So I used voodoo ota root keeper to temporarily unroot my phone to take the 4.1.2 update. I went to restore it and the app doesn't restore the root. how do I go about getting my root back. should I factory reset, flash back to stock or can someone offer a different solution? i'd really rather not have to restore everything. Let me know, thanks.

Well, you can try any of these:
Call Logs Backup & Restore: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.CallLogBackupRestore
Carbon: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup
MyBackup Pro: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro
SMS Backup & Restore: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore
(there are free/trial versions of all of them) to help make it easier to restore your current setup.

Without knowing what went wrong on your OTA, it's hard to suggest an easy fix. I seriously doubt that a Factory Reset will fix whatever your problem is, but after backing up everything that you care about, it certainly wouldn't hurt to try - even if it doesn't fix the problem, it'll only be an extra 10 minutes or so.

My vote would be to use Odin on your PC to blast the 4.1.2 stock rooted ROM onto the phone and use that as the starting point for the rest of your efforts.
(PS. If you had an alternate recovery loaded, I'm surprised that the OTA didn't choke when it tried to load.)

I ended up flashing back to stock and just re-doing the root process and backed up all that I could. Everything is back to normal now.
