere I wasn't overclocked. And I'll repeat, with 2.01 I had no slowdowns. That doesn't mean I wouldn't want even more performance out of my phone.

Yes some of the 'weaker' Android phones like the Eris and Hero do get laggy as more apps are run on them. But that's a direct result of their limited memory/ processing power. Similar to the iPhone 3g. I had one and it would get very laggy as the day progressed and I switched back and forth between browsing, email etc.

The higher end Android phones however hardly suffer from this and many of of the people running task killers are doing it mostly out of hearsay and ignorance. Considering how many apps I run at one a day, if lag was a normal occurrence, I'd have it daily.

Nice try, but just more proof you have no idea what you're talking about. The BB rom DOES NOT OVERCLOCK so I was not fibbing. It's basically vanilla 2.1 with just hacks added.

Adamz kernel is what allows one to overclock using set cpu and I never said anywhere I wasn't overclocked. And I'll repeat, with 2.01 I had no slowdowns. That doesn't mean I wouldn't want even more performance out of my phone.

LOL, whatever! I installed BB mainly for 2.1 as I was becoming impatient and the added hacks like youtube hq was nice. However being able to use other kernels to overclock was too much to ignore and why not? But none of that takes away from what I said and I've noticed you completely ignored the request to list the 'memory gobbling' apps that's 'slowing' you down.

Not even sure why you directed this towards me as if I only have one carrier or that I'm even loyal to AT&T, especially when this discussion was about phone and it's operating system. Was it something you needed to get off your chest? It seems that way, especially since it's an article from July 2009.

Why does it always have to be a battle? If Verizon works for you, then stick with them. For me, AT&T and Sprint actually work the best for me.

I have multiple carriers and the four main OS (BlackBerry, iPhone, WebOS & Android) and so unlike most (not saying "you"), instead of using these tests done by these articles, I can actually test them out myself.

With the following statement, you must be one of those believers that the 4th gen is coming to Verizon (and if you didn't get it... that means, for me, that would be the only way I'll experience the nations "slowest" (on average) network):

Actually, I have Sprint. My point is whats the use of a phone if your service sucks. Where I'm at there is almost no ATT service (In a large college town). In Florida there is no way you can get 3G service on ATT throughout the state, but I travel throughout the entire state with 3G everywhere. I also had too many dropped calls on ATT to keep them. T-Mo isn't that much better here.
Its a fact that ATT spreads out their towers too far apart to be useful. They are spreading out their 2100Mhz towers the same distance they are spreading their 850Mhz towers. Verizon and Sprint both properly spread their 2000Mhz towers to cover an entire city. If the iPhone were on a CDMA network, then maybe they would be a good phone. Otherwise, its just crippled device on a shoddy network.

OS 4 isn't accurate at all. In fact, I just installed the 4.0 OS beta on my 3G just now. It works fine. Steve mentioned that the multitasking won't work on the 3G. That's the only feature that will be limited and won't work on pre-3GS devices and I don't blame them one bit. Even running the iPod in the background while trying to do something else is painfully slow on the 3G, so I believe them when they say the hardware just isn't there on the 1st generation and 3G iPhones.

^^exactly. The iPhone has worse battery life than the Droid on average. Apple won't implement true multitasking because it'll more than likely result in even more lockups, slowdowns and crashes and they'll probably have to revamp the entire OS.

On standby maybe. My co-worker's 3gs barely makes it through the work day. My old 3g never made through the day. I guess it depends on what's being done with them but my Droid puts them both to shame. Besides, the battery has always been a complaint on the 3gs from day 1.

Wrong, daily use... Making calls, surfing, checking email and using Gowalla at every stop. I've never had any issues with battery life on my 3GS. I do admit though the battery life was not great on my 3G. And in case you missed it, while your droid might have great battery life, I own a Nexus One and it's battery life (while decent) is not as good as my 3GS.
