Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?

I was specifically referring to apps, which unless you jailbreak, are only available from, and at the whim, of Apple. I do realize that you can put your own content into iTunes and synch to your device, but that still puts Apple in the middle IMHO. Sorry for the confusion.

As with most things, this competition comes down to money.

Amazon's new device is great, but in the end it exists solely to weld you into their ecosystem and their content, thus they have a customized version of ICS to prevent access to anybody but them. Don't get me wrong, love Amazon and am highly invested in content from them, just don't want to be utterly dependent on them to decide what I can and cannot do with my purchase. And lack of GPS is a killer for me. Yes, they lost money on each machine (likely) but force you to guarantee that they'll make it back by binding you inexorably to them for everything that makes the device useful. Of course, unlike Google, Amazon HAS to make money on their content, it's their main business model. Google doesn't, their revenue comes in largely through ad and marketing service. Apple of course sticks it to you both ways, overprices their hardware (though it is VERY good) and requires you to get whatever is on it from them.

Do any of you think there'd even be a Kindle Fire HD or a soon-to-be-announced iPad mini if wasn't for the jab in the ribs from the Nexus 7?

The battle really isn't in hardware specs. It's with the ecosystems. Amazon wants you locked in theirs. So does Google. So does Apple. So does Microsoft.

There would be a Kindle Fire HD 7/8.9 regardless of the Nexus 7, simply because they are iterations on the first Kindle Fire.

No you can't. You cannot stream movies on a Nexus 7 from Amazon Prime.

Sure you can. I use Boat browser and I watch DS9 all the time using my Prime account.

I order a lot of stuff from Amazon so I joined prime more or less for the free two day shipping. The streaming video was a nice plus.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here is how huge the Fire HD is compared to the nexus. With its huge and dorky looking bezel, the fire is almost an inch wider than the nexus. I wear a suit or sport jacket every day and the nexus slips nicely into my inner jacket pocket. The fire won't do that, requiring me to carry it in my hand. The portability of the nexus is why its totally replaced my iPad. The width of the fire is a deal killer for me (and the renderings I've seen of the mini iPad make it appear to have the same problem.). I'll keep my sleek and powerful nexus, thank you.

The original Fire fit into my sport coat or suit pocket

I finally went for the Nexus 7 due to being stock Jelly Bean. I played with a friends old style Kindle Fire last night and the OS was just downright awful. Its not that it was just slow, but was just plain ugly and clunky. Not a single regret with my purchase here!

people should stupid to buy a fire when nexus 7 can do more and all that fire can do.
even amazon prime video. I use amzon prime on my ps3 and i am not a big fan of it

I bought it at launch because of the price & within a few months CM9 w/ ICS was ready for it so I immediately put it on & it's night & day.
That said, I'll be replacing it soon with an N7 & just keeping the Fire 1 as my bedside clock. I'll likely get the 299$ Fire 8.9 but only if the bootloader is unlockable & CM10 runs on it, we'll see.

Its a slower tablet which is what turned me off. You are downgrading if you have the nexus 7 tablet. Quad core versus dual core.

HDMI out is nice, but does the kindle fire support USB otg?

So the ads can be removed for $15. Not sure why anyone would want to but it's possible. While most are just Amazon Local/Living Social deals there are quite a few that are unique to Amazon. I've bought at least a dozen books at reduced prices this way and a couple of mp3 albums. I imagine the ads will start including video and magazine stuff now too.

I sold my Kindle Fire for a Nexus 7. It has a lot of features the original Fire didn't have. Because it has a microphone and camera I can place conference calls. I got a Google Voice cell phone number and can make calls all over for free. I love the voice commands which I use for searching and dictating email. The New Fire HD is interesting but I would only consider the 8.9 inch display model if I were to switch. The Fire OS is limited by design. I prefer the Jelly Bean OS.

I think that the Nexus is more compelling with the faster Tegra 3 processor, similar screen and stock Jelly Bean. Also, you can get a lot of Amazon content on the Nexus 7 already. Just my opinion, tell me what you think.

In conclusion:

The $199 fire hd 16gb is the real comparison to the $249 nexus 7.

The resolution is the same 1280x800 (8.9 has the higher res)
Nexus 7 has newest os and will be updated frequently
Fire hd is heavily modified (skinned) and will most likely not update from ics like the last fire (not many updates)
Nexus 7 has play store (way more apps, including amazon apps)
Fire hd has amazon app store (way more movies, books)
Nexus 7 has quad core tegra 3 (cpu blows omap out of the water which means multitasking is better as well)
Fire hd has dual core with added gpu performance (not as fast as 8.9)
Nexus 7 has nfc (personally I think this will be huge in the future)
Fire hd has hdmi out

Not sure how data versions are gonna work. But if fire hd is going with the 150 or 250mb per month, and on att who has a very small lte network so far, seems like a bad deal. Nexus 3g is supposedly coming out so well have to compare when that comes.

For $50 more... It's seems like the nexus should really only have the 8.9 to compete against and they're not in the same competition pool in terms of size and price. Regardless I'm glad amazon stepped it up and came out with an impressive line.

I think they are aimed at very different markets. The "Fires" are mainly media consumption devices whereas the Nexus is more of a general purpose device. The Nexus has features like GPS and NFC that the "Fires" lack as they have no need for them as entertainment devices.
